Manny (Acta) Watch

A lot of stories have come out the past week and days about Manny maybe getting the Ax soon.  So how does everyone feel about Manny? Time for the Riggleman era?

I like Manny but some of his decisions just have me yelling at the TV periodically.  O and why the F haven't we signed Luis Vizcaino yet, after last night I don't think he can get to DC fast enough.

who knows...

Designated

The Padres designated Eulogio De La Cruz yesterday, he throws mid 90s but has control issues, sounds like the second coming of Jesus Colome, but I wouldn’t mind picking him up just to have another power guy in the pen.

I am not a scout, but I also question Acta's decision making......

Nats’ Acta: How safe?
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9509684/Don%27t-expect-Joba-to-bail-out-Yanks-%27pen-yet

"Mike Rizzo probably will not dump Acta quickly — Rizzo, who was not always with the major-league club in his previous role as assistant GM, needs more time to form a judgment.

Still, the Nats’ fundamental play is dismal, and scouts routinely question Acta’s decision-making."

I dont blame Acta soley...

While I think that some criticisms about Acta are valid (some situational, some motivational, some disclipne), I think Bowden had a lot to answer for (as does Chico Harlan points out in the Post).

1727 words on the bullpen, by Chico Harlan

It wasn’t Acta who had not judged the needs of the bullpen this season and it wasn’t Acta who over sotcked the outfield (and under stocked the middle infield).

That said, the teams defence has actually gotten worse and I do question some of the players attitude (such as a work ehtic on outfield training). The continual use of the Hanrahan as closer is Acta’s fault but also Rizzo who hasn’t done enough to give Acta a better option (remember it was Rizzo AND Acta that encouraged Hanrahan).

I’m not sure Rizzo is best placed to dump Acta given he doesn’t have the job in its own right. I’m in two minds as to whether the team needs a Frank Robinson type or they would be better off with someone positive like Acta. But it’s clear that the blame extends more to one person… I think that these issues are systemic within the club and guys like Rizzo are going to need time to sort it all out.

I liked Acta for his positive attitude in the past. I don't like that he doesn't take a little blame on himself

I find many of his in game decisions perplexing, as well as lineup choices. If I could see his overall team strategy a little more (and I’ve defended him in the past), maybe it would be easier to understand.
It really hit the wall for me when Dukes was late. Acta’s reaction seemed uncharacteristic and harsh, and I wonder if that affected the rest of the team.
“Playing the kids” is going to be a bumpy ride, and Acta is in his first job, too. I just read an article where half the managers are in the hot seat, including the Marlins’ guy, so I guess it’s just an unavoidable reaction.

about time

He was on a 64 error pace for the season. Solid bat for an infielder, but the glove needs serious work.

Some dude on Fan graphs says the general has a very weak arm

and makes throwing errors in an attempt to compensate for that arm. So, perhaps he is the second basemen of the future!

My sentiments exactly

And his noodle arm was very noticeable while Guzman was injured. He gets to a lot of balls, though.

The buck stops with Acta

This team is awful with the glove, can’t bunt well, and the bull pen is pitching scared. He is cutting the wrong guys (Shell not Rivera). I like ACTA, but he needs to go to jump start this team. We are playing worse than we should with our talent level plain and simple. We are bad, but not anywhere near this bad!

I gave up on cintron when he played for the snakes

I drafted him late for my fantasy team his sophomore season. When I take a flier on you and feel cheated, you suck! Wasted a buck on that guy!

Apart from the closer/bullpen

Lets not forget we lost 6 games in the 9th… while I think this could have been managed better – if we win half those games, we’re even having this discussion.

I have no issue with the defence skills – it’s unacceptable at this level and he and the coaches need (what we Aussies term) a good kick in the butt.

Fair dinkum!

Although you spelled “defense” wrong… ;)

The managing decisions may be arguable to an extent—Acta has the roster he has. But the circus in the field? That’s squarely on the coaches. We’ve been hearing for three seasons now that Acta is a teacher, and he’s here he to teach our potential-filled kids to be good ballplayers. TEACH. THE. KIDS. It’s bad enough to be derided as the “NAAAts” because of pitching and hitting—those are the hard parts of the game. Routine fielding and pitchers who can sac bunt are the minimum price of admission to the majors. Ryan Langerhans can catch! (Oh, wait… didn’t come up in the Nats organization…)

I am sensitive about it.

I was teasing Mezza about his Commonwealth-style spelling of "defence."

Just a little good-natured ribbing between two people separated by a common language, as the saying goes. (I believe Mezza is Aussie, or living in Oz—that right?) I wouldn’t presume to correct anyone else’s use of the possessive apostrophe, of course.

I knew what you meant...... I have a spelling flaw in that I use some British spelling...

…due to my English grandmother sending me kids’ books as a child. I tend to use defence and defense interchangeably, but colour means a hue, and color means “hot” in this neighbourhood………

Thanks

I’ll be All But Dissertation in August assuming I pass the comprehensive exams. I am doing some cool research, which I would tell you about, but this is a baseball site and little will actually be published for 2-4 years. Hopefully by then I’ll be teaching within a reasonable drive to NATSTOWN.

I was sad to see Langerhans go

He was fun to watch field. Plus, last season he became a tough out with the .380 onbase%

He's got a point about the D, though--we called him LangerHANDS for a reason!

Langerhans projects as +14 runs in a corner and +9 in CF, just like TAWH. I know, too bad about the bat, but I still remember his grad slam from 2007…

I've been questioning his decisions all year

And I’m done questioning them at this point. If you ask me, it’s time for a change, plain and simple. The coaching staff was brought up at some point in an earlier reply, but who’s responsible for the coaching staff? There are no fundamentals. There’s no accountability. The bullpen is being constantly mis-managed. He just needs to go at this point.

Riggleman has to be considered Manny's Replacement at this point.

but the Lehners held onto Bowden longer than I think most of us expected, so Manny may ride this out. Thanks to the Lehners not being quick to fire managers or GMs.

I don’t even know what influence he’s had on Manny.

Lets just hope Kip Wells comes out of nowhere and saves 30 games this season!
