Craig Stammen To Make MLB Debut...

The story of Craig Stammen's impending MLB debut actually broke in Stammen's hometown paper, the Dayton (OH) Daily News, in an article by Chick Ludwig entitled, "Former UD, Versailles baseball star to make major league debut", several hours before the Washington Nationals made the official announcement.

Stammen, a right-hander who was a 12th Round pick by the Nationals in 2005, who turned 25 in March, made several stops at A-ball in the Nationals' system before jumping from Class-A Potomac to Triple-A Columbus in 2007, and he pitched at every level of the organization but the majors last season, struggling only at Columbus, where he was (1-4) with a 7.33 ERA in 8 starts and 1 relief appearance as a Clipper.

Stammen replaces Daniel Caberera (0-5, 5.95 ERA) in the DC starting rotation, and you'll be forgiven if his name wasn't instantly recognizable to you when it was announced yesterday since, according to "Acting" DC GM Mike Rizzo, as quoted in MLB.com's Bill Ladson's article entitled, "Nationals move Cabrera to bullpen":

"'He's a little bit of a late bloomer," Rizzo said. 'He was a different pitcher last year. He was a power pitcher with a four-seam fastball that was pretty straight.'"

Stammen In Syracuse - (4-2), 1.80 ERA, 7 GS, 40.0 IP, 33 H, 10 R, 8 ER, 4 HR, 8 BB, 14 K's, .223 BAA.

Stammen's Syracuse Splits:

vs Left - 2.37 ERA, 19.0 IP, 13 H, 5 ER, 3 HR, 2 BB, 7 K's, .188 BAA.

vs Right - 1.29 ERA, 21.0 IP, 20 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 6 BB, 7 K's, .253 BAA.

Night Games - (2-1) 4 GS, 23.0 IP, 20 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 4 HR, 4 BB, 9 K's, .227 BAA

Going to a Mandatory Fun Social Event with Mrs. Doghouse tonight (friend’s kid’s 1st birthday… mercifully, they’re waiting until after the kid falls asleep and having a dinner party…) but we’re going to see if we can sneak off and watch the game on the tv in the kitchen with another Nats fan we know who’ll be there. If only Mobile Commenting worked! Represent, Nats fan! Stop the sweep!

STAM-MEN! STAM-MEN! STAM-MEN!!

Not expecting to see a lot of what just happened

At least based on his numbers in Syracuse. 14 strikeouts in 40 innings, and he just fanned a pretty good contact guy in Sanchez.

I discussed that with a fellow blogger last weekend who thought a lot more of those hit balls would be hits in the majors...

You would think that will be the case

Then again, there are more than a handful of big leaguers who have thrived despite not having big strikeout numbers. As Roscoe says below, he’s going to have to keep the ball down. IIRC he has a pretty nice groundball rate.

by bluelineswinger on May 21, 2009 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

The ground ball rate is why Rizzo likes guys, and why Bergmann is one of the last to be strapped to the prow of the boat...

Catcher Jesus Flores, on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder contusion, will take the first step toward his return at the end of the weekend, when he heads down to Washington’s spring training facility in Viera, Fla. Flores, who has not played since May 9, could resume swinging by Monday.

Great slider! Throws strikes! Gets ahead in the count.

Now let’s see how he does the second time around the Pirates order. This will give a real clue as to if he is the real deal!

Things turned a bit interesting in Crow’s final inning when he hit Carlos Arroyo with a pitch. Arroyo didn’t take the plunking sportingly and threw a bat toward Crow. Cats catcher Kelley Gulledge immediately stepped in front of Arroyo as both teams wound up on the field. No punches were thrown.

Truth be told, this is just one start

He’s obviously been red hot in Syracuse all year, though. Won’t lie and say I’m not loving this start. Certainly think that he’s earning himself an opportunity to stick around, but six innings are six innings. Reminds me a bit of a right-handed Lannan who pounds the zone just a bit more so far.

by bluelineswinger on May 21, 2009 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

And yes..... I'd much rather see him than Cabrera

That’s not saying a lot. It’ll be interesting to see how both he and Detwiler are pitching when Olsen’s back healthy. I’d assume that they send Detwiler back to the minors for more seasoning unless he’s pitching lights out.

by bluelineswinger on May 21, 2009 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

It's always possible

I know there are some who disagree with me, but I just don’t think Cabrera is ever going to be a useful big league pitcher again. The dropoff in velocity is alarming, and it was really the only serious strength he’s ever had. I know the season’s only 7 weeks in, but Cabrera has been nearly this bad for each of the past two years. Seven starts is a small sample size. Two years isn’t.

Did everyone catch the Wall Street Journal issue on Weds., 20 May, entitled, “The World’s Most Excruciating baseball Team” to root for.

Based upon the following criteria: Winning percentage; Average Length of Game; Relievers per game; Pitches per PA; and Years since last title. OK, if you didn’t see it , here’s the top five winners, or is it the bottom five losers?

5. Cubs 4. Mets 3. Colorado; 2. Cleveland. And the winner is….. or the loser is…

Guess what? The Washington Nationals win in a landside. I mention this just in case you were feeling kinda guilty when writing at this thread.

Great game, Nats fans!

Only caught a plays from my friend’s kitchen—Zimmy chasing down the fly ball in the stands, Elvis’ sac fly, Stammenation getting a few outs… Mrs. D had a whole string of curses ready for Hanrahan by the time we got to the car to listen to the game recap on the radio, when—WTH? We WON? LET’S GO NATS GO!
