Shairon Martis Sent To Syracuse...
In order to make room on the roster for DC lefty Scott Olsen's return to the rotation tomorrow, the Nationals, after weeks of speculation that either Craig Stammen or Ross Detwiler would be sent out, have opted to send Shairon Martis to the Syracuse Chiefs instead.
ESPN.com's got an AP article, linked HERE and in the title above, which quotes DC Manager Manny Acta explaining:
"'We do see him as a very valuable pitcher not only for now, but for many years to come,' Washington manager Manny Acta said. 'He's a big part of our future. He's going to be back here very soon.'"
Here's MASNSports.com's Phil Wood's take on the Martis move.

I wonder how Martis found out? No plane ticket to Florida? Laundry guy ripping his name off his jersey?
“A sullen Martis, after learning the news of his demotion, declined
comment.”
"…when a small group of reporters informed him,… Stammen said.
“That’s the first time I’ve heard of it. I really don’t know what’s going on.”
Nice communication protocol again…….
Who reversed the decision? Stammen was in the ’pen and supposedly warmed up.

Martis did a pretty big about-face. This'll be good for him.
I bet Stammen throws like Cy Young himself on Tuesday night.

Im surprised he wasn't just left at the hotel
Clippard style. This really is a bit of juice shop.

Well he hasn't thrown all that well this season
Barring the complete game. He just got lucky on the wins. Had favorable matchups.
I am not sure why, but I really see him as a setup man or closer someday. My gut tells me he will be a real good one! The makeup seems there to me.

What do you think about Mock as a starter? He went six again today and gave up one earned run.

It's been in his stats...
…Martis has done much better than he’s had any right to. He doesn’t get a lot strikeouts, he walks a lot of people, and he’s a flyballer. Be thankful for his good outings thusfar, and hope he refines his craft in Syracuse. I’m glad I don’t have to watch my “Martis collapses in the second half” prediction come true now.

That might be the saving grace, as well as the usual trend of batters figuring out a pitcher......
Poor Rosswiler draws Josh Johnson, so he’ll have to do it all himself…..

Thinking more about it, this is a sign of how weak the rotation is this season...
…sure, it’s promising. But how many of you would have been surprised if Stammen or Detwiler went back to AAA instead? Out of five current starters, we probably see two as legit big league starters—Lannan, who succeeds despite his (mostly) average peripherals, and Zimmermann, who struggles in spite of his (mostly) excellent peripherals…

No buzzkills tonight...we may have Strasburg in our system by mid-August.

Always thought it was a bit tenuous
But i think we all saw enough promise there to think that these guys might work out. When u think Lannan and Zim are top of the rotation guys, leaves 3 spots… Olsen really should be there if he plays to form. I think Detwiler has certainly got potential to break into the rotation. Stammen as well. Mock is hell bent on coming back. JD Martin (who ive never heard of) is pitching well. Bally as well. I guess I saw it as a work in progress this season. It’s weak but for some reason I think its got potential to turn all around very quickly.

On a normal team, all but Lannan would still be in the minors. It's amazing they haven't been blown out more often.
And with a better defense, they don’t use up all their pitches in 5 innings…..Interchange these guys with alleged better pitchers on other teams and the stats probably change, as well…

It's a wonder they haven't come up with designated runners and designated fielders.....
Then really old fat guys can play and every team gets a slick fielding CF who doesn’t have to hit.

Donkey already misses the DH.
I hope he makes the playoffs with whatever team he ends up on.

And until then, back to the Outfield Carousel of Misfits.....
(just saw the highlight segment of “Hammer and the Invisible Homer”….. did he duck at the shadow of the ball?)

That was seriously the funnist and worst moment of the year
I am haunted by the image of Hammer waving his arms to startled teammates asking where the ball is… when 1,000 fans behind him all move for the catch.
Im so glad it was a home run. Had it dropped in, I would have been an Atlanta Braves fan.
