12/24/07 This Day in Washington Baseball History...

The Continuing Attempt To Educate A Montreal Fan About DC Baseball History...

From the book "Speaking of Baseball", edited by David Plaut...

From the section, "Baseball Geography: The American League"...

On the Washington Senators...

"For the Washington Senators, the worst time of year is the baseball season."

                                              -Roger Kahn(b.1927),
                                                Sportswriter.

"There is a federal law that forbids them to win."

                                              -John Steinbeck(1902-1968),
                                               Author

"Watching the Washington Senators, you forget the beauty of baseball. You forget the bare-handed grab, the elegant stretch at first, the choreography of a six-four-three double play. Watching the Washington Senators is like watching the human condition without the slapstick. It is an excercise in humility."

                                               -Jane Leavy
                                               "Squeeze Play", (1990)

"The Senators might have been one of baseball's most god-awful teams, a threadbare and lackluster group of has-beens, never-wases, and names that were not even household names in their own households."

                                               -Bert Randolph Sugar
                                                "Baseballistics" (1990)

"We cheer for the Senators, we pray for the Senators, and we hope that the Supreme Court doesn't declare them unconstitutional."

                                               -Lyndon B. Johnson (1908-73)
36th President of the United States

This day
I get it, this is a tax write-off.  Are you based in this city without a state?  A man without a country?  Sort of a baseball Don Quixote?

Merry Christmas to all.
