Washington Nationals' GM Mike Rizzo Chats With The DC Faithful.
DC GM Mike Rizzo will be online to answer your questions in a chat at the Nationals' official site starting at 12:00 noon today. You can submit questions ahead of time if you like, I already did, asking Mr. Rizzo why he was the only out-of-town GM at the Aroldis Chapman sessions, and wondering where he saw Roger Bernadina and Justin Maxwell starting the season...Check back later to see if he answered...

…both my questions were asked already and the chat won’t work on my iPhone….boo!
Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

Pretty generic boilerplate from Rizzo........
Good luck with the write-up about this one…
Mezza: ''Are we there yet?'' ...Roscoe: "In baseball hell? Yes we are."
— without making a deal," Rizzo said."

12:00 pm After the moves made thus far this postseason, what position(s) would you still like to upgrade?
Mike_Rizzo:
12:04 pm Even with the addition of a quality back of the bullpen arm like Brian Bruney and a veteran catcher like Ivan Rodriguez, I still feel it is important to address the starting pitching, bullpen arms and middle infield defense. As was evident at the end of the 2009 season, and with the addition of defensive stalwart Nyjer Morgan, we’ve placed a great emphasis on defensive efficiency and run prevention.
Natsfan1:
12:04 pm What is National’s current level of interest in Bryce Harper?
Mike_Rizzo:
12:06 pm Bryce has been identified as one of the elite players to consider in the upcoming Rule 4 Draft for 2010. He has been and will continue to be scouted and evaluated very closely and is on the Washington Nationals’ radar along with a handful of other top prospects.
goinggoinggone2:
12:06 pm How is Roger Bernadina progressing from his ankle injury?
Mike_Rizzo:
12:09 pm Roger has been cleared to participate fully in all baseball activity. He started participating again as far back as the Instructional League in October.
sen8tors:
12:11 pm Hi Mike. Would the Nationals Organization consider switching back to using the “Senators” as its team name?
Mike_Rizzo:
12:14 pm As far as I’m concerned, I am quite pleased to be known as the Washington Nationals. That said, we are always cognizant and respectful of those that came before us in what is an area with a rich baseball history.
jcj5y:
12:15 pm Has the team kept in close contact with Stephen Strasburg since the end of the AFL? How is his rehab progressing?
Mike_Rizzo:
12:17 pm We have been monitoring Stephen very carefully since the conclusion of the Arizona Fall League. We are pleased to say that his rehabilitation and strengthening program has been very successful and we fully expect Stephen to be 100-percent healthy to participate at the beginning of Major League Spring Training.
natsfan22:
12:17 pm The Justin Maxwell I saw in September impressed me with how much improved he looked, do you see him playing a bigger roll this season?
Mike_Rizzo:
12:20 pm We believe that Justin has grown as a player both on and off the field and fully anticipate him competing for playing time with the other talented outfielders we have. His makeup and positive attitude have been contagious in our clubhouse setting.
vanatsfan5:
12:21 pm It was reported that you attended Aroldis Chapman workout. What was your impression of him?
Mike_Rizzo:
12:23 pm Aroldis is a extremely talented, athletic left-handed pitcher with a ceiling as high as any current amateur pitcher in the world. He has great arm strength and velocity on his fastball and is just in his infancy as a frontline Major League prospect.
DCJohn:
12:25 pm Last year the Nationals invited 87 players to Spring Training. The norm is much lower. How many players do intend to invite?
Mike_Rizzo:
12:29 pm The current status of the franchise allows us to be much more selective in the process of Major League Spring Training invites. By doing this, it allows the players, who are there, extended looks, at-bats and innings to prove themselves. I see the numbers that are invited to Spring Training to be fewer than in the past.

12:31 pm Are there any plans to sign a veteran middle infielder? Who?

rstbef:
12:31 pm Are there any plans to sign a veteran middle infielder? Who?
Mike_Rizzo:
12:34 pm It is on our priority list of things to do. The player to fill that position could vary but we understand with the makeup of our club we need to improve in that spot. The upgrade could come a number of different ways— be it by in-house candidate, trade or Free Agent acquisition.
goinggoinggone2:
12:34 pm Do you see Shairon Martis in the mix for an opportunity to be in the starting rotation?
Mike_Rizzo:
12:37 pm Shairon will come to Spring Training competing for a rotation spot with a number of other talented candidates. As a 22-year-old, he performed well in the early portion of 2009 and with another year of experience under his belt we believe he will take the next step in his development in 2010.
...and finaly... (Huge waste of time IMO)
Mike_Rizzo:
12:39 pm We only have time for one more question.
joshdc:
12:39 pm What criteria are you looking for as you consider adding starting pitching to the 2010 roster?
Mike_Rizzo:
12:43 pm The pitchers that we are looking for to join the Nationals must be of high character, with successful and consistent histories who are willing to share their experiences and wisdom with our deep stable of young arms.
Mike_Rizzo:
12:44 pm Thanks for your questions. Happy Holidays to all of you… only 64 days until pitchers and catchers report.
...pathetic....
Rizzo was probably just taking a short lunch and answering in between bites of sandwich….

Someone should've asked what kind of sandwich he was eating....
Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."
by Patrick Reddington on Dec 17, 2009 1:21 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
That would have been as useful, I suppose....
My other alternate reality had Rizzo madly cutting deals (to be announced shortly!!), while having an assistant type up empty replies for his approval….
nah, ham on rye….

I think Doghouse is still in the lab trying to figure out how his 70+ win WAR projections went wrong...
I miss Doghouse and the foul-mouthed Mrs. D…

OK, i really gained about 20 lbs last season cause I didn’t sleep and ate naught but junk between games…

No joke....all I could think of was...
do people REALLY eat this kind of thing?
But who am I to talk?
I’m getting ready to make chocolate truffles tonight…to give away, of course. Really.
Alas, I’m allergic to the heavy cream in them!
