Another Team Joins the Dunn/Johnson Sweepstakes

Carlos Guillen went down for the Tigers and is probably out for the year. So the Tigers owner came out today that he wants to win the division and will keep spending money.

The Tigers averaged 11,000 more fans per game last year, but their owner is prepared to add payroll to keep his team in first place, according to Drew Sharp of the Detroit Free Press. Tigers owner Mike Ilitch told GM Dave Dombrowski to do whatever it takes to improve the team, even if it means adding salary

"What are we going to do? There are a lot of things we can do," Ilitch said. "We're going to try to improve one way or the other."

A lot of people are talking about Dunn/Johnson being the answer to the Tiger's injury woes, I wonder who we could get from them? prospects? Galaragga?

Hey…I guarantee the Tigers have some nice prospects…a well-run team with a good run of successful player development. Wouldn’t mind raiding the Giants too.

“Slugger” Stat: David Ortiz makes $13M this season. Dunn makes $8M this year and $12M next year. And personally, I’d like to see Dunn get a chance to go to the playoffs. Thome makes $13M. Travis Haffner $11.5M. Jose Guillen (just for laughs) $12M. Vlad $15M. Scott Rolen $11.6M (Is Rolen old yet?).

Anyway, Dunn’s at a good price.

The Tigers system is

actually a bit thin. They stripped it the last couple of years and are only slowly rebuilding it right now. The Giants, on the other hand, have some solid chips, but I’m not sold Sabean is willing to deal his top guys.

the tigers gave up their pitching prospects for

dontrelle and miguel cabrera. Andrew miller and I think one of the other marlins current starters.

sorta

The package was Maybin/Andrew Miller/Mike Rabelo/Dallas Trahern/Eulogio de la Cruz/Burke Badenhop. Badenhop has started a game for the Fish, but last I checked, he wasn’t a starter as of now. Cruz was DFA’d and picked up by the Padres last I checked. Trahern is a middling arm in AAA for them.

The Tigers gave the Braves Jair Jurrjens (and Gorkys Hernandez) for Edgar Renteria. Really tore up their system with those two moves, giving up 4 fairly highly rated guys in those 2 deals.
