TEIXEIRA UPDATE - 12/23/08 12:33 am EST - Did The Nationals Just Offer More Money To Mark Teixeira???
The title says it all. MLB.com's Lyle Spencer's article entitled, "Nationals may have upped Teixeira offer" reports that DC might have raised its initial offer of 8-years/$160M to somewhere in the neighborhood of 8-years/$178-$184M, ($22-$23M per?)...with Mr. Spencer also writing that:
"What's more, there are indications that the Nationals might be talked into going to nine or even 10 years."
What is it going to mean to the DC franchise if Teixeira turns down what is by far the biggest offer? Can Teixeira turn it down? If Washington's actually upped their offer, will anyone else join them? What's it gonna take? And when is it gonna happen already?...

Teixeira can do whatever suits him
That’s the joy of free agency. He doesn’t have to take the best offer in pure money terms. From his perspective…why wouldn’t he choose Boston for slightly less money? He’ll do better in terms of chances to reach the postseason, national media, endorsements.
A quick note on draft compensation to the Angles. If the Nats sign Tex they’ll be giving up the #1 pick in the second round of the amateur draft next year. The Angels will also get a “sandwich pick” which doesn’t come from another team and is selected between rounds one and two. This hurts me twice since I like both the Nats and the Mariners…whose arch-rivals are the Angels.
But even if this didn’t help the Angels specifically, I would rather see the Nationals use their money to add economical talent at three or four positions and save their high draft picks. It’s a better strategy…assuming cash is not unlimited.

The Nationals do have 2 1st Round picks though...
…I just read in this LA Times article that, “…The Angels will receive a first-round draft pick and a compensation pick between the first and second rounds in June as compensation for losing Teixeira,”…
Had to look into why you said it’s the 1st pick in the 2nd Round? So DC’s #1 overall pick is protected even if they sign Teixeira, and they can’t lose the compensatory Crow pick? So if they can get two 1st Round picks, first and ninth overall(if I remember correctly), does that make it more acceptable…since it’s essentially a 3rd pick they’re giving up to sign Teixeira??
Let’s just see if Boston doesn’t end all the conjecture tomorrow…or NY? Or the O’s???

If the pick's after the 15th in the 1st round, it goes. Otherwise, it's the next round.
At least, I think I’m doing that right.

That's how I read it
For a commenter further down the thread…teams who offer a player arbitration are entitled to receive compensation draft picks if that player signs elsewhere. The pick the team receives depends on the quality of the player. Tex is a “class A” player so it’s a first round pick. The exception is if the team signing the player is getting to pick between position 1 and 15 in the first round. Then the pick will be that team’s first pick in the second round.
The fact that the Nats have two picks in the first round really softens the blow of losing that pick. Because of that I’d say the main concern with this deal is the money. If you think the Nats will have a big enough fan base and TV audience to support that contract AND pay to fill the other 24 positions on the roster with something other than replacement-level players…this is not a bad deal. There’s no doubt it will create excitement around the team and may “put DC on the map” with other FA’s. Signing Sexson allegedly had this effect and helped the M’s sign the NL MVP (Beltre). The Sexson deal was terrible and he fell off a cliff…something Tex is unlikely to do. But it showed the league the M’s were serious. Signing Tex will have the same effect.
However, if the Nats have to go el-cheapo on the rest of the roster…well they’d better hope those two first-round picks join the 25-man roster pretty quickly. They won’t be able to fill too many slots with expensive veterans.

The Mariners are nowhere near the arch-rivals of the Angels. The Angels own the west.
The Red Sox are our arch-rivals FYI.

picks
It does hurt my soul to see the Nats give up first round draft picks in addition to all that money for this player. I don’t understand why they owe the Angels picks—-he’s not opting out of his contract is he? Why do the Angels get a retainer fee? Did we get the same from the cubs for soriano? I guess i just never looked into it before.

DC did get picks for Soriano...
…and I know they made good picks with them too, but I’m drawing a blank on who it was, and I’m not at my computer…it was ’07…with Detwiler, McGeary, etc…not sure which picks were the compensation picks…

…Oh woe is me…
I got a feeling though…
Wait, do I sound like Buster?

Whew! Done painting.
I’m exhausted. “E” you know that I’ve been scouring the air waves tryin’ to find out the latest.
Man, how do you turn down a beautiful woman who asks you to help with something? I TELL YA HOW! JUST SAY NO! Man, one wall turned into three and then she wanted to do two coats. Aw hell naw! (I didn’t actually say that, but I did tell her that I was only good for one coat). Anyhow…
Back at home and all I’m seeing on THE NET is that “Tex is getting closer”. “Where he wants to sign is ‘seemingly’ imminent.” Well glory be. That’s not news. :-)
I’m already hot under the collar about this article that Bob Klapisch (ESPN) wrote about how much more the METS will be despised throughout the league due to the acquisition of Francisco Rodriguez. Apparently he likes to celebrate when he wins…Uh, who doesn’t. But since when were the Mets “THE” despised team in baseball. I always thought that was the Yanks…And lately, “Cowboy Up” Nation. a.k.a. Red Sox.
Well, I’ll be home the rest of the evening…Standing by.

I feel bad
As I’ve noted on Camden Chat, it’s hard watching the Nationals make the same mistakes the O’s did 4-5 years ago.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

ESPN.com's Buster Olney says it's down to DC and Boston...
Washington Post writer Thom Loverro says the decision will come today…
What say you, Teixeira…
Thanks, Baltimo…the overwhelming feeling hear is that signing Tex is a bad move, but no one’s listening to us…

Olney saying the Yankees signed Tex...from the ESPN crawl

ESPN crawl is highly dubious...
I’m starting the vetting as we speak!

Well
You got it first eylf1004…
Just saw it as I turned on the t.v. Buster Olney reports. Yankees sign Tex for 8 yr / $170 million. Not only on scrawl but said by the reporter. Oh jesus…The wind just left our sails.

Well...I'm a bit flabbergasted by this one.
How the Yankees kept this so low on the radar and what other incentives Tex is likely to get is really going to be interesting.
“E”, I’ll let you get this started. Wow, this is like a punch in the stomach.
