Manny Acta: (From Blogger News Conference)

Lead quote for Trade Story…

“We just don’t have the guys with that blazing speed…If you bring me Jose Reyes and Hanley Ramirez and Willy Taveras and, uh, Nyjer Morgan in Pittsburgh, I’ll run you out of the ballpark.”

Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

by Ed Chigliak on Jun 30, 2009 6:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

ESS EEE CEE SPEEEEEEEEEED

All that speed doesn’t mean anything when you steal at a rate that’s not good enough to justify it. For an example, see Morgan’s career 65% success rate. I mean, it’s close to what you need to be successful, but still short (IIRC it’s around 68%).

For comparison’s sake:
Jose Reyes: 80%
Hanley Ramirez: 76%
Willy Tavares: 82%

That's actually how the ? was framed by Steven from FJB...

He quoted Acta saying it wasn’t worth it if you weren’t better than 70% if I remember correctly…

Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

I didn't think I'd be the only one who thought that.

It’s more than a little surprising to see Manny with that quote; for all his shortcomings I’ve always thought he knew percentages. Oh well, it may just be a momentary thing.

Only real plus I can see out of the trade

Is that it’s the exact opposite of what Bowden would have done. Honestly, how much time does everyone see Morgan getting? It’s obvious that there are gonna be more moves on the way, but who does Morgan push to the bench more often? Definitely not Dunn. Willingham? Dukes? TAWH? They dealt the potential (and the headache) of Milledge for someone who probably fits in as a fourth/platoon outfielder.

by bluelineswinger on Jun 30, 2009 7:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Morgan's going to be starting in center and batting first, Dunn in left, Dukes/Hammer in right...and Kearns???

I'd guess Willie Harris.

That being said, this move reeks of Bodes-type thought (toolsy, speedy OF who wilts under any kind of examination beyond cursory).

by Graysnail on Jun 30, 2009 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd be inclined to agree that it will be Willie

Just odd timing, as they’d finally found someone working out in center. Still, I think Morgan’s not much more than a platoon guy.

by bluelineswinger on Jun 30, 2009 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree.

I think that Kearns will be DFA’d. And Willie might be the utility man if/when he stops playing well. Morgan might either start on the bench or in CF. TAWH can then give the corner boys a day off.

I think they might have weighed up the fact they can get the same Kearns-like production from Morgan and have someone that might steal a base or two and play good CF defense.

Rizzo on the pregame...

Debbi, Ray and Johnny asked him questions live. He said a move will be made tomorrow and without thinking about it said somebody “will be sent to the minors.”

Would they dare send the General or Elvis to Syracuse and make TAWH a backup infielder?

Just writing too much into the language I’m sure.

Willie's been providing that, though, and while his bat will cool off....

I see no reason he wouldn’t continue to provide an exceptional glove in center. If Hernandez weren’t holding his own, I’d say Willie could see more time at second, too.

by bluelineswinger on Jun 30, 2009 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Morgan may well just come off the bench.

It really is Willie’s job to lose these days as he’s doing a great job. But i still think Kearns will be the one to go. Dukes maybe – he hasnt played well, but they might try to keep working on him.

Or they may opt for: Dunn, Morgan, TAWH… therefore, having one sucky defensive outfielder.

"Baseball is like church. Many attend; few understand."

Rizzo on Morgan:

from Nationals Journal...

“Morgan will bat leadoff and play centerfield. “He’s a high-energy speed type of guy,” Rizzo said, “very plus-plus defensive capability. We see him as an everyday centerfielder for us hitting somewhere at the top of the lineup. It gives us the defensive centerfielder that we’ve been missing here. His attitude, make-up and high energy level are really party of his package as a player.”

I think I'm more concerned that they went out and got another outfielder than anything else

So many holes on the team, but one of the few areas where they have a ton of options is in the outfield. The rest of what happens before the deadline will determine whether the Nats got fleeced here as much as whether Milledge can turn things around/stop being a clubhouse cancer.

by bluelineswinger on Jun 30, 2009 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea but they only really have one decent CF

and thats Harris… really… we dont have too many that can play CF with any conviction. I take the point – we grow em on trees. But not CFs

"Baseball is like church. Many attend; few understand."

by Mezza on Jun 30, 2009 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bingo.

This team has 4 LF/RF types, and maybe .5 CF types before the Morgan trade. (Dunn and Willingham both qualify as .5 fielders.)

Yea im not really against the trade

He’s a decent cheap CF who might tie us over until we draft one or buy one for the future. Stop gap at best but he might do ok.

If it means I dont have to watch Hanrahan blow saves for us…im all for this trade.

Point taken

-5.1 so far on the year. while Morgan’s a +14.3

by bluelineswinger on Jun 30, 2009 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I mean, it's small sample size at this point.

But my eyes also tell me that Willie Harris looks like a good fielder in part because he’s playing with Willingham and Dunn. Kearns looks way more comfortable in the field (and, to an extent, Dukes) compared to Willie Harris.

by Graysnail on Jun 30, 2009 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Though I forgot the caveat that Morgan's +14.3

Has pretty much come in left field, not center. Still, +11.9 in center for his career.
