The First Overall Pick In 2010 Better Be Worth It...Washington Nationals Lose 6-2 To San Diego Padres.
Errors On Parade...
E: 91 - The only reason Washington Nationals' right-hander Garrett Mock wasn't charged with two errors in the first is that they have another stat called passed balls to describe the fastball in the dirt Mock threw by DC backstop Josh Bard after giving up a leadoff single to the son of Tony Gwynn. Everth Cabrera tried a sac bunt with Gwynn on second, but Mock turned it into a single, throwing high to first and pulling Nick Johnson off the bag for the Nationals' 91st error and runners on first and third. RESULT: Gwynn scores from third on Adrian Gonzalez's sac fly, Cabrera scores on a two-out double by Padres' left fielder Chase Headly. 2-0 San Diego after a half...
E: 92 - With one out in the second and DC down 2-1 after Cristian Guzman's HR to center in the Nationals' first, Adam Dunn misplays a grounder that gets by Ryan Zimmerman at third and rolls into the corner, allowing Padres' catcher Eliezer Alfonzo to take third on the one-out double. RESULT: Garrett Mock gets two groundouts to strand Alfonzo on third, no harm Du...done. (ed. note - "E: 92.5 - To Garrett Mock for the 3-1 fastball to Luis Rodriguez in the fourth, which Rodriguez drilled to right to put San Diego up 3-1 after Guzman's 1st inning dinger had cut the early 2-0 lead in half.)

BACKPAGE: (Under Construction)...
• E: 93 - Fourth inning, Josh Bard tries to catch a foul ball popped up just down the third base off Kyle Blanks' bat, Bard slides on his knees but just flat-out misses it...a flying bat barrel was involved...RESULT: Nothing, really, but Luis Rodriguez did hit a HR in the next at bat to make it 3-1 Padres...
• E: 94 - Tony Gwynn, Jr. hits a groundball back to the mound to lead off the seventh, DC reliever Jason Bergmann fields and makes an awkward throw to first that's high, Gwynn reaches first safely on the Nationals' 94th error. RESULT: Everth Cabrera gets a sac bunt down to move Gwynn to second. Jason Bergmann gives Adrian Gonzalez the intentionals and Kevin Kouzmanoff doubles to score Gwynn and make it 6-2 Padres, which is how it would end.
Final Results: 4 Errors = 4 Runs, Nationals lose by 4....
• Don't Toss The Bat, Zim...
Padres' starter Mat Latos struggled to throw anything other than his mid-90's fastball for a strike today, but he nonetheless held the Washington Nationals to 5 hits and 2 ER, both on HR's, in 5.2 IP in which the 21-year-old right-hander struck out 5 and walked 2. Pitching to Cristian Guzman in the first, Latos started with a fastball outside for a called strike one, and he followed with a change inside and high that Cristian Guzman lined to deep center for a solo HR that was gone in a hurry. The second HR and only other run Latos gave up, was hit on a 3-2 change left up in the zone to Ryan Zimmerman, who launched it so far to center it almost hit Big Head Abe Lincoln where he stood in the stands greeting fans. Zimmerman got all of it and he knew it, but with the Nationals down 5-1 at that point, with the season they're having, not to mention the last few months Zimmerman's had at the plate, I think the bat toss was a little out of place. I understand it was a huge HR, but it only scored one run in what was then a 5-2 game, so maybe save the theatrics for a HR to ties or maybe wins a game, otherwise you're just showing up a rookie, who's in the midst of dominating and earning his first professional win.
A Moment With Cristian Guzman...
Hi, Cristian. I've always liked you, even after the unproductive first few years off the turf, but the next time you swing at three-straight balls with the bases loaded like you did in the seventh inning tonight, I'm going to start siding with the "Cristian Guzman's quit on us" crowd...That being said, Padres' reliever Luke Gregorson did have nasty stuff...but in that situation...just take one, please...
GAME REPORT:

