Chicago Cubs at Washington Nationals, Jul 19, 2009 1:35 PM EDT
Today's Starting Pitchers Are Going To Stare At You Now...
-- After Randy Wells replaced Ted Lilly last night, the Cubs called RHP Kevin Hart back up to take Wells' scheduled start in the Sunday finale in Nationals Park. The Nationals counter with former starter, reliever, closer-for-a-minute and now starter again, Garrett Mock, who returns to DC after an 8-game stint with the Syracuse Chiefs over which he allowed 25 H, 2 HR and 8 ER in 47.1 IP. Kevin Hart was called up in late June to work out of the pen, and then sent down to Triple-A Iowa after his first start of the season against Atlanta on July 8th...
This Day In Washington Baseball History - (The Continuing Attempt To Educate A Montreal Fan About DC Baseball History...)
July 19, 1915: The Washington Senators broke a three game losing streak with an 11-4 win over the Cleveland Indians. In the game, the Senators set a record that stands to this day when they managed to steal 8 bases in one inning (the 1st) off Indians' catcher Steve O'Neil. According to the Baseball Almanac, the record stands to this day, though it was tied four years later by the Philadelphia Philliles, who stole 8 in the 9th against the NY Giants.

JD Martin leaving us in Syracuse
Was supposed to snap Syracuse’s 3 game losing streak today.
The Mocker will dominate the Cubs like he did vs all the Triple A team
Also, I have my Zambrano shirt on- I figure if I wear the baseball gods will think I want the Cubs to win so in turn the Nationals will win- and lets try to score after the second inning today( yes I know they scored in the 8th inning last night- a little too late)
Go Chiefs
Go Nats- (They are slowly but surely fusing together.
You can't fool the baseball gods...uh, heck might as well try...

Hey Folks...
I’m a transplanted Cub fan here in the DC area. Had my first chance to come out to Nats Park and take in some games these last few days and just wanted to mention how—irrespective of the outcomes of the games—I’ve enjoyed the park and Nats fans.
I realize how annoying it is when visiting fans come in and try to take over, but I’ve found the Nats fans who sat around me to be nothing but polite, friendly, and even giving good natured ribs when they can. Much better than any other fans I’ve met around the baseball world.
I wish you guys luck moving forward in the season (though not against the Cubs of course). Like all Cub fans, I know what it’s like to root for a team that’s struggling. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see steady improvement in the seasons to come. :) At any rate, thanks to your fans I’ll be pulling for you.
You're welcome!
We’re a congenial sort, for the most part; there’s no sense in staying angry when you’re watching a team lose 100+ two seasons in a row, so you might as well be hospitable. Most of the Nats fans at the games these days are going to be pretty solid fans – the bandwagoners aren’t really out following this team. They’d probably be annoying (example A: Caps fans).

Thanks for the note CW!O...
I’m sure you noticed you’re not the only transplant..seems like every team in the majors has had their fans in the capital.
Here’s hoping there’s an NLCS between us in the future…

Pregame...
Deb is talking to Pat Corales. Asked him names of kids in the farm system who we should look out for.
JD Martin (not impressive except that he gets people out all the time)
Padilla (with numbers like that you have to take a look)
Derek Norris ((1.5 to 2 years away)
Desmond (rushed 3 or 4 years ago…now a fine baseball player)

If you can’t convince them, confuse them. - President Harry S Truman
I know that.
But my point is that the numbers make him look like a glorified singles hitter who doesn’t walk enough and has no head for stealing. If that’s major-league worthy on this team, so be it.

I have no clue the answer to this next question...but what are Guzman's numbers like?
And does Padilla look decent on defense?
If you can’t convince them, confuse them. - President Harry S Truman
Which Guzman? Cristian?
Guzmania’s in the same boat (although holy god I had no idea how little he was walking – just about 2% of his ABs) with somewhere around league average, maybe slightly below. The principle difference between Guzman and Padilla is that Guzman’s stats come at a spot that’s much harder to fill than Padilla (OF spots are something I’d term as replaceable).
I don’t know about Padilla’s defense, though – I haven’t had a chance to see him play.

The guy who sang "God Bless America" (and presumably the nat'l anthem) today is named D.C. Washington
He usually sings several times each season, and his renditions are powerful without being self-indulgent, and come at a noticeably higher tempo than most. I’d rate him second only to the DC Gay Men’s Chorus, who only perform the anthem once a year (during the series with the Mets next week, I believe—I have a neighbor who sings with them).

Well, great. With Kensing, it can only get better.
This may be a historic season in the bad way but with the season and hopefully a competent GM calling the shots, the team could improve next year.
Watching this collection of square pegs in round holes is really tough. I know every team has a few bad days and every team has negative fans. Those fans need to walk in our shoes. Over 70% of the Nats’ days are bad days. Yeah, the Cubs may not have won a series in 100 years, but we may be setting the record for worse team in the history of the game of baseball.
That said, they are my team, and I’ll keep watching every game (either live or on DVR)
