Dmitri Young

is he available?

Star-divide

I'm a Twins blogger at www.SethSpeaks.net. I have been saying for a month or more that the guy the Twins need to acquire is Dmitri Young. He would be a solid veteran DH. The Nats signed him for cheap. I've read that there are concerns about him personally, likely based on last year. Are those concerns still justified? And finally, what would it take for the Twins to acquire him? You can name names or just speak in general terms.
Thank you!

Hi Seth
According to reports, Young is certainly available. If the Soriano experience is any guide, the Nats will ask for a lot for him and then happily default to a compensation pick if Young walks at the end of the season. That scenario's sort of dicey, because Young might just decide to accept arbitration or, even before we get to that point, Young might not even qualify for Type B compensation. There's also talk of re-upping Young in the event Nick Johnson can't be relied upon to come back full-strength.

I'm not too familiar with the Twins' system except I know Matt Moses is from my home city (Richmond) and the Twins have all kinds of pitching at Rochester. I'm assuming Young can't bring someone like Slowey in return.

thank you!
I personally think Slowey would be too much, but I would be fine with two of the Twins secondary pitching prospects.

Matt Moses and David Winfree are both from Richmond (I think) and both in the Twins system.

Not to shamelessly self-promote, but I did my top 50 twins prospects awhile back (http://www.sethspeaks.net/Top50Prospectsmid07.htm). I would be fine giving up maybe one pitcher from 10-20 and one from 20-30 or something. In my mind it's a win-win. the Nats got their money's worth in Young and would get two quality pitching prospects from a system full of quality pitching prospects. The Twins would fill their DH role for 2 months. I think a package of Jay Rainville and Jose Mijares is about as much as I'd give up for him... especially considering the Twins playoff hopes are very, very low right now, and knowing how they value pitching prospects.
