Barry Zito Is Going To Stare At You Now...

Barry Zito

#75 / Pitcher / San Francisco Giants

May 13, 1978

The Nationals vs Zito...

Ronnie Belliard - 11 for 31, .355 AVG, 1 2B, 1 HR, 6 RBI's.

Adam Dunn - 0 for 8, .000 AVG, 4 K's.

Cristian Guzman - 3 for 26, .115 AVG, 2 BB, 7 K's.

Willie Harris - 3 for 5, .600 AVG, 1 HR, 1 RBI.

Nick Johnson - 3 for 4, .750 AVG, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI.

Austin Kearns - 2 for 11, .182 AVG, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI's.

Ryan Zimmerman - 2 for 8, .250 AVG, 1 3B, 1 BB, 1 K.

Zimmerman On XM...Ryan Zimmerman was on XM's Inside Pitch with Holden Kushner and Jim Duquette this afternoon to talk about his hittin...THE KIDS CALL IT THE STREAK!!! (ed. note - "Paraphrasing here, since i was driving and taking notes whilst listening."):

Any Pressure? Zim - Not really, been fun, never experienced anything like it, just tries not to waste at bats...

Did his new contract help him to relax? Zim - Nice to get it done, wouldn't play any differently if he hadn't. Don't have to worry about contract or arbitration for 5 years, knows family is set for life...

Has it helped a struggling team to have something good going on? Zim - Weird to do something good individually when team is struggling, would trade it all for a few more wins. Nationals have lost 7-8 games late when they were leading, so he doesn't think DC is that far away...

Has Dunn been a good influence? Zim - Yeah, Dunn works hard, having him hitting behind him helps, so does a healthy Nick Johnson...

Any superstitions during streak? Zim - Only thing is cleats and batting gloves, usually changes them every few weeks, hasn't for the last 30 games...

How do you keep hitting if 1st AB? - 14 of 30 hits are in 1st AB - Zim - "I wish I knew"...Just worked out that way, nice to get i done in first AB and relax...

Other notes: Zim compares Zimmermann to LA's Billingsley. Zim notes, that the Nationals are only 30 games in...

What a humble dude. Strasburg is humble like this, too.

It’ll be nice to have those types as our stars, eh…

+1 - Nice, but not necessary to like the players you support!!

I love how low-key and not-full-of-himself he seems to be.

Dunn’s probably a good influence in that respect, too. Earlier in the streak, Chico or someone was interviewing him and asked him about hitting #23 (or something—I forget the exact number) and Zim replied something like, “Huh.. that’s one more than 22.”

Let NY and Boston have their drama. We have nice guys who like to play ball (and are getting better at it, thank heaven!).

Tidbits from the radio pre-game show Minor-league roundup...

…lots of good stuff, including Colome and Bergman being essentially unhittable. Colome could be closing on Saturday! Not that he would be any better than the current composite closer, but it’s a devil we’re used to.
