Possible Trade w/ Sox

The Red Sox are looking for another outfield bat and have been looking at Matt Murton and Ryan Spilborghs of the Rockies.  They don't want to give up any of their young starters (which is fine with me).  But they would be willing to give up Manny Delcarmen who I think could definately close for the Nats and do it effectively.

I would love to examine this trade and give the Sox either Willingham, AK, or maybe even Milledge.  What do you think?

They're (the Sox) are also looking at Nick Johnson according to published reports...

yea i’ve heard that too and I know that they have had interest in the willinghammer in the past.

it is so hard to pull the trigger on a NJ trade b/c I would imagine we would only get Kris Johnson or Dustin Richardson with either Lopez/Cabrera/McBeth/Cherry thrown in

who do we plug at First

if we trade the slick Nick Johnson?

Try to get the Hammer to play 1B? Move Dunn to 1B? I’d rather have Dunn lumbering around in LF to be honest.

If we can get something for Johnson, especially pen help, I say go for it. It just better be a solid young arm.

Agree...but its got to be good talent.

The Sox are smart...

Nick Johnson is the best available 1B, and the Nats will gladly take a couple arms off their hands. The Paw Sox have two or three guys that would make immediate impact.

It is up to Rizzo to get a guy like Masterson, Buckholz, Bowden, or Bard. Delcarmen is OK, but he is B-list compared to those other 4.

I liked the Sox to get Johnson...

Two weeks ago: http://deacondrake.blogspot.com/2009/05/wait-your-poll-says-trade-nick-johnson.html

They are still the best match, even if Theo and crew think they are going to fleece the corpse of Bowden.

by Deacon Drake on May 19, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I just don't see Boston parting with any of those 4 names? Do you? For a guy in Johnson who's earned his oft-injured label?

Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"

Boston are not going to trade Buchholz, Bowden, or Haggadone. I would love Bard but would doubt it.

I’m telling you we would get either Kris Johnson or Dustin Richardson along with another servicable veteran arm from Pawtucket.

But also I think a lot has to with Mike Lowell’s health which would move Youk to 3rd and as everyday goes by NJ’s stock rises and Boston may be more willing to deal either Bard, Delcarmen, Richardson/Johnson (Masterson I would think is out of the question)

Also...

I think the Indians are going to deal DeRosa and LaPorta so they are a wild card in all of this also. The Brew Crew could still deal Prince for some pitching and will need a 1B rental.

Do not trade NJ for anyone!!!

Dunn is an absolutely terrible first basemen. Dimitri is an injury risk.

Doesn't their bullpen stink as much as ours right now?

Do they have any decent pitching prospects in the minors?

Would be bad to trade within the same division...

How much it would hurt to see NJ hammer us week in and out?

If we got a reliever who could strike out the REST of the Mets lineup?

Not that the Mets actually have such a piece to bargain with, of course. The NY fans may want him, but they have nothing we want, I think (we already have Flores, heh).

The Mets committed 5 errors last night, and had the go-ahead in extras erased on appeal when Church missed third base

Actually more than I knew when I wrote it. It was their backup 1B that threw wild to the plate that allowed the winning run.

Maybe we can trade for Tim Redding, who threw 6 innings in his Mets debut…

But, it was more about the Mets also playing with circus music in the air…

Niese, Holt, and Kunz are decent pitching prospects. Wouldn’t mind getting Kunz in the bullpen, he has had control issues but could be pretty good.

Wily Mo is batting .233 w/ 1 HR in Buffalo, haha

It's just a matter of time till "the injury" comes.

Not if, but when…

That’s no jinx either. It’s a scientific fact. Nick gets hurt every year.

by RoscoeNats on May 19, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

which is why he isn't worth anything via trade!!!!!

So do not trade hium in case he stays healthy all year, then trade him next year for alot!!!!

We need a future 1B in the mix, NJ is not the long-term answer. Adam LaRoche is the only true 1B slated to be a free agent next year (he’s not the answer) and there is Victor Martinez who I think is going to give up his catching gig pretty soon. Sucks we didn’t get Tex I think he couldn’t of been the main stay we were looking for, I love the Big Donkey though.

Future 1b = Chris Marerro = right !!! = Darn he's still in HiA not even AA = Oh crap !!!

He’s having a great year will be moved up to AA in a second I’m sure and he starting to get the whole 1st base thangy, people have said…

BTW Johnson is probably gone next year. We’ve got to get something out of him. He’s one of my favs but for three years of non-production we’ve got to get something for that, eh…

Yes Cat daddy I’m a raccoon. Actually I’m a skunk dressed up to be a raccoon…

That's what happened to Guzman...

Bad or hurt for 3 years, then good for half a year, then a 2 year contract.

Maybe it will happen to Nick Nick also.

he would be worth draft picks if we signed him as a free agent

if he stays healthy all year. So we lose by trading him then signing him back!

If he stays healthy and then leaves via free agency then we get draft picks, assuming he keeps his offensive numbers.

Delcarmin for Nick Johnson

With Dmitri coming off the DL soon, we have a real logjam at 1st. I would do Delcarmin for Nick Johnson altho I would like to get a little more (one of Bosox precious minor league pitchers) as a throw-in.

I honestly don’t know what to do with nick, it has to be such a tough decision for rizzo. You hope he can keep up what hes doing and stay healthy, but its such a gamble when you could get something for him right now. I like the guy but I don’t see resigning him and NJ playing 1B for us for the next three years, so I guess I would deal him. Then either go after V-Mart in free agency or trade for Prince since they want to move Braun to 1B or I think the Braves will be looking to deal Kotchman, so could send Willingham there.

Short term: You trade Nick and Dunn is the 1B...

The OF adventure is transferred to the IF. Zim’s throwing yip returns and it affects his bat. Adam’s production drops at that position. The Two-Spot is gone, so we get Guz at #2 and his advantage changes and the new/old lead-off guy (Anderson?) goes back to a .280 OBP…….
Solve a pitching problem and the only good thing going for the Nats, the offence, probably suffers and Nats Park looks like Stade Olympique on a cold September night….

We are all forgetting one huge thing in this trade

and that would be salary relief? Think of what we could get next year and what a burden it would be off our backs if we could trade NJ and his contract, buy out AK for 1 mil, and get rid of D’Meat Hooks contract. it would be HUGE
