Elijah Dukes To Replace Lastings Milledge As Disgruntled Syracuse Outfielder.
According to Washington Post writer Chico Harlan's Nationals Journal post entitled, "Dukes Optioned To Class AAA", the roster move all of DC was waiting for was made this morning, and it's Elijah Dukes who's sent out to make room on the roster for the Nationals' new center fielder Nyjer Morgan, who is supposed to start in center field and hit at the top of the order when Washington adds him to the roster this morning. The Nationals take the field less than an hour from now in the finale of the three game series with the Florida Marlins.
?'s For The DC Faithful...
• Is This The Last We See Of Elijah Dukes In DC?
• Are You Surprised To See Elijah Go?
• Please Tell Me This Means Hammer In Right And Not Kearns? Please?
• Is Dukes The Next One To Go From DC To Syracuse To (Insert Destination)???

With a team as bad as the Nationals, I really don’t think there are any bad moves (other than moves that are obviously stupid). Something needs to change, and I’m glad the Nationals’ management is starting to realize this. Dukes has had a bad season so far, so I think he could use the time down there, but I think he’ll be back.

There’s bad moves and stupid moves ….. MLB makes both just by letting the Nats set foot on a field.

Dukes is gone for sure. Kearns should be DFA, but wow The Nats have a new Sheriff, eh. We’ll look back at the history of the Nats and call this week Taking out the Trash week. I’m cool with it…

We’ll agree to disagree. It’s not a suggested time. It’s not like everybody else got on the field at 9:59. People arrive early. If you respect the game and your fellow players, you’ll get your butt to the field. Belliard and Milly have been benched for the same offense in the past.

My answer to Berndaddy was merely that he didn’t roll in while the Marlins were warming up or something.

Dukes doesn’t deserve this. I sincerely hope that Dukes gets traded to an organization that will support him and give him a real opportunity in the majors to start everyday in RF.

Dukes is getting what he deserves. People that act like him in more important jobs (& make much less money) don’t last long. Why should he be treated any differently? Just because he makes millions of dollars? Pffft spoiled baby brats!!!

I hope he doesn't get traded, and I'm kinda sick of all the gossipy crap about his "presence" without being specific.
I read it as he’s an intense guy who cares, and if he makes a bunch of wimpy losers or class clowns “uncomfortable”, then that’s their problem and they should be shown the door if they don’t play better.

dukes is a RF
and has been trying to learn CF on the fly. Unfortunately, with the addition of morgan there are plenty of defensively adequate outfielders and Dukes offense has just been missing the last few weeks. But he does lead the league in Outfield assists, which is something considering missed time. He’ll be back for sure. Once NJ or Dunn is out, the Nats will get folks realigned to what makes the most since defensively.
by VA SLIM on Jul 1, 2009 7:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Exactly, he was asked to play out of position, which likely affected his hitting. Willingham refused to do the same until recently.
Watching Hammer take your job and cost runs can’t feel good, especially considering the assists and runners held because of his arm.
And how many starts did Kearns get while hitting nothing for two years… They’re all slumping at the plate.
I’m almost glad I don’t get TV as seeing Dunn field singles like a hole on a putting green would drive me crazy.

From all reports
The FO have cooled on Dukes and he’s well and truely on the trading block. His performances have dropped off and I think Rizzo is clearing out the projects for guys who are more consistent.

Yes, the FO is cooling on anyone I have an interest in watching. Their past evaluations have worked out so well.
Dave sums it up well…….
http://natsnewsnetwork.blogspot.com/2009/07/other-shoe-fallsdukes-to-minors-plan-tm.html
“Regardless, The Planâ„¢ is dead. With Dukes sent down and Milledge sent away, it leaves the Nationals with exactly one position player on the current 25-man roster younger than 26…
The Nats are no longer in a re-building phase, they are at the beginning of another tear-down phase."
I read on another blog about where were all these FO types including Rizzo up until 3 months ago? Sitting silently while Jimbo singlehandedly put this team together? Or, are they now just covering up their mistaken advice? And anonymously leaking these “reports”……
5 years to get to this place in time…… or 3 years…. or last year, whatever…

