my quick take...
Putting aside purely baseball aspect of this deal, the numbers will be extremely interesting once they are announced. Is it a multi-year deal? How much, if anything, did the Nats have to overpay? How much did the pull of Austin Kearns and Ryan Zimmerman have to do with negotiations?
As for the baseball side of it? Wow, where to start?
IF Nick Johnson is healthy, this team just got A LOT better. It still doesn’t have a legitimate lead-off guy, but it now has a legit 3-4-5-6 in Johnson, Dunn, Zimm and Dukes. And the battle for playing time in the OF just got a lot more crowded.
If Johnson cannot revive his career, then expect Dunn at first, with an OF of Willingham-Milledge-Dukes.
It’s not outside the realm of possibility that Bowden still moves an outfielder, regardless of Johnson’s health. But having Dunn on the roster makes all of these scenarios easier to imagine.
Kudos to the front office once this contract gets signed. Whether it’s one year or several, it was the right thing to do on so many levels.

Welcome to DC Adam Dunn. To me, it’s a great signing. I guarantee we probably had to offer at least 2 million per year more than other teams, but the Abreu signing made Dunn have to pick fast. I believe I read somewhere that he was at a sports institute all winter getting into great shape. Hopefully also taking grounders and short hop throws and long hop throws at first.
He got way more ABs against righties of course and his HRs were 30 aganst RHP and 10 against LHP.

depends
on how well dukes, milledge and anderson can mature as players offensively (and milledge’s case in defense as well)
I believe the nats will have a good rotation this year if zimmermann gets called up or plays the whole season. We’d have a 1-2 punch with zimmermann and lannan with hopefully one of the younger guys having a decent year to fill in the 3rd slot, a 1-2-3 decency with a rotation can survive the NL East.
granted i think we’ll be better to contend in ‘10 but if we get above .500 this year, we’re making some big improvements.
I do hope they keep johnson and trade kearns to free up our outfield for Dunn. If dunn plays 1B then definitaly trade johnson to the A’s for Barton. (ahh, ex-cardinal prospect i liked so much behind the plate instead of at 1B)

…coming off injuries, due $8M…i think some of these guys will have to prove they’re healthy before anyone will come looking…

Welcome to DC. I guess.
I have mixed emotions. If it’s $10M/yr for 2, I can’t be too mad—he won’t be plugging up the OF for that long, and it’s only twice what we gave DY. If he can hit homers in a real ballpark, too, maybe it’ll be good for tickets/viewership. Of course, I’ve noted elsewhere that Dunn-K doesn’t get us much; the dingers are nice, but his craptastic fielding means he costs us about half a WAR at both 1B and LF. In fact, TAWH is worth more wins in LF than Dunn is (his expected -13 runs of defense in a corner OF spot is even worse than Hammer). Sorry to go all NNN on y’all, but Dunn won’t get us to 0.500. I’ll update the WAR analysis later this week if I can figure out where to plug him in, but he doesn’t help the win total (unless we assume NJ explodes during Spring training).

I'll give you the respect thing...
…adding Dunn is a help beyond his on-field performance. He’s our first “big” free agent since Soriano. He may free up pieces to trade for long-term building blocks. It may get the team more credibility with other free agents and teams for the next round of deals. Hell, he may even learn to catch. I had mis-remembered my stats—Dunn actually gains us half a win if he plays most of the season in LF instead of Willingham. And who knows—maybe the “big, left-handed, middle-of-order bat” will actually provide some synergy for the rest of the order. Dukes/Zimmy/Dunn/NJ (in whatever order) might give me a little pause as an opposing pitcher.

but all of my curiosity is into starting pitching
what do olsen and cabrera do?
does hill pitch for half a season?
zimmermann and detweiler when/why?

