Next inning, Guzzy sacs in a run and Kearns doubles in NJ and Zim. 6-4. Then the Nats turn it on… with 6 runs in the top of the 8th. BAM, it’s 10-6! In 7.0 IP against Washington, in one start and one relief appearance, 24-year-old D'Backs' starter Yusmeiro Petit has surrendered 12 hits and 5 runs to the Nationals, and he's (1-0) with 3 K's a 6.43 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and .414 BAA DC. (0-2) so far in '09, Petit has given up 27 hits and 20 runs, 18 earned in 20.2 IP, and Arizona has lost each game of the six games he's appeared in...

When tonight's starter, Shairon Martis was added to the Nationals' starting rotation back in late March, "Acting" DC GM Mike Rizzo heaped praise upon the Nationals' 22-year-old right-hander in describing to Washington Post writer Chico Harlan in an article entitled, "Martis, Zimmermann make Nats' rotation", why he thought the 6'1'', 175 lb native of Willemstad, Curacao wasn't more highly-regarded as a prospect:
"He doesn't knock your eyes out with the radar gun," Rizzo said. "He's a sinker-slider pitcher. He's a command guy. And he's a poise guy beyond his years. And he's a 22-year-old pitcher that doesn't throw 95 mph. He gets you out by commanding four quadrants of the plate with three pitches, and those aren't the guys who really are the sexy type of prospect. So I think that's the reason why he was under the radar.
Rizzo's predecessor in the GM's role, The Former DC GM Jim Bowden told MLB.com's Bill Ladson, (back on July 28th, 2006 when Martis was acquired from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for veteran left-hander Mike Stanton), that the Nationals were excited about adding the then-19-year-old prospect to the Nationals' system:
"We like Martis a lot. ... We like his arm," Bowden said. "He throws 91-95 miles per hour. We like his delivery. He is only 19 years old. He has a high ceiling. Certainly, it's down the road. It's a building for the future."
Does that mean the future is now? The Nationals acquired Martis just four days after they signed former Arizona Diamondbacks' Scouting Director Mike Rizzo as their own Assistant GM back in July of '06, so there's no telling if Mr. Rizzo's pointing to his head about this one.

MLB.com's Bill Ladson quoted an unnamed source within the Nationals' organization in a recent article entitled, "Strasburg sits atop Nats' Draft board", who said that, "He(Strasburg) is our top choice right now..." barring any unforseen obstacles, and the same source said that they expected, "...negotiations between the Nationals and Strasburg's advisor, Scott Boras to go down to the wire."
Washington Post writer Chico Harlan reported Wednesday night that the Nationals' "Acting" GM Mike Rizzo and Scott "Maximum" Boras were spotted sitting together in Boras' seats at Dodger Stadium...Wonder what they were talking about?

It's an Italian cookie that you make in a pizzelle iron ...
You drop a couple of spoons of batter onto the hot iron and hold it over an open flame (gas) or on the eye (electric) and flip over several times until the cookie is done.
Then you peel it off the iron quickly and try not to burn yourself because the iron is super hot. They’re very crispy and have all the wonderful markings from the iron — sort of like a tiny waffle iron.
