Citi Field: Federal Baseball.com Behind Enemy Lines At The New York Mets' New Home.
(ed. note - "A friend of mine had an extra ticket to the St. John's/Georgetown Big East Baseball matchup which was serving as a "soft opening" for the New York Mets' new home, Citi Field, in Flushing, Queens, NY. I apologize for the photo quality. While the iPhone is the greatest phone ever made, it does not have a quality camera...What follows after the jump is a quick pictorial report on the first of two ballpark openings to take place in New York this Spring...")
Citi Field...
The entrance to the Jackie Robinson Rotunda...modeled after Ebbets Field's entrance...
The brick walkway is way too "Mets"...a friend, who happens to be a fan of the Mets, wanted to buy one of these, I said the inscription should read, "Thanks, Mr. Buckner."
Directions to get around the Citi...
The Jackie Robinson Rotunda: Alright, the inside of this is absolutely beautiful...
#42...
The walkways are lined with Mets of yore...If you look closely you can see my childhood hero, Gary Carter...uh, well I liked him as a Montreal Expos' catcher, but whatever....
The first glimpse of the playing field...and scoreboard...
The left field pole and the view down the line...
The Home Run Apple...
Perfect...
I'll let the Mets' Official Site explain this bridge in the outfield...
"• A structural steel "bridge" motif throughout Citi Field reinforces the Mets' connection to New York's five boroughs while also symbolically linking the team's storied tradition to its future. Design elements call for exposed trusses, light towers, scoreboard structure, and a roof canopy that recall the ballparks of yesteryear."
A little piece of Shea...(At least I think it is...they built a new apple so...)
Hope I didn't spoil the new stadium experience for NY Mets' fans...can't wait to get to see the Nationals play here...Friday night, April 24th...

Fantastic "E"! Thanks for getting these pics and displaying them for all of us hated Mets fans.
That pic of the home plate area taken from the foul pole, are those suites behind the section at home plate? And are there seats on top of those suites? That’s an interesting design. Seems to take away from the crows numbers but still an interesting design.

There are boxes, lounges and restaurants that look out on the field like that, not sure which that is, either way I wasn't allowed in there...

Nice digs.
Ed, how was the chow there?
Best line of the day in my opinion…
“The trustee for Bernard Madoff’s investment company may soon sell Madoff’s New York Mets season tickets. Not good enough. As part of his prison sentence, the prince of Ponzi should be given a TV in his cell that gets only Washington Nationals games.”

We have a ways to go.
Leave the Nationals out of the Madoff thing...that's one scandal this winter they had nothing to do with...

Madoff should be made to clean the stadium's toilet facilities once a week.
ALL OF THEM BY HIMSELF!

The original Wilkerson opted out of his relationship with the Red Sox...
We need more backup outfielders.
Maybe that can be Stan’s April Fools joke on us in a couple days.
I have a new post, written last night, ready to go, but I was tired...and I'm not sure about it...
…I’ll try to put some form of it up before game time today….
check back…

Early lineup for today's game.
Nick Johnson — DH
Cristian Guzman — SS
Ryan Zimmerman — 3B
Adam Dunn — 1B getting a lot of practice over there. Hmmm.
Elijah Dukes — CF
Josh Willingham - LF RF
Austin Kearns -
Jesus Flores — C welcome back Jesus.
Willie Harris — 2B
Right-hander Shairon Martis will get the start for the Nationals
Chico's list of out-of-options players "The next batch of cuts is coming today"
Of note, Kory Casto, Mike Hinckley, and Steven Shell. With Manny’s comments yesterday about September experience, I take it that Hinkley beats out Ledezma and Shell is safe for now.
I don’t know how they can make a case for Kory, though.

It seems clear in the backup catcher race that loyalty to the borderline players isn’t a factor, so this would lead me to believe Casto is history.
I want the best players on the field and on the bench.
Like Shawn Hill, I will wish Casto the best.
Unless they're trying to sneak Casto through waivers on the last day
He’s got to be cut today so he can latch on elswhere. That would be better for him, I would think.

I think having a spare switch-hitting emergency pinch hitter with MLB experience is worth dropping a little catching quality one day a week.
But…I will have no problem if they keep Nieves.
Both are good options.
But, with only the two and no real 3rd emergency catcher.......
Bard doesn’t get to be a late inning replacement, let alone a PH. And he won’t be coming in for defence…..
by cat daddy3000 on Mar 30, 2009 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions
He's no Frank Robinson, who drove me crazy using up the bench and bullpen by the 9th of a tie game
That’s why I hoped they might keep 3 of the 4 catchers, in case Valentin or Bard could be used as you say. But, that bench advantage pales in needing, say Alberto to make it to help with the infield situation…… or, the OF glut.
Or, a wild six hours. Dmitri is scheduled for 7 innings in a minor league game today.
… Something -All- will may or may not be revealed shortly at some time in the near who the he** knows……..

Somebody named Stammen is starting for us tomorrow. Any clue who that is?
Today we’re supposed to throw Beimel and Glover after Martis.
Posted by: Brian_ | March 30, 2009 11:33 AM on Nats Journal
“Craig Stammen was a 2005 12th round draft pick (out of Dayton IIRC). Has spent time as both a starter and reliever. Solid 2008 in Hariisburg. Got knocked around a bit in Columbus.”

Good for him...
This should be a thrill. Lots of relievers on the list tomorrow. May be the final audition.
Hey y'all, looks like there's no XM coverage either, so I'll be following on the box score as well...
Here’s the Game Thread info i’d written, it was part of a post entitled, “The 2009 Washington Nationals, The Federal Baseball.com W.A.R. Effort and Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Pi’”…which I may or may not publish later, (it got a little crazy)…but we’ll just keep the game thread here, since it’s late and you’re already here…
GAME THREAD…
Today’s GAME THREAD…
Live From Space Coast…The Washington Nationals welcome the Detroit Tigers for a 1:05 pm EST matchup which will feature Shairon Martis on the mound against fomer Montreal Expos’ and DC prospect Armando Galarraga, who was traded, along with Brad Wilkerson and Terrmel Sledge to the Texas Rangers for Alfonso Soriano on December 8, 2005, and was then moved to the Tigers in February 2008.
My favorite quote all weekend was from Washington’s “Acting” GM Mike Rizzo, who let the scout in him out while responding, (as quoted in an article entitled, “D. Young Added To 40-Man Roster” by Washington Post writer Chico Harlan) to Mr. Harlan, who asks how Shairon Martis had managed to remain off most scout’s radars:
“…He doesn’t knock your eyes out with the radar gun. He’s a sinker-slider pitcher. He’s a command guy. And he’s a poise guy beyond his years. And he’s a 22-year-old pitcher that doesn’t throw 95 mph. He gets you out by commanding four quadrants of the plate with three pitches, and those aren’t the guys who really are the sexy type of prospect. So I think that’s the reason why he was under the radar. He certainly was not under the radar when we made the trade for him, and he certainly was not under the radar this winter when we talked about the long-term plan for the Nationals.”
Martis gets his first start since being named to the ‘09 Nationals’ rotation this afternoon. MLB.com says you’ll have to follow along on the box score…XM doesn’t have their weekly schedule up yet…Who’s Following The Washington Nationals This Afternoon?

Looks like the Tigres del Detriot brought the B Squad.
There is certainly more pressure on Martis today. I hope we can stretch him out and get 5 or 6 innings.
A walk in the first, but Martis gets a scoreless 1st...