Heck, what does Odalis Perez do?
I’m starting to eye the Perez bandwagon. He’s reasonably reliable, if unspectacular, so I can see him in the Opening Day rotation to give Zimmermann some time at AAA. Hill is a big unknown (probably Cabrera, too—a pile of still-unrealized potential, or does he break through this year and manage to keeps his Ks up and his BBs down at the same time). It’s going to come down to how they look in Spring, I guess.

if there isn’t a trade, here’s where i see the staff on OD:

As a fan it gives me faith that the Nats are willing to spend some money, and not just talk about spending money. It also makes me think that they’re not thought of as a helpless organization who no one worth signing wants to sign with. (This sure beats the Daniel Cabrera signing!) We we’re looking a lot like the Royals or Pirates.
Suddenly, now the Teixeira non-signing and the Aaron Crow debacle don’t seem so bad anymore. (Well, the Aaron Crow thing still sucks… but you know what I mean, right?)
Also don’t so easily dismiss “selling tickets”. The more tickets they sell, the less they can use lack of support as an excuse for not spending money.
by superjuan on Feb 11, 2009 5:39 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Here here!!
It can’t be seen as anything else but a positive for the organization…(especially by those who’ll probably never read that Dunn had the offer extended for like EVER, didn’t seem to want it, but eventually now took it)…that free agents might be willing to sign with DC…
Nothing will make me forget the Crow debacle…
Selling tickets is a good thing, but you’re or I guess, the Nationals are counting on the fact that fans will come to see Dunn hit home runs on what still doesn’t figure to be a competitive team…
Or does this make DC a competitor in your, or anyone else who reads this’s eyes…

there's not enough pitching to compete...
THIS year. but who knows NEXT year? Zimmermann and Strasburg (i hope) both should be part of the equation next spring, with Lannan and Bally/Mock/Bergy and Olsen. and should they open the purse strings for a #1 next year?
i’m not getting all optimistic, cause that ain’t my style (see my sig). but a rational evaluation of the batting order says that’s a major league lineup anyway. which is better than the last two years. having a cleanup hitter makes a TON of difference. now i just want to see Dukes explode this season.

Yeah, I wouldn’t call them a competitor, but at least now when the Nats are down 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth I can realistically hope that with a walk and a Dunn at bat the team is more likely to make a comeback.
Will he draw more people to Nationals Park? I think so. Look, he hit as many home runs as our top 3 hitters combined, so that has to count for something. The San Francisco Giants had essentially the same record last year as the year before, and their attendance dropped by almost 5,000/game. The main difference? No Bonds in the lineup last year.
And as much as people want to slam his strikeout rate, his OBP last year would have tied for first place on the Nats (for guys with more than 200 AB).
Finally, he’s an asset. If two years from now the Nats are still sucking we can trade him for what would very likely be something better than what we’ll have to trade away to make room for him.

2/20 is a steal
Dunn carries a high OBP and OPS+, along with his guarantee of 40 home runs. A lot of people got sick of Dunn because he became predictable= strikeout, walk, or home run….but 2 outta 3 ain’t bad. The key here is, an out is an out. He will have more strikeouts than anyone on your team and a batting average likely under .250. But more importantly his OBP will be just under .400, his OPS+ in the 130s, and his slugging above .500.
His defense, while not great…is not poor(speaking LF here) he only carries a bad rep because someone that large cannot look graceful in the OF. Decent base runner, who does not make mistakes. Also he is a ‘tough as nails’ gamer and will play ever game that he is not forced to sit out. The last five years he played all but 19 games, and ten of those came from one year!
Finally, the dude is hilarious. Be sure to catch his interviews, he has a hysterical dry wit and being back with Kearns is likely to make him even goofier. He has a laid back personality that some call disrespectful or go so far to say ‘he does not enjoy playing the game.’ Horseshit. Enjoy Dunn for what he is, don’t gripe for what he is not.

Enjoy Dunnderbolt, Nats fans.
It’ll certainly be interesting to see whether Dunn can hit exactly 40 home runs at Nationals Park, as he did at (primarily) Great American Ballpark and Chase Field over the past 4 years.
