Washington Nationals' '07 1st Round Pick Ross Detwiler Learns What It's Like To Be A DC Starter.
HEADLINES:
DC Bullpen Can't Hold Detwiler's Lead...
In spite of having surrendered a 3-run HR to the Pirates' left fielder Craig Monroe in the third, at the end of the fifth inning, DC left-hander Ross Detwiler, in the first start of his major league career, had a W lined up after the Nationals rallied for 5 in the home half of the inning to take a two-run lead at 5-3...a lead which didn't last through the top of the sixth...
Detwiler's Line:
Detwiler, Ross - 5.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 6 K's, 0 BB, 1 HR, 0 WP, 84 pitches, 61 strikes.
The first thing that you notice with Ross Detwiler is that he's actually throwing strikes, the fastball is in the low-90's, but he hides the ball behind his body up until he releases it, and he has a nice change early which he drops off the outside to right-handers, a sinking fastball, and later a few benders, and over 5.0 IP, Detwiler's in trouble just twice. The first time it's Cristian Guzman's fault, as the DC shortstop's two errors put two on with two outs in the first inning, a jam which Detwiler works through, and the second when a single and HBP start the third, and Detwiler's not as lucky...
...Detwiler throws two fastballs around 90 mph on the outside edge to Craig Monroe, and the next pitch comes in at 82, a change that sinks in over the outside of the plate onto Monroe's bat and out to deeeeep center and just over the glove of the leaping Willie Harris, and over the wall for a 3-0 Pirates' lead.
Nothing comes of Jack Wilson's double off Detwiler in the fourth, and Detwiler strikes out his 5th and 6th batters in the 5th before getting a liner from Monroe to fellow DC first rounder Ryan Zimmerman, who closes his glove on the Pirates' fifth and then hits the second of two HR's in the Nationals' half, as Nick Nick Johnson Johnson, and Ryan Zimmer--THE KIDS CALL HIM ZIM!! THE KIDS CALL HIM ZIM!!!... both go deep off Pittsburgh starter Ross Ohlendorf and give Washington a two-run lead at 5-3 after five.
The Nationals turn the lead over to...
The DC Bullpen:
Garrett Mock (L, 0-2) - 0.1 IP, 1 H, 3 runs, 3 ER, 1 BB, 15 pitches, 7 strikes.
Jesus "Everyday" Colome - 0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 20 pitches, 12 strikes.
Kip Wells - 1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 K's, 31 pitches, 16 strikes.
Joe Beimel - 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 3 pitches, 3 strikes.
Joel Hanrahan - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K's, 32 pitches? 17 strikes.
11 Hits and 7 Runs Should...Be...ENOUGH!!!!
Cristian Guzman is hitting .385 after going 2 for 4 with a run scored and a walk. Nick "Two-Spot" Johnson goes 1 for 2 with a HR, 3 RBI's and 3 walks. Ryan Zimmerman 2 for 5 with a run scored, 1 RBI and a .358 AVG...Don't know what's wrong with Dunn recently, 2 for his last 15 heading into tonight, Dunn went 0 for 3 with a sac fly RBI, but he hasn't hit a HR since May 10th when he hit 2 in Arizona...Do you think Dunn just realized he signed with a non-playoff team?
The Nationals have 11 hits, 7 runs, but commit 4 ER's and surrender 12 hits and 12 runs in another loss, the 26th of 35 in fact...

Is there any logical explanation for that? Has to concentrate too hard in right?

Is some of it because there's a LHP, which is why Hammer starts, even though he's terrible against LHP?
I forgot to note the BB/K rates…..
22BB, 20K as a LF
4BB 16K as a RF

Dukes... and Detwiler
http://www.washingtontimes.com/weblogs/chatter/2009/may/19/dukes-kearns-still-out/
“Dukes is working out in right field with strength and conditioning coach John Philbin. Head trainer Lee Kuntz, manager Manny Acta and acting GM Mike Rizzo are all out there watching closely. Perhaps it’s now decision day on Dukes. Either he’s good to go, or he’s DL-bound.”

