Washington Nationals' '09 First Round Pick Drew Storen's Potomac Nationals Debut...

Badge_-_potomac_medium

After agreeing (almost immediately) to a $1.6 million dollar signing bonus with the Washington Nationals just days after the 2009 MLB Draft, DC's second '09 1st Round pick, 21-year-old right-handed closer Drew Storen, was introduced to the nation's capital in a press conference where he was asked, as reported by Washington Post writer Chico Harlan in a Nationals Journal post entitled, "More on Storen", why he had decided to sign so quickly? Mr. Storen responded:

" I just wanted to get going. I miss playing. We didn't make the playoffs at school, and my arm is feeling great. I wanted to get going and really get that chance to help the Nationals win this year."

More On Drew Storen's Potomac Nationals Debut After The JUMP...

Star-divide

Storen, as the closer for the Stanford Cardinal, was (7-1) with 7 saves and a 3.80 ERA in 28 G and 42.2 IP over which he walked just 8 while collecting 66 K's in his sophomore year. The Cardinal baseball season ended on May 24th, and Storen started his professional career on June 18th with the Class-A Hagerstown Suns. Storen continued to throw strikes and collect K's, posting an (0-1) record with a 3.68 ERA in 11 games and 14.2 IP for the Suns, in which Storen struck out 26 batters without issuing a walk. MLB.com's Bill Ladson, in a blog post entitled, "Drew Storen promoted to Class A Potomac", asked "Acting" GM Mike Rizzo if Storen's work with the Suns had warranted a promotion, and Mr. Rizzo, (before the announcement of Storen's promotion had been made official), responded:

"'There is a possibility [he could be promoted]. I'm not sure,' Rizzo said. 'Like I said before, you really have to master the league before we move you up, but he is leaning toward really make it tough [when it comes to staying in Hagerstown] .'"

Storen was officially promoted to the Carolina League's Potomac Nationals this past Sunday, and he made his debut on Tuesday night, pitching 2.0 scoreless innings in a 5-4 win over the Lynchburg Hillcats to record his first save in his first outing for the P-Nats. Anthony Masterson (Broadcast/Media Assistant with the Class-A Carolina League's Potomac Nationals) sent along a link to his post game article entitled, "Storen Dominant as Nats Top Cats in Opener", wherein he describes Storen's debut:

"Using a brilliant mix of mid-90s fastballs and devastating curveballs, Storen kept the Hillcats guessing, striking out the side in his first Carolina League inning. He came out for the ninth and gave up a leadoff single to Eric Huber, but the right-hander out of Stanford stayed calm, getting two ground balls including a 4-6-3 double play to end the ballgame, giving Storen the first save of his professional career."

In a note on Storen's debut that Mr. Masterson included with the link to the P-Nats' game report, he added a comment which echoes Mr. Rizzo's statement from earlier this week before Storen's jump between the Nationals' two Class A affiliates..."Unfortunately for the P-Nats," Mr. Masterson wrote, "I can't imagine him sticking around much longer here with more outings like that. It has to be pretty exciting for everybody involved with the Nationals that he's doing so well so quickly. Just thought all the Nats fans might like to know..."

• Drew Storen's '09 Stats So Far (w/ Hagerstown/Potomac):

(0-1, 3.24 ERA), 12 G, 16.2 IP, 12 H, 6 ER, 2 HR, 29 K's, 0 BB.

I’d say a week as a P-Nat, and then on to Syracuse to help them win…….

See you in September, Storen.

Kind of hope its not the Giants b/c they have a lot to offer… But could help us in negiotation with BoSox or the Mets (if Omar stays dilusional and thinks they can make a run)

This has been a weird trade market with Rizzo, he’s on the block, he’s off the block, he’s on the block (insert Dunn, NJ, or Hammer)

I think we may be asking too much for our guys?

and Jack Wilson may be including, very interesting.

So take Boston out of the NJ derby. Looks like SF or Bust for NJ.

Heard some stuff about Dunn to STL too, crazyness (maybe we’ll get Pujols, thats a fair trade right?)

Boston trades the day they fall out of first place.

OK, Jocketty. We take Pujols and Ludwick and whatever Molina you have and you get Bard, Dunn and Elvis Hernandez.

I didn't like The RZO's semantic gymnastics in the last Nick Johnson article...

…seemed to me like one last bluff before he pulled Johnson off the table…I hope it doesn’t but maybe the other big 1st baseman getting moved will make someone desperate…

Some guy on MLBTR said the BoSox made an offer to the Nats last night and we turned it down.

