Nats Announce Cabrera Deal
Here's the link to my full article:
http://natsnewsnetwork.blogspot.com/2008/12/nationals-officially-annouce-cabrera.html
A quick synopsis: Cabrera stinks. He's been lousy and he's getting worse. He used to be able to strike guys out, but either through injury or ineffectiveness, his K rates have dropped dramatically the last three years. He's led the AL in walks, wild pitches and hit batsman.
I crunched a bunch of numbers in my blog post, so if you want to read 'em, please click the link. Bottom line though: If he's healthy, I'll go on record and predict 185 innings, 9-14, 5.10 ERA, 1.555 WHIP. He'll take the ball every five days and stink.
Sorry, usually I try to present a balanced analysis. But Cabrera's had his chances. He just can't throw strikes with any regularity to get past mediocre.

Have to agree...
If you haven’t figured “it” out by 27-28, chance are you aren’t gonna…that’s why I was alright with Wilkerson and Church getting shipped in the past, and why I’m not in love with the idea of bring Cabrera in now…I’d much rather watch Shairon Martis or Jordan Zimmermann take their lumps than watch Cabrera struggled to find the plate…
Hope you’re having a good winter, at least the Caps are good…(just hope they don’t face the Penguins in the 1st Round of the Playoffs (giggles)…seriously though, when is Semin coming back?…he’s killing my fantasy roster…

Semin
will still be out a while. he wasn’t 100% when he tried to come back earlier. i’d say at least two weeks. he’s only just started skating again at practice.
i hate this signing. does it come out in my writing? (j/k)

After hearing about the possibility of Andruw Jones coming to the Mets...
…I don’t know if I can muster the strength to even debate this guy Cabrera. Right now I am beside myself. I’m beginning to wonder if I have reached the limits of my blogging / pundit / conjecture ability.
Do you know what would be nice? If the front office was required once a week, hell, bi-weekly to publish a bulletized power point of what were the reasons they chose the player(s) they did. I’m not asking for them to publish what they “plan” on doing. Everyone has a strategy and I’m sure they don’t want to tip off to other teams and players what they are “attempting” to do. But I sure would like some kind of brief on why the organization made the decision it did.
So many bloggers provide all of these fantastic stats that either provide sound reasononing for or against acquiring a player. Wouldn’t it be nice to hear and / or see this same kind of lucid and high quality analytic discourse presented by the General Managers? All we get is bland and cliched comments such as: “We believe he’s got a lot of upside and that he can do wonderful things for our club.” R U KIDDING?
Can you imagine walking into a prospective employer for an interview and saying: “I’ve got a lot of upside and can do wonderful things for your company.” The employer would probably shoot back: “That’s it? That’s all you’ve got to say? Let me see your resume’. You want me to give you $3 million a year for that? LOL! Get the hell out of here.” (That’s what I would say).
Hopefully Spring Training will do some of the talking for the GM’s.

The Mets need a day on the backpage, Lou.
I’ve already read about the Mets backing away from these stories…what happened to Andruw Jones might go down as one of the biggest mysteries in baseball…and i don’t think it had anything to do with performance enhancement issues…just to be clear…
The Mets can’t trust Church after his shaky season, physically speaking, when he played he was making me angry…he tore up the NL East to start the season…but I wouldn’t be surprised, and would probably recommend adding another outfielder…Andruw? I don’t know…and I really hope not…I was glad to see him leave the NL East…

Yeah, apparently this was just early winter season talk.

Lou, that's why we're here
Unfortunately, the majority of GMs still cling to old school scouting and anecdotal description of “tools”. that should be part of the equation, but statistical analysis should be part of it as well. if you look at Cabrera and his “tools”, of course the traditional GM will salivate. he’s tall, throws hard (at least he used to), and strikes people out (at least he used too). but if you look at the stats, such as the ones i detailed, you can see his deterioration as an effective pitcher.

I do, however believe in the Extraordinary Randy St. Claire...
…but if Cabrera’s not lights out this Spring even $2.6M is gonna look bad…

NNN. Ohhhhhh...I know. I think I'm just having MLB withdrawls
No action, all talk. I might have to resort to playing MLB on playstation in order to get my fix.

I found it funny that dcbaseball.com thinks adding Cabrera bolsters the rotation. If he bolsters our rotation, that means our rotation improved from god awful to terrible.

In a best case scenario, he bolsters the back end of the rotation...
