I think I see Lasto holding up a finger on his way out...and it's not the injured one...

So long Thrilledge!!!

Time to start stealing some bases!!!

I've got to pull a Manny quote from the interview I participated in with him, but Morgan's name was mentioned...

To paraphrase, “Give me Morgan and we’ll run.”

A real centerfielder and a ok bullpen guy for Lasting thrilledge and a not so ok bullpen guy...

Sounds good to me. I do hope that both Lasting and especially Joel find there way…

Morgan's a LF, but that's never stopped the Nats.... +1 on the good luck to Lasto and Joel...

Interesting

Another left fielder who has a reasonable expectation of starting. I wonder if this is the prelude to another move.

The stats aren't from a large sample, BUT...

Based on about 400 innings in CF and 700 innings in LF, he’s got an UZR/150 of +35 in CF, +22 in LF. Arm looks average at best, but he’s got crazy range. That’s +2 to +3 wins above average from defense. By comparison, TAWH’s career UZR/150 is league-average in CF, +20 in LF.

I'd probably say "knowable" more than "better"

They/we know what Morgan will give the team, whereas Milledge and Hanrahan were still mysteries to a large extent. It was also increasingly clear that Milledge didn’t have a future role with the team, and while Morgan may not either, they’ll at least be willing to play him.

+1

We’ve traded two “upside” guys for a pair of known mediocrities. Over on the SBN Pirates blog, they’re mostly dancing in the street, pointing out Hanny’s excellent peripherals and Milledge’s “potential.” Of course, Hanny’s terrible record this season and Lasto’s bad attitude have to outweigh that for us—we’re selling at the bottom of our market, and buying at the top of theirs, probably. However, it’s a cinch that neither was going to accomplish much here this season. We’ve plenty of OFers moving forward, and we’re going to rebuild the bullpen anyway… After a few minutes of thinking, I’m not that worked up about the trade one way or the other. It might help us a little this season, probably a wash longer term.

Do you think the Pirates did this so Lastings and McCutchen could braid each others hair?

Hair humor aside I'd watch that young outfield.

What a terrible trade

WHy not wait and build up Milledge’s value in AAA after coming back from injury? Also, there is the chance Morgan is just like Dukes and Milledge, a guy that projects to play CF and then sucks when he gets to do it? I disconcur strongly with selling so low on Milledge, specially after just coming back from injury. terrible. Jim Bowden lives through Mike Rizzo.

by cubodepollo on Jun 30, 2009 4:43 PM EDT reply actions

Get it the four year test.

Do you see any of the four players playing on our team four years from now? I don’t. I think hanrahan is the closest. Milledge will never get over himself. Hanny’s gone mental. Morgan is trade bait for the real CF to come and the other guys errr umm oh yea Burnett he’s better than scotch-googles that’s nice…but may or may not be good enough. I will miss Hanny, but not the balls that go out of the park from his hand….. I’m not happy or sad for this trade. It’s a trade. Have a day !!! :-I

by Berndaddy on Jun 30, 2009 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

My 2 cents

I think this trade helped both the Buco’s and us. Millage will never be a good CF, but he may be a solid LF He has more bat than Nijer. So he couldn’t help us but might improve the Pirates. Hanny is all potential with no payoff so far, but he could turn into a farnsworth type reliever if he is given plenty of chance to relax and pitch (which he could nopt do here). He needs allot of low pressure innings to learn his craft. Pitsburg might be able to let that happen. So we gained just by getting rid of them. Now Burnett is the better part of this deal for us. He is a legit reliever as good or better than anyone we have now, so the swap for hanny helps a ton. Morgen is a fast guy who can play a decent CF, but he can’t hit homers or lefthanders at all. So he has to be in a platoon to be useful. I suppose maxwell could be the other part of that position.

Good idea on the Maxwell/Morgan platoon........ maybe that's an answer...

Must move the DHs…

That would mean 2 players off the current 25-man though? Kearns and ???

No Hammer?

I think we wont have trouble moving Hammer or Dunn to be honest… they are decent bats and any AL team that has the need surely might try and pick them up. It’s really about what we get back in return.

I have to say, i’ll be keen to see what we might get back on a deal involving Dunn. You have to think the Big Donkey is worth something.

Here is another thought. With the speculation on Dukes…is it possible that Dukes, Dunn and Hammer all get moved? Kearns to be DFA’d… all of sudden its Outfield v2.0

The Reds are rumored to be looking at the Hammer.

I hope they’re not still mad about the Majewski thing. All the players from both teams are gone (assuming Kearns gets the boot).

More importantly, Trader Jim is gone...

Not a bad start for trading.

Personally the Hanrahan and Milledge for Morgan and Burnett is a very good start when it comes to making trades. Morgan has far out performed Milledge this season and give us someone who might actually steal some bases, and Burnett has been very good for the Pirates, far better then Hanrahan has been for us. If we can get rid of Kearns somehow, and at the end of this season drop Youngs hefty salary, I do believe we have the makings of something close to what the Tampa Rays did, when they stuck with their young guys through the bad times, only to be rewarded now with a team that will probably be in contention for many years to come, in a very tough division.