If they offered us the same package as the Bucs took them I’m happy (a garbage AA pitcher and a PTBNL)

I imagine the Pirates may not even ask for much of anything in return. Just dumping his 7+ million dollar salary. The Nats are asking for the world to trade Nick.

DREW STOREN -- DC'S ACE!

BIGGEST ACE EVER! HE’S AN ACE!

In all seriousness, I’m excited to see him too. Unrelated, I can’t believe how many people are calling Lannan an “ace.” Come on guys, he struck out one. He got the shutout, but he is far from an ace. An ace is a guy like Roy Halladay, Johan Santana, CC Sabathia (sometimes), Justin Verlander, Dan Haren… not John Lannan (yet).

"An" ace and "our" ace is the distinction you're missing....

In a year or two he should be 3-4, but right now he’s holding it down for DC…

I see what you’re saying, but I don’t feel like every team needs to have an “ace.” Dan Storen is an ace, but that’s because he’s an ace, not because he’s playing for the Diamondbacks. When you put a bunch of ugly girls together, they’re still ugly, they just look better because they’re surrounded by ugly people.

by John Quinn on Jul 22, 2009 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I Always...

thought the ‘ace’ designation spoke more to the pitchers’ state of mind rather than his stuff…? If the team feels like it can win whenever you pitch or if you feel like you’re the man to stop a losing streak or pitch in the must win game then you’re an Ace. For sure ‘Cool Hand’ has guts-throwing 80% strikes with nary a pitch over ninety miles an hour…can’t believe Astacio actually shut the Braves out, who knew……

Here’s another take on the situation, from Nationals Pride. Jeff Bergin concludes that the pitching rotation will look like this:

SP – Steven Strasburg

SP – John Lannan

SP – Jordan Zimmermann

SP – Cheap Free Agent – more on that in my next post

SP – Craig Stammen/Ross Detwiler/Colin Balester/Shairon Martis/Garrett Mock rotation

RP – Logan Kensing

RP – Tyler Clippard

RP – Sean Burnett

RP – Free Agent

SU – Drew Storen

CP – Mike McDougal

I think Strasburg/Lannan/Zimmerman will be a potent combo, but I’m not sure that Strasburg will be in the majors at the beginning of the next year. I hope he is, but I really hope they don’t rush him to that point.

by John Quinn on Jul 22, 2009 2:51 PM EDT reply actions

No offense to you John...

But maybe if everyone in DC starts spelling Stephen Strasburg’s name right it will entice him to join us…

I think the 4-5 spots will be taken by two of the pitchers you list…the free agent pitcher thing didn’t go too well(see D. Cabrera, Odalis Perez etc)…

And that pen seems right…though I’m not sure MacDougal will hang on to the closer spot…

Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

by Patrick Reddington on Jul 22, 2009 3:05 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Hah, I didn’t even catch that, but it was a copy/paste from the article over at Nationals Pride.

If Clippard can keep throwing like he did two games ago, I think he deserves a shot at the starter spot. That’s what he expected to do, but was put in the pen at Syracuse. I’d still like to see more from him, but if he keeps it up I think he gets one of those spots.

by John Quinn on Jul 22, 2009 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

That's what I figured (the copy/paste) I just read it misspelled everywhere...

Even in Sports Illustrated…

There are so many starters in the system, some are going to have to either eventually be dealt or have to transition into the pen, just like Bergmann and some others, when they haven’t panned out in time have made the move…then you have guys with electric stuff focusing it for short periods and it can work well (like Clippard’s last few starts) or end up awful (see Joel Hanrahan)…

It’ll be interesting in the next few years to see how all these prospects make the roster…

Stammen – P

Why placate Guzzy? I believe Carpenter mentioned yesterday that Guzzy isn't a 2 spot man.

He’s not patient enough to give the lead off man his time to get thing done. Johnson is a perfect 2 spot and Willingham is the perfect 5 spot for this team. BTW I was thining abou this this morning while reading about Flores, Flores is a perfect 6 spot man.

Morgan 1
NJ 2
Zimm 3
Dunn 4
Hammer 5
Flores ( I know he’s out for the season) 6
Guzzy 7
Generalismo 8

I think somebody on MASN threw a stat of Guzman’s batting averages hitting in different spots and hitting second was (I think) over 100 points higher than all the other spots.
