Garett Mock?

I'm new to FB. I thought I'd see if any nats fans know or have heard anything about if Mock will get a good shot at a starting spot or if they plan to keep him in relief? What do you think of Collin Balester so far? Also, does Tyler Clippard have any chances left? He really hasn't pitched bad in the big leagues when he has been given a shot. I suppose any expert rundowns of the Nats starting siruation would be interesting to hear. Jordan Zimmermann in 2009 possibly as well?

hey casejud, welcome.

all of your questions are good ones. Balestar did enough last year to be a virtual lock for the Nats starting rotation next year. right now, there are very few locks. let’s take a look.

Lannan and Balestar are certainties. Lannan went 9-15 with a 3.91 and showed he really can pitch. with a little offensive support, he’s a legit #2-3 on a good team. Balestar’s overall numbers don’t show it (3-7, 5.51), but his K/BB rate was decent for a rookie, and he was feast or famine, either looking really good or really terrible. a horrendous spring is the only thing keeping him out of the rotation.

as for the rest? well, they’ll probably make an offer to Redding to avid arbitration. he gave them 180 innings of dependability. Odalis Perez is a free agent and pitched well enough (4.34 ERA) that he may have priced himself out of DC. so if they bring Redding back and Perez goes, that leaves two spots.

the realistic in-house candidate include: Shairon Martis, who was pushed around a little bit but showed good “stuff” in five September appearances; Garrett Mock, who honestly is better suited for the pen with his stuff and make-up, Jason Bergmann, who the team basically banished to the bullpen despite good peripheral numbers, and Jordan Zimmerman, who GM Jim Bowden announced was a candidate, but realistically is not ready.

i don’t think Clippard is on the big club’s radar anymore.

i don’t see the Nats starting the season with two of those four in the rotation. the guess here is that one of the four come north out of spring training, most likely Martis, and they go out and sign someone very comparable to Redding—someone who’ll give them 180 decent innings and allow Zimmermann and Detwiler and others some more seasoning. maybe a Kip Wells or Josh Fogg type.

Mock and Bergmann will join Hanrahan, Hinckley, Rivera, Shell, Colome and another lefty (FA possible) in the bullpen.

Mock...

Everything I read last season, when Mock came back to pitch out of the pen, seemed to be saying that Mock starting again wasn’t an impossibility, but they were gonna see what he could do in relief…and since he looked like a good fit in the bullpen late in the season, i’d bet he starts there in ’09…

I’d be REALLY surprised if Bergmann was in the starting rotation next season, I think he could be a key arm out of the bullpen however, if he can concentrate and trust his stuff for 2-3 innings at a time…I haven’t read anything positive about Clippard since he was acquired, and I think he disappointed some and saw his stock drop…

I agree with Dave, Balester and Lannan would have to lose their spots in Spring Training with some sort of spectacular failure to reverse the positive impressions both of them made this past season, I expect both to be in the rotation…and I think bringing Redding back to teach by example is a good idea, but I’d pass on Odalis Perez and find another starter in the FA market or in a trade…“a Kip Wells/Fogg” type like Dave suggested is right on, just hopefully not either of those two…I think the Nationals want Martis to start in the rotation so he’d have to really take a step back to not get a shot…

I see Zimmermann and Detwiler starting at Double or Triple-A and getting the same sort of look Balester and Martis did this year…

And I can’t wait for a full season of Hinckley out of the pen, “Wild” Joel Hanrahan making every save interesting and Colome, Rivera and Shell getting completely overused…

Thanks for starting a good discussion with your first post, for that you get frontpaged…
