Man, I like this one better than the MASN one...

McElroy still has Belliard in, so I’m not trusting that Pujols is really not in the lineup….

(although, this is not last night’s Cards lineup…)

Cardinals:

Schumaker – 2B
Rasmus – CF
DeRosa – 1B
Ludwick – RF
Ankiel – LF
Molina – C
Thurston – 3B
Ryan – SS
Wainwright – P

Mark Buehrle Perfect Game

This is awesome. First in five years, only the eighteenth in the history of baseball. More people have orbited the moon than have thrown perfect games.

I just wish he was a National.

by John Quinn on Jul 23, 2009 4:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Buehrle became the sixth pitcher in history to have thrown at least two career no-hitters, including a perfect game. Randy Johnson, Sandy Koufax, Jim Bunning, Addie Joss and Cy Young are the other five to have done so.

…center fielder DeWayne Wise, …just into the game as a defensive replacement, robbed Gabe Kapler of a leadoff home run in the ninth inning.

With the count 2-2, Kapler hit a drive to deep left-center. Wise sprinted, jumped and got his glove above the fence to rob Kapler of a home run.

The ball almost came out when Wise caromed off the fence, stumbled, fell to the ground and rolled. But he bounced right up, proudly displaying the ball for the crowd in his bare left hand.

Olsen's surgery was a success

By Pete McElroy on July 23, 2009 4:58 PM

Left-hander Scott Olsen has successful surgery to repair a small tear of his left labrum earlier today at the Washington Hospital Center.

“Olsen’s surgery went well,” said acting GM Mike Rizzo. “As little damage as could be expected was in there. Sometimes when you go in there you find stuff that was unexpected, this was all expected and as minimal as can be. Six to eight weeks until he starts a throwing program and you take it as tolerated from there.”

Rizzo said that Olsen should be ready for Spring Training.

The Nationals have a 40-man roster with 10 starting pitchers on it and with Olsen arbitration eligible and making a lot of money, Rizzo was asked his there is a chance he won’t be tendered.

“We’ve got a long way before we have to make those decisions.” he said.

I don't know, the playing close to the vest wears thin, as well.... (and is Olsen's $2.8mil or $2.24mil really that high?)

Now, it’s Dunn is available, but for a sky high price…….

Chico: "Contrary to what Rizzo said in a radio interview earlier this month, the Nationals are willing to trade cleanup hitter Adam Dunn before the July 31 trade deadline. But that doesn’t mean a trade is likely. The Nationals have listened to a few offers for Dunn, a club source said, but are not actively shopping him. The Nationals are said to be demanding excessively high returns for Dunn. One source called the Nationals’ asking price “painful.”

“Outfielder Josh Willingham remains the most sought-after player on the Washington roster, and is probably the most likely to get dealt.”

The solution is was to trade Guz……. to the Cards, who settled for Lugo…

Rizzo…..dropped the ball…

The article I read said the Red Sox are picking up......

The entire $13.5 million left on Lugo’s contract. He was DFA’d, so getting Duncan for him was better than getting nothing and having to eat the contract anyway, I guess.

by bluelineswinger on Jul 23, 2009 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But yeah... RIzzo dropped the ball

Though I get the feeling that Ryan remains the starter over Lugo most nights anyway. He’s been really solid this year, both with the glove and the bat.

My confidence in Rizzo is dropping faster than Nick Johnson's trade value...

I don’t get the Cards interest in Lugo, even for free…

Neither did I

And again, as a St. Louisan whose favorite team is consistently amongst the worst in the league, I pay pretty close attention to the Cards. I call them the team that I root for that actually has a shot.

Honestly, Ryan’s been fantastic at shortstop, but I guess Lugo could give them a solid middle infield bat off the bench. God knows Thurston has no business being in the major leagues. In one way, Lugo ensures that Wallace won’t come up with the Cardinals this year (at least until the rosters expand). Ryan has covered third in the past, so he’d give them one more option over there in case of an injury.

Still, I think Wallace probably should have gotten the call around mid-June and should be manning the hot corner for them right now. DeRosa should be playing second regularly, with Schumaker moved back to the outfield (most likely in left) and Ankiel on the bench.

Duncan’s presence on the Cardinals’ roster was nothing but nepotism (see: Dad’s the pitching coach)

D. Wright started at the bottom and worked his way up, Zim was given third and is struggling…

As someone who pulls for the Cardinals in about 154 games a year.......

They’d better not trade Wallace for Holliday. Even if they had a guaranteed extension for Holliday, it would be a bad deal for the Cardinals, but without a guaranteed extension, it would be brutal.

Then again, the last time the Cardinals dealt with the A’s, they did pretty well got raked over the coals pretty good:

Mark Mulder for Dan Haren (who was the younger, cheaper, and better pitcher immediately), Kiko Calero, and Daric Barton

[UPDATE, 8:30 p.m.] — I take back the part about brevity. The rain cell is hovering right atop Nats Park. It’s still pouring. We have no estimated time for this game’s resumption.

Game — Length of delay
April 10 at ATL — 122 minutes
April 20 vs. ATL — 163 minutes
April 21 vs. ATL — 61 minutes
May 3 vs. STL — 116 minutes (before postponement)
May 5 vs. HOU — 76 minutes
May 16 vs. PHI — called after 5.0 innings, after 90-minute delay
June 3 vs. SFG — 226 minutes (before postponement)
June 4 vs. SFG (Game 1) — 36 minutes
June 4 vs. SFG (Game 2) — 67 minutes (called after 6.0 innings)
June 9 vs. CIN — 107 minutes
June 10 vs. CIN — 130 minutes
June 18 at NYY — 326 minutes
June 29 at FLA — 37 minutes
June 30 at FLA — 89 minutes
July 1 at FLA — 19 minutes

15 games
1665 total minutes = 27.75 hours

Nats bench coach Pat Corrales tells me the farm system is loaded with talent. He spent the first half of this season evaluating what the minor league system is made of.

Pat really liked Jorge Padilla—the Triple-A All-Star is leading all full season minor leaguers with a .363 batting average, and he’s hit safely in 27 of his last 28 games played.