I disagree
When was The Plan based soley on Milledge and Dukes? The Plan, certainly as I understood it was to restock the minors with talent from the draft, particularly with young arms. When you look at the rotation, we see some potential young starts who are capable at performing at a excellent level for many, many seasons. We’ve got other pitchers in the minors who are very talented.
Milledge and Dukes were these high upside projects who, frankly, haven’t worked out. Dukes has at least been able to keep himself out of jail. I dont care if they have athletic ability, from all accounts, they are negatives on a team. More importantly, they suck… what are the positives from keeping a player with a .198 batting average on the team? More so when he annoys the crap out of everyone around him? As much as id like to punch Kearns in the back of the head… at least his teammates dont hate his guts.
Sure, we’re not getting younger by moving these guys – but we’ve got to get young guys who are both talented and have a decent mental approach to the game. Guys like Morgan are stop gaps until this happens or tradeable to get prospects. Its what we do with Dunn, NJ, and Guz which might make a difference – even thou they might be hard to move $$ wise.
I think I’ll sum up this comment from Kevin from the link below.
the stat geeks can talk all they want about milledge’s upside, but there is no baseball stat for bats**t crazy! bad move by the bucs to sign this diva.

True, stocking the minors with young arms was an important component and I'll give you that it's working.
And they were stuck with the contracts to some of the players that are mercifully coming off the books this year.
It’s just tiresome to hear the salesman spiel for a season or two, and when that doesn’t work, hear a different salesman spiel and on and on…

Yea I know...
I just think its going to take time and its probably frustrating for fans to watch horrific games like this last series (its frustrating for Zimmerman…so its probably frustrating for all concerned). I do believe that Strasburg pending…we are one or two pitchers away from having a very competitive starting 5…something we havent seen in DC for well…ever. They are all really young guys.
I think this season has to be the season of opportunity for Rizzo. We’ve got to get better and get rid of the cancers from the team. Then we can bring up some of the guys… I guess the thing is…its only been half a season without Bowen… its probably going to take this season to get rid of most of his bad work which are the high upside project guys which should free up a considerable amount of payroll (just add Kearns, Young and maye Guz together and even thats enough to buy a few decent players).
If we havent made a decent trade by July with prospects…im for storming the Bastille.

I would just like to be on the buying side of the trade table that the Expos used to be the victims of.
Drafting and developing pitchers is the way to go, but I want to trade and sign other teams’ MLB players, not prospects. I want their Andre Dawson and Tim Raines……. And when Zimm turns into Pedro, I want a contract extension and not give him to the Red Sox……
This recent trade would have been great if Morgan was Marquis Grissom, and not a left-handed Corey Patterson, as he’s been described.
It’s not that much to ask, is it?

Not really
I hear ya.
I think it could happen. I think the Tex-near-signing was a decent effort to bring quality although we all know that it would have been nice if they had done a better job on the bullpen over the winter. I even think Dunn, for all his donkeyness has been a good signing…he’s had an impact on offense but essentially he’s a bit of a fish out of water in the NL…but he’s played to what was advertised (so there can be no complaints we got hosed).
But Milledge and Dukes represent an era that was doomed to fail. We were basically trading for other teams rejects, hoping they’d come good. it really is about second guessing teams like the Rays and Mets and saying “we can do this better than you”. It rarely works (and is even harder to predict)… Id much rather get someones bonafide prospect in a trade. That’s kind of why I dont mind a trade with Dunn, NJ, Guz, etc… those guys might get us decent talent. We’ve really got to cash those guys in.

Dunn is as advertised, and I could tolerate him more if he came through to win a game or two a week.
As advertised, his lack of defence costs as much or more. At this point, even prospects would be acceptable for those you list, although that is dismantling and starting over.
And who was it that recommended Lasto to Bowden?……..

Washington has been keeping tabs of Dukes for most of the offseason. He was playing in the Dominican Winter League for the Licey Tigers under Nationals third-base coach Tim Tolman, who gave the Nats’ front office nothing but glowing reports.

“A whirlwind,” is what Burnett called the hours between getting traded and arriving in South Florida. (mere minutes before the start of the series finale against the Marlins).
Acta said he’d get Burnett in Wednesday’s game at some point.
Before that, Burnett said he’d probably be nervous in his first game with the Nationals.

News: From The Sports Xchange: 1B Dmitri Young, sidelined all season due to a strained back and hip, moved his rehab to Double-A Harrisburg on Tuesday. He went 0-for-3. Young had gone 1-for-6 in three games for the Nationals’ rookie-level affiliate in the Gulf Coast League.
