The Washington Nationals Have Nothing, Cubs Win 3-1 For Chicago's Second Straight In DC.

It's hard to win a game when the only run you score is forced in by the opposing pitcher. Carlos Zambrano was wild in the first and out by the fifth inning of tonight's Nationals Park start, having thrown 113 pitches, 64 for strikes with 4 walks, 6 K's and 4 hits allowed, and the one unearned run the result of a two-out error by Chicago shortstop Ryan Theriot which loads the bases for Willie Harris, who takes a 3-1 fastball low and outside to score Nick Johnson from third. Washington's rookie right-hander Craig Stammen received no support from the punchless Nationals, as he gave up just 6 hits and 3 ER's over 6.0 innings on the mound in which he threw 96 pitches, 59 strikes and induced 11 groundouts with his sinking fastball. 3 of the Nationals' six hits are by Nyjer Morgan. Nick Johnson's two-out double to right in the seventh is DC's only extra base hit, and nothing comes of it...Cubs win the second of four in the nation's capital...oh, and Carlos Zambrano knocks in two of the three Cubs' runs...

Cubs win, 3-1 final.

BACKPAGE:

• E:85, K:104.

E: 85 - Alberto Gonzalez, who got the start when Cristian Guzman was scratched, committed his 8th error of the season, and the Nationals' league-leading 85th in the top of the first on a routine grounder to short off Ryan Theriot's bat, which followed Kosuke Fukudome's leadoff double and had DC righty Craig Stammen in trouble early. Stammen responded by striking Derrek Lee, who K'd looking, and drawing a DP grounder out of Aramis Ramirez to make sure not even unearned runs would cross in the first.

K:104 - Was recorded in the fifth when Adam Dunn fouled a two-strike change into Cubs' catcher Koyie Hill's mitt. Dunn's 104th K is...uh...well it's just about right for his career splits, and according to baseball-reference.com's 162-Game Average, the DC Faithful can expect about 76 more of the same before the season's over...but also 17 more HR's...

• How To Not Score Runs...

First and second with one out in the first after Nyjer Morgan singles and Nick Johnson walks. Ryan Zimmerman K's swinging and Nyjer Morgan's gunned trying for third by Cubs' catcher Koyie Hill. An intentional walk, an error and a bases loaded base on balls score a run, but Josh Bard's two-out groundout ends the first and the threat...Alberto Gonzalez singles in the second, but Craig Stammen's bunt is too hard and Carlos Zambrano takes out the lead runner at second base. Nyjer Morgan's single puts Stammen in scoring position, but Nick Johnson grounds out and Zimmerman K's, again...The Nationals manage just two hits after the second, a two-out single by Nyjer Morgan in the fourth and a two-out double by Nick Johnson in the seventh, as 4 Cubs' relievers throw four scoreless to get Zambrano the win.

I was watching, but MLB.tv's huge delay (almost two batters behind) kills the ability to contribute to the gamethread

The “double steal” was actually a smart play. You have Mr. GIDP at the plate. But, Morgan hesitates and looks in as for a normal hit and run. Nick is closer to second than Morgan is to third, and if running as for a straight steal, he probably beats it anyway. Morgan should be looking at Listach for a signal to go back if it’s a flyball.
I can’t blame Riggleman here, given the recent two true outcomes for Zim. The only thing worse would have been a LITP…….

+1 on the hit 'n run

I cringed at the K-CS, at frist, but I agree it was the right idea.

-1 for the MLB.tv delay, although it’s much better if you’re not doing HD. Having the DVR ability or whatever is what seems to add the delay.

I watched the replay several times, and Morgan just doesn't take off like he should.

I know the instinct is to look in for the hit and run, rather than the straight steal, but in this instance, you’re committed. Ironically, it’s what he did with the steal of second on the pickoff…….

I’ll try turning off the HD. The whole experience of watching a game rather than following on Gameday/Gamecenter is weird anyway after all these years. It’s only good for another week in any case…

Riggles...

…said Zambrano was good about keeping Nyjer close and off balance and that’s probably what got him caught.

I guess that's the "fast guy, not a good baserunner" tag he had from before....

He hadn’t moved as Z strode toward the plate, then hopped as Z released, was only in his second step when Zim swung, but was still looking back……
He has to break full speed as his first move, because he’s not going back with Nick behind him.

Yeah, he was picked off the night before, and would have been again if Z hadn’t sailed the other throw into CF, so he was shy and the play failed.

And if TAWH is a nano second slower on his swing, that's a grand slam.

The Fontenot play on the Bard grounder…….unreal.

Who called the curveball to Zambrano?….That’s a lot of “baseball men” staring from the dugout who haven’t figured out what needs to be done here……..

I even CALLED the GS on that AB!

I watched it curve foul from our seats behind the foul pole. If that had gone out, the VU OBS would have been worth it.

It looked so good off the bat...... right place at the right time for your seats........if only...

The other thing about the TV….. I always thought Wrigley still had ivy…….. Way too much blue in the camera shots (is there one Nats fan in the Hoffpauir photo above?….or behind home plate?)….. And the chant and standing in the 9th with two outs?………Cubs home game…

The guy who writes the SBN Cubs blog has been in DC all weekend, and apparently he brought friends...

My feeling is that Nats fans who got fooled into buying season tickets are taking any chance they can to sell them for a profit on stubhub or other ways.

If I’m sitting there, I jump higher than their left fielder and knock that ball away. It was over the fence so it’s fair game. Rotten luck there were no tall Nats fans in the know in the area.

Adam Rubin of The NY Daily News spoke to a source who indicated that the Mets were ready to release righthander Tim Redding and eat what’s left on the one year, $2.25MM deal he signed this winter. Redding has been dreadful for the Amazin’s, allowing 86 baserunners and pitching to a 7.22 ERA in 52.1 IP this year.

heh..... what are the odds that history will record that Jimbo didn't do that bad..... considering...

Exhibit A: Soriano, Alphonso….. no long term deal…

Didn’t sign Julio Lugo as I was begging for……. actually, he was pretty good at throwing players back on the scrap same heap he was picking from….

Doubtful. Probably asking too much. Not enough desperate teams.

I wish Nick and TAWH could be in the playoffs. Willie’s won it all but he deserves better than this idiocy.

Speaking of Willie....... what an amazing, leaping double play..........

And don’t give me that he didn’t tag with the ball…… area play, and/or Lee rolled out of the base path anyway…

Unlikely, as in every year past....... the deadline comes and goes, and nothing......

Probably not even the pleasure of a DFA or two like last year…
