GameThread: Florida Marlins at Washington Nationals- 2008 Game 37 of 162.

Miami Marlins at Washington Nationals, May 10, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

On the Hill...

Game two of three against the visiting Florida Marlins will see the return to the Washington Nationals' starting rotation of Mike "Lefty" O'Connor, who will oppose another young left-hander Andrew Miller on the mound in Nationals Park tonight at 7:10 pm EST.

Mike O'Connor (1-0, 6.35 ERA) last faced the Marlins back on July 18th, 2006, throwing 5.1 innings and allowing 8 hits, 5 ER(3 in the first inning), 2 HR's, and 2 walks in a 7-6 Nationals' loss in which O'Connor received no decision. The only other time O'Connor's pitched against the Marlins, the then-rookie lefty didn't last past the first, giving up 4 hits, 5 ER, 1 walk, and 2 HR's before being replaced at the start of the second. So it seems that if O'Connor can survive the first in tact, the Nationals might have a shot at avoiding losing their fourth straight to Florida. That's a combined (0-1) with a 14.21 ERA and 12 hits, 10 runs, and 4 HR's in 6.1 IP for O'Connor against the Fish.

Since coming over in the Miguel Cabrera trade from Detroit, Florida's lefty Andrew Miller is (2-2) with a 7.96 ERA over 31.2 IP in 7 starts as a Marlin this season, with 52 hits and 28 ER's allowed. Miller has yet to record a decision in two starts against DC over his three big league campaigns, allowing 14 hits and 9 ER in 8.1 innings pitched.

Dave: "There's no defensing walks.."

I tuned in just in time for O’C to walk the house. Argh.

Heh, Charlie and Dave are trying to figure Hanny's stats for tonight...

Namely, whether he allowed three inherited runners to score or four… (His walk counted against O’C because there was a 2-0 count.)

There was also an amusing dig at Wikipedia.

Okay, there’s a positive—Charlie and Dave are still the best radio announcers in MLB.

Dave's understatement of the game...

“Tonight has not been a great night on the field for the Nats…”

They’re talking about the Curly-W pretzels at great length. And they are quite delicious, in spite of being $6…

The comment about using "Mr. Jones" is the only one that annoyed me...

...is the NY Times being condescending or silly when they write like that? Ahh maybe i shouldn’t follow the style of that
that “liberal rag”...

Blogging is generally more colloquial than dead-tree writing

Remember your place! We’re not professionals. I actually heard it as slightly sarcastic, but I was probably projecting. As that commenter may have been. (Psychoanalyzing people on the internet is even more fun than carping about their writing styles!)

Yes, and 11-0 games leave lots of time for psychoanalysis...

... and the writing probably does come off as odd when it’s put side to side with all the other newspaper articles the site…uh…cites…

So far, the play of the game?

Either the delivery of the curly-W pretzel, or the grinding and brewing of the [product-placed] coffee to the radio booth. Charlie and Dave are thinking pretzel.

Charlie has one loop left of his pretzel.

Dave’s is “gone, goodbye.” As he put it, “My curly W is in the books.”

Pretzels updates to follow as they become available.

I think Charlie and Dave are smoking out right now.

There’s some extended discussion of “two-run leadoff homers” and more slamming of wikipedia. It’s probably much more interesting that the game. And now they’re riffing on Carpenter, and I can’t tell if it’s good-natured ribbing or what. It’s all good. And more interesting than the game.

Dozen run rally! Everyone goes yard!

Or maybe I’ll just get some ice cream. This is making me hungry too, and I ran out of booze about 25 innings ago (at least that’s what it feels like).

The rally begins!

Woo-hoo! Wee Willie make the most of the error!

by Doghouse on May 10, 2008 10:02 PM EDT reply actions

BOOOOOOO!

I don’t care how good a play, that’s just greedy.

EVERYONE GOES YARD!

That may be the coffee ice cream talking…

by Doghouse on May 10, 2008 10:05 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, I'll be there. Any day at ball park is a good one.

Let’s hope the game’s a bit better. Shawn didn’t have the greatest start last time, but here’s hoping he’s getting back in the groove! And that, uh, everyone’s bats wakes up (and Guz’s stays awake). (Okay, Guz’s and Snowman’s bats stay awake.)
