WHOSE TOWN IS THIS???
Most of you probably read this before I did, but I didn't see it until Caps' Owner Ted Leonsis was quoted in the most recent edition of the hockey bible, THE HOCKEY NEWS, stating (or, I guess, "writing" on his blog):
"DC is a Caps hockey town."
Afterwards, pointing out that while DC may be a "Caps town" today, it hasn't always been that way, Hockey News' writer Peter Kerzel adds that now, "...this may be true because the competition - MLB's Nationals, the NBA's Wizards and NFL's Redskins - can't win for losing."
So, as I'm off to watch my first football game of the year, (the Super-something?), I ask you...
WHOSE TOWN IS THIS????(And Dave from the Nats News Network, you'd better answer Nationals.")

I would think that...
…Unless the respective team has won at least one championship, it has no claim on being the city’s team. So, I think that distinction belongs to the Redskins no?

unfortunately
i cannot vote for the Nats or Caps in this poll. this was, is and forever shall be the Redskins’ town unfortunately. not even Dan Snyder and Vinnie Cerrato’s ineptness has been able to kill it.
the Nats fan base is not where it needs to be. the team does a lousy job marketing and advertising. the scare tacticts last season about taking the metro were beyond deplorable, causing so many people to stay away altogether. rich people don’t take public transportation! the expensive seats were hardly filled. do the math.
as for the Caps, there’s an extremely loyal, utterly rabid fan base—of about 19,000 people. it’s the same people that go every single game. but if you walk down the street in DC and ask 10 people who their favorite DC team is, more people are still gonna answer “Georgetown basketball” than the Caps. but more folks know and are aware of the Caps because a) their marketing is excellent and b) they are good.
by the way, if you like the Caps, feel free to visit Caps News Network, one of the many quality Caps blogs in town. i know the guy that writes over there pretty well :-)

hmmm...
As an overall sports fan and a person who lives and drives all over d.c. and the outlying areas, I haven’t seen or heard of much marketing done on behalf of the Caps (or Nats), nor have I seen much Caps pride via locals wearing the Caps “swag”. I see more Nationals gear on exhibition than I do Caps gear. The W. Post doesn’t really sell the Caps either. However, the W. Post’s coverage of the NHL isn’t too bad.
I’ll keep my eye out.

Redskins
This is undoubtedly a Redskins town. Whoever happens to be #2 at a given time is usually there because they’re a winner. People around here get passionate for the Redskins, and besides that, it’s a bunch of bandwagon-hopping.
Right now, the Caps are probably #2, but the Wizards do hold a natural advantage.
The Nats are #4 right now, but they can become big if they start winning. You can tell that this area WANTS to embrace them, but they’re such losers right now, and not in a lovable way.
