If ESPN's Peter Gammons and Buster Olney Are Sharing A Byline, This Must Be A Scoop, "Source: BoSox Close To Getting Teixeira"...
ESPN.com's baseball reporters Peter Gammons and Buster Olney have collaborated on an article at ESPN.com entitled, "Sources: BoSox close to getting Teixeira", where the two respected journalists report that the negotiations between the Red Sox and free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira have progressed:
"...to the point that team executives may have face-to-face negotiations with Teixeira's representative, Scott Boras, in the forthcoming hours."
The article went up at 7:17 pm EST. Don't explode in anger just yet, but keep a close eye on the news...oh, and the price for the Red Sox to get Tex? Gammons and Olney quote a "rival executive" who says $22 M per...

Tomorrow morning?...I'm just starting today's post...
…found that John Henry quote half an hour back and can’t figure out what’s up…especially with SI.com’s Jon Heyman saying the Red Sox offer was 8-years/$180 million :
“…the Nats may be as high, or even higher than that. Some suggest they have either hit the $200 million mark, or gotten very close. Or that someone else has…”
Someone else? Henry says they’re out and the Nats have the highest offer according to SI.com…I love baseless speculation…with all these anonymous sources I now believe I can prove ANYTHING is true!!!

LOL!
I knew you would be burning the midnight oil! On my way to work tonight I was hearing the same monstrous numbers on XM’s “Homeplate” (Ch. 175). I almost launched my “hoopty” into a city bus! What!?
ESPN…I don’t know if Buster Olney and Peter Gammons are trying to corner the market on cutting edge sports journalism but I’d wish they’d cool it just a bit. I’d rather be right and a bit late than wrong an early…Or speculative and early.

HOLY S? I'm still prepared to be disappointed but...If you click on the ESPN link above...
it now goes to an ESPN.com article entitled, “Henry: Red Sox outbid on Teixeira”…is this the work of the “Loose Cannon” Jim Bowden? Has someone else swooped (that’s not a word)…in and taken Teixeira? What’s going on here? Red Sox outbid? The Angels? The Yanks? The…Nationals????

Oh dear lord...
The only team that usually outbids is…
(replace 2005 w/ 2009)…just use your imagination.

I should erase that post!!!!
How dare you, Lou!! If the Yanks get Tex, I’m holding you personally responsible…and I hope he hits a HR to win the Subway Series over the Mets…Oh…Sorry…lost my temper there…

LOL! LOL!
Well, you can look at it this way too. If the Yanks sign him, I want a job either @ ESPN or at SB Nation for being prescient and harnessing my inner strength for baseless speculation.

"E"...
…I’m going back and forth and forth again between Nats, Sox, Mets. Some “mouth” @ Amazin said (conjectureds) that Nats proposed 10 years / $200 mil. They failed to provide a source…Go figure. Still searching the internetsphere…

“conjectured” (is that even a word? too lazy to look it up)…Oh boy, I’d make a grand journalist.

Noticed that John Henry's email reads...
…that the Red Sox dropped out, “After hearing about his other offers…” – which makes me think more than one team went over what was reported as 8-years/$184 from Boston…

oh god
I have that sick feeling in my stomach that JimBo is bidding against himself on this one. I mean no way the yankees can afford 200 million, right? Come on! If so, I’m bracing for some major changes in free agency. The Braves can’t cherry pick EVERYONE! Can’t we apply some anti-Trust laws in MLB? But at the same time, as long as we aren’t going into 200M range I won’t be too upset. That’s why I didn’t like us even floating the $160M offer. Because now we are just going to get played for an extra $20M and justify by saying ‘we wouldn’t want to miss out on a player of his caliber for $1-2M a year!’ I can see it now.

How can I go to bed now? They must have stopped negotiating for the day, right?...
…never count the Yankees out…they’re gonna make so much off this new stadium they probably can actually afford 200mill…
Plus…I have a sick feeling in my stomach in anticipation of having to eat my blog (literally) as I promised I’d do if DC signed Teixeira…I still don’t think it’s a good idea…I will not complain if I have to watch Teixeira all season…

Hmmm...
I’d temper that “stadium making money talk” due to current economics. But then again, when you have what, 22 million people in the greater metropolitan area NY, NJ, eastern PA to come to games, yeah…that stadium might just recoup its expenditures.
“E”, you’re a wise bird.
