2010 Forecast: Beware of the Bandwagon
So far, it's safe to say, Nationals fans haven't been "wowed" in terms of offseason acquisitions. Signing a guy like Ivan Rodriguez is more puzzling than exciting (until we found out about Flores' being out until February that is). The team has yet to make a splash in the trade department, unless you count acquiring Brian Bruney. Washington made the questionable decision of non-tendering Mike MacDougal in order to save some cash for a veteran arm. The Nats did the same to Scott Olsen, but he resigned the very next day for a one-year, incentive laden contract with a base salary of $1 million. Time will tell if Mac does the same, but after converting 20 of 21 saves, there's got to be a team out there willing to pay him (especially when looking back on the junk pile the Nats bullpen was).
Who is the veteran arm the Nationals are desperately after? Jason Marquis? Joel Pineiro? Jon Garland? It won't be John Lackey, who recently landed a mega-deal with the Boston Red Sox, but let's face it Nats Nation, we all knew that wasn't going to happen anyway. Why also, couldn't the Nats get involved in the Edwin Jackson sweepstakes? My guess is that they didn't want to get ripped off like the Diamondbacks did, a smart move by Rizzo. In fact, I believe that the Nationals relatively quiet offseason is a smart move by Rizzo as well. Every thumbs down Jim Bowden gives the offseason, is a thumbs up. Besides, there's still some noise to be made, and I'm happy the Nats haven't overpayed anyone this early into the offseason (exception: Pudge). The next paragraph may come as a shock to realists out there, but give it a chance.
After losing 100+ games in two consecutive seasons, Washington did something two years in a row that has only happened twice in franchise history. The team lost 110 games in the Montreal Expos inagural season (1969), and 107 in 1976. After 1969, the Expos went on to have 70+ wins in six consecutive years, and after '76, the team won 90+ games in back to back seasons just 3 years after the 107-loss debacle. Are pleasant times ahead in Washington? Top Draft picks like Stephen Strasburg and Drew Storen are positive signs of the future, and another 1st overall selection in 2010 hurts no one but the Nats Accountants. What I'm saying is this: Let's look out for the bandwagon jumpers, because they are coming. Washington is a solid defensive infielder away from having a competent crew in the dirt. The Nationals are one bull pen arm away from having a not-so-laughable corps for the later innings. The team just needs one veteran arm in the rotation to get this shored up and prevent another 100-loss season.
I'm not saying the Nats will make the playoffs if they add a MI, RP and SP of quality proportions, but I am saying they will improve to the realm of 70+ wins. You don't win 100 games after losing 100 games, but you can get there by steady progress. With an intelligent Front Office, Washington is headed in that direction, the final pieces just need to be brought together. The future of the franchise looks bright, and let's all sit back and relax knowing the few that have been around before the bandwagoners came to town. Because trust me, they are coming. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

You have to look no further than the Wizards a few years ago, and the Capitals now. If a Washington team wins, they’re popular (unless their name is DC United!).
I agree with you that letting MacDougal go was risky, however I don’t think his save/save opportunity is fooling anyone. GM’s care a lot about strikeout to walk ratio with bullpen arms, and thats probably why everyone is so hot to get Matt Capps (good stuff, great control) over MacDougal, (great stuff, bad control).
Wherever MacDougal goes, even if it’s Washington, probably wont reveal itself until after Capps signs.

Mets suck - Now who's gonna pitch after Johan
During a Monday conference call with the media, Mets GM Omar Minaya confessed he had “no idea” he was permitted to make player transactions between baseball seasons. “I guess that makes sense. I was always a little surprised when teams came back the next spring with different players,” said Minaya, adding that he just assumed most teams made the last of their personnel decisions during Game 7 of the World Series. “I’ve already contacted the agents for Hideki Matsui and John Lackey to try and convince them to play here for free, and I’m working on a trade for Johnny Bench. He’s got something to prove.” Minaya said the revelation that he would be working through the winter gave him all the more reason to look forward to his annual October vacation.
Welcome Back, Otto...
Minaya’s ignorance of the rules finally explains the Expos’ No September Call-ups policy…

MacDougal. Really?
I can’t take analysis seriously when they cite 20 of 21 save opps converted as a reason to pay Macdougal $3m+. More walks than Ks? That’s damn hard to do. Mostly its hard to do because that pitcher will quickly get his ass handed to him and be on the first bus to Columbus. Best move of the off season so far was nontendering Macdougal.
Second best is not spending for any of those veteran arms yet. Wait till the price of their mediocrity matches the market.
A better question is: Why aren’t they using their financial advantage to get better faster? No international signings. Haven’t tried to vulture cash strapped franchises like Tampa, Detroit or even the Dodgers. Just more of the same crap (LoDuca 2.0 for example)
I think
I look at Mac’s 2009 season as a success because of the shoddy overall bullpen the Nationals had. The 20 of 21 save opps is a bit misleading, but how many other Nats had success saving games? Maybe it was all smoke and mirrors because of his poor K:BB ratio, so I’m not complaining that this team didn’t give him $3 million. I just think it’s risky on a 103-loss team’s part to let their “best” bullpen arm go, and I hope it pays off.
Alex Smith may have been the #1 overall pick but he still can’t tell why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

I try every year to get behind the Nats, and it drops down fast. I know I’m not the most hardcore, but I root for the Nationals until they’re out of it, and then the Cardinals. I grew up spending summers just outside of St. Louis, and we had the Cannon’s affiliated with them.
I mention this because I think there’s a ton of guys like me, who want to get behind the Nats, but it’s obviously tough. I signed petitions and joined groups to help get the Nats here, and I want them to get good, and fast. So, maybe if I force myself to start posting here more, I’ll find myself more getting behind you guys. And, if I’m a bandwagoner, I’m a bandwagoner.

That's exactly why we've labeled Federal Baseball an unofficial support group....
The Washington Nationals are a small indie band right now with a few great songs the truly devoted dig… get on board now so when they become the major label band of this strained metaphor, you can be amongst those complaining about all the new fans who don’t know the whole story…

Hi I'm Bernie...I'm a Nats fan. I use to be a Cards fan, too..but now...all I do is ...
live eat and breathe Washington Nationals. Is it a problem? I don’t think so.
ED YOU RULE !!!
I love your indie bandish metaphor…Awesome.
I’m getting close to that. Signing a guy like Marquis might bring me over, as Pudge’s signing has me thinking baseball for the first time during hockey season for the first time…ever.

sounds like someone from Montreal
thinking baseball for the first time during hockey season for the first time…ever
although that statement wouldn’t fly over too well in Habville.

I love these people.
Your team sucks. Your owners are cheap. You city lies in ruins. You child run with scissors and your Mother didn’t change your pants enough when you were younger. You paid to much for your muffler. Hahahahahahahah! And this is a Red’s fan. Hahahahahahah!
Merry Freakin’ Christmas to me. Please come back with comments like this again Daedalus. You lived through Marge, we’ll live through this because we love having baseball in DC.
