Yes, they have a $200 million payroll
But Gardner accounts for about $400,000 of it. Also, having the balls to pull your $20+ million slugger for a pinch runner there, though that certainly made baseball sense as he was the tying run in the ninth.

Odds are that the Nats would still win with Gardner on 2nd; moving him to 3rd was huge and most managers didn’t have the guts to do that.