Mat Latos is done. Nick Johnson pops up a pitch from Luke Gregerson, foul of third to end the sixth.
Tony Gwynn, Jr. grounds back to the mound, Jason Bergmann throws to first, high, Nick Johnson pulled off the bag, Gwynn safe. Everth Cabrera’s sac bunt moves Gwynn to second. Adrian Gonzalez gets the intentionals, and Kevin Kouzmanoff makes DC pay with an RBI double to left to score Gwynn and chase Bergmann. 6-2 Padres. Ron Villone turns Chase Headley around to the right side of the plate. Headley pops out to first. Kyle Blanks takes ball four and walks to load the bases again. Luis Rodriguez flies out to right to end the threat...Josh Willingham flies out to Tony Gwynn in center. Josh Bard drops a one-out single into short right. Alberto Gonzalez pops out to the infield. "So following the loss, the interim manager brought his team together for a tongue-lashing."
“Riggleman chews out his Nats players following a ghastly 6-2 loss to the Padres.”
So, the kumbaya has left the clubhouse at the 96 game mark….. missed signs, the errors even with the extra “work”, coming out flat, " it’s hard to think of a game in which the Nats showed less effort, fire or intensity than they did tonight."……
Who knew it would turn out like this? Bring back Dukes and make him Captain…

Sounds ugly. Glad i missed it.
At least we’re also finding out that our 2nd teir pitching…. is well, 2nd teir.

Good thing Guz hit the dinger, but I cant tell if Riggs chewed him out for the swinging K on three pitches with the bases loaded after the walk and HBP……
“We can’t quit,” he said. “You get your tail beat but you keep fighting, keep working and that’s what I plan to do and we’re going to find out if there is somebody who cant get on board with that because we’ll lead them to the door.”
Ahem: “Center fielder Willie Harris said you can take 200 grounders or 200 fly balls in practice and mistakes are going to occur.” (maybe TAWH is not onboard with the practicing….)
Maybe giving Nyjer the day off was not a good idea…….

Well...
After a few years of being the worst team in the division…and a couple years of being the worst team in the entire league, the players get used to losing. They don’t like it, but it’s not changing. Last year we blamed on injuries. This year we blame Bowden. Let’s hope next year we can praise somebody for doing something right.
Honestly, whatever was being done before didn’t work, so Riggles is trying something different. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a month of spring training to pound his way of doing things into their heads. It’s refreshing to me to see a press conference when the manager calls his team out. Not just one person…the whole bunch of them.
He said something like…these people have signed contracts and they are paid a lot of money to play baseball and the effort tonight (last night) was not good. …and if they aren’t giving their best effort, Mr. Rizzo will find somebody who will.
Willie Harris, in that interview, was standing up for his co-workers, but he was way off base. He said something like you can take 200 grounders away then you get one in the game and it takes a bad hop. Well, Willie, why the hell don’t all the other teams average an error every game. Do they ALL get lucky bounces when all the Nats get are bad hops? The law of large numbers says no. Willie looked like he was backed into a corner when being interviewed, and on top of the umpire calling horrible strikes on him…well I think it was unlike the TAWH we’re used to seeing.
Also, after the previous game for Nyjer Morgan, maybe he needed a day off. I don’t remember too much but I think he had one or two failed bunt attempts and the weird route he took to that ball that got past him (which wasn’t bad, but was not like him. He’s been going full force since he walked in the door. Because of the rainout with the Cardinals, there are a lot of games without an off day. Has Dunn had a day off? Maybe it’s time.
The concurrent Guzman and General slumps are killers too.

+1 from me man
Should have happened months ago. Someone need to plant the foot up the butt of some of these guys and suggest that the current effort is crap. Personally, Id rather have a less talented team that plays hard every day (2007 from memory) rather than a team that quits or just doesnt have the fire. Maybe its an Australian thing… but that sort of team that is the underdog and fights and scraps for every win is much better to watch…its probably gets better results. Guys like Morgan are the ones we need for the team…that’s one of the reasons I wont be disappointed if there are a few trades made – some fresh blood in the team probably wont hurt even if its not as much talent.