Time for a change
It’s time for a change. In two and 1/4 seasons, Manny has shown he is a nice guy and that he can talk a good game – great at analyzing what went wrong (never his fault) but the team has failed to show improvement under his leadership. As the youngest major league manager, he shows it. Last night should have been the final straw. At the post game conference, he gave his rationale for pulling Detwiler – he wanted a pinch hitter to keep the rally going – so who does he pick, Cintron with a whopping batting average of .083 – the result was predictable. At least, johnson pulled him from the fire – only to be done in again by his great choice of relievers.
I guess what really gets to me is when he appears to give up on the team – Friday night in the 12th is just one example. Too many times he has run his pitchers into the ground by failing to pull them when he knows they are struggling – I guess it teaches them character. What a lesson!
If I was Scott Boros, I wouldn’t let my number one sign with the Nationals.
by Erickson on May 19, 2009 7:36 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
On any normal team pulling a rookie spot starter after 5 good innings seems reasonable...
…but pulling Rossweiler (for Cintr-O-n) and then having the bullpen immediately blow it does look horrible, but I still think this is more on the pitchers than Acta, and as someone who likes Mock, hhis performance was hard to take…
Please don’t fire Manny, he’ll just go to the Mets…
Not that I disagree with your final line, but I hope Boras doesn’t read that…

I really do think a manager with experience would be better right now. Also, a manager with some cojones. Many of Manny’s decisions over the years are just not good. I think he wants to reinvent the wheel…but t here are reasons teams have been successful over the years with sacrifice bunts, stealing bases, hit and runs, catching the ball, knowing where to throw the ball and accurately delivering it to that location. This team, with better fundamental play, masks some of the pitching woes. We have 30 more errors than the Phillies. Think about that.

I would let my number one sign with the nationals!!! before most other teams
Here is why: Lannan, J Zimmermann, Martis, Baelster, Detwiler all look like legit major league starters given a few years more experience and no arm injuries. I predict 2 to 4 of these guys are consistent 15 game winners in 2010, 2011, or 2012 onwards. So roughly 3 years from now we will likely have the pitching staff of the 90s Braves and they will be together for several dominating years. Add Strassburg to that mix and we will dominate the game in 2012-2014 roughly. maybe as soon as next yeart.
We score 6 runs a game consistently. Ryan Zimmerman is the best all round 3rd baseman in baseball this season, and he will get better for several more years. We have marrero and others in the minors that are very good and coming in a year or two. Jesus Flores is a very good and improving offensive catcher. Our core group of hitters and fielders are solid to above average and improving. That unit will also likely comeinto in own in 2012.
We will draft very high for the next two drafts. So as long as we draft solidly we will be able to draft guys that will be around during Strassburg’s tenure that will make him better.
Our current weakness, the bullpen, is glaringly bad, probably one of the worst in history of the game, but given and off season or two, we can fix it fairly easily through free agency and trades. Building a very good bullpen is much quicker and easier than building a starting staff or a core of good young hitters. Since it is obvious we must improve our pen, we will, and then when Strassburg is in the majors for good in 2012 (you can’t say 2010 or 2011 for sure) we will be a consistent playoff team and likely WS playing team for amny years.

From Zuckerman's article in the Times...
— Washington’s bullpen is a combined 1-13 with a 6.68 ERA.
— The Nats have now lost 10 games this season in which they’ve scored six or more runs, surpassing their total from all of 2008. They’ve lost six games when scoring seven or more runs.
— In their last nine games, the Nats have scored, in order … 8, 7, 7, 6, 6, 5, 5, 6 and 7 runs. Their record over that span is 1-8.

I've been silent long enough. Putting up with all this SUCK with no improvement has come to an end...
Top down changes need to come. Most of these players are not motivated and they are just not paying attention. The whip is not being cracked and it’s time to get an experienced manager in there. This team has too much talent to play this bad. Much of pitching is mental and these pitchers are handled poorly. State of mind is all wrong. Need to be bulldogs.
No more excuses. Time for players to call each other out.

I am so sad for Dmitri, but he’s never going to play in MLB again. He’s making 5 million dollars this year. He just needs to accept that he’s done and stay home with his family.

Wish Harris could leadoff
he has a .397 on base percentage right now, but little else. He has solid speed and base running. he takes more pitches in a week than Guzman in a season. Plus, for his career his best stats have always come from the lead off spot.
But as long as Guz gets 2 singles a game I guess you have to keep him there. But frankly he would make a better #6 than Harris

Chris Schroder added to the Oakland A’s 40-Man today.
Schroder was actually a member of the A’s 40-man roster earlier this spring, but he was cut just before Opening Day to make room for Dan Giese. Schroder cleared waivers and he has been with Triple-A Sacramento all season. He has been the River Cats’ top reliever this season. In 19 innings, he has a 2.37 ERA and three saves with 18 strike-outs and 10 walks. The slider specialist has previous major league experience with the Washington Nationals.
