Caught a few minutes of Jason Bergmann talking to Dave Jaegler on last night's pre-game show (of course, this was on the way to the movies, so I missed the actual game). They talked about mechanics, and his career-long struggles to keep from "opening up," which takes away the bite on his curve and turns his slider in an "86-mph BP fastball." Talking about the series with Colorado (remember that? good times!), he tried to mix in more two-seamers to keep the ball down, but he was still behind on his fly-ball/grounder ratio. Aside from the quote in the title of the post, he also said, "I could throw a ground ball and they'd still find a way to hit it in the air."
A quick scan of team stats shows that he's exaggerating slightly--his 27.9 GB% is only second worst on the entire staff, in front of Tyler Clippard's 21.2%. He's not even in the bottom 20 in the NL (coming in at 24th-worst among NL pitchers this year... although half the people in front of him have 10IP or less--his 100+IP are by the far the highest until you get to Oliver Perez at #45).