I've always rooted for the underdog, (with the Expos, how could one not...) and don't know how I would react to a perennial powerhouse.
I definitely subscribe to the it matters not if you win or lose, it’s how you play the game thing. Play with heart and I can accept anything…Screw the passivity, and Riggleman earned a tiny bit of respect from me last night, not so much for the tirade, but for the regular after-game meetings that allowed for it. I reject rhetoric that doesn’t have action connected with it…
Thanks Roscoe for fleshing out the aftermath…..

PS
Bard has really impressed me this season. In both attitude and some performances. He is one of the few that doesnt make excuses and looks like he is out there to play until he dies. He’s worth keeping around.

I turned the game off after it got to 5-1
glad Riggleman called the team out. No excuses, earn your money every day. I haven’t seen the film, but Zim doesn’t strike me as someone who tries to showboat. Maybe he was just happy to get the homer after some frustrating at bats. Mock was a disappointment.
Someone said the same about Zim last night, that it was an "I'll show you a SLUMP!" bat toss...
…and he did kill it, but against any veteran the next batter, or Zim in his next at bat, may have been reminded that you don’t show up the pitcher…

So, you think the front office realizes they actually need talent yet?
The natives are getting restless – although if it took 300 games for people to get pissed, maybe that’s half the problem, too. Playing harder and/or playing smarter will help for sure, but this team wouldn’t be good even with an improved effort. I think we’ve known that for a while. It’s going to be up to the front office to really do anything constructive about making sure this team doesn’t suck for seasons to come, else we’re staring at Pirates 2.0 and nobody wants that.
Yelling, screaming, and calling out the team …eh, it may help, it may not. Offhand, I’d say it’s a good thing, simply because we’re so far below the basement that we wouldn’t even notice a step down. Really, the only thing I care about at this point is making the best team possible for 2010: let the guys from AAA have their (legitimate) shot to contribute at the ML level, especially in the rotation, don’t do anything else reactionary with the bullpen, trade off the guys that will bring back something worth trading for, and – for the love of God, and for all the jokes I make about it – sign freaking Strasburg. Nothing’s going to suck more than getting the first two picks in 2010.
For the record, I’m setting the first season worth caring about at 2012. There’s too much that’s missing in the meantime.
The good thing about Riggles last night in the presser in my opinion was that it seemed like he calmly questioned their work ethic and manhood.
Hopefully the long overdue public talk of the manager will help. Two weeks from now, I am hoping the Nats will look a little better. Let’s get that winning percentage above .300. The rah rah positive crap doesn’t work with grown men. That’s for college and high school and little league baseball. Gut check time.

Is that in Actas first season, we didnt have the talent… be we had the attitude and it showed. We didnt finish last – and we ended up with 4th. You’re right – eventually we need to upgrade in talent – but most of these performances could have been as a result of players who have been with the Nats for a while who arent giving a toss about losing.
Agree about getting the team ready for next season… which is why I think we need to start trading some players and looking to the future. Some of these guys have given up playing for the Nats.

The first overall pick is worth it.
This years pick,Stephen Strasburg, and next years pick…_ are worth our present losing distress. They will be the first in a long line of great players coming to Washington in the years to come. With both of them with us, ticket sales and fan merchandise will flourish. We will finally have money to spend. Not to the degree as Boston or New York, but not as little as Florida either. This leads to the only thing that matters, wins.
Next years MLB draft will include Bryce Harper, Anthony Ranaudo, A.J Cole, Justin Grimm and a couple other top prospects. Bryce Harper is the best of all them, but the least expierenced.
Anyone of these along with Strasburg will turn us around. Of course we have to SIGN both picks.
Get Oher or Maybin please
Maybe a couple of the top five picks from this year won't sign...
Seems like they are waiting for Strasburg to sign before they sign. Mid-August will be wild.
