GameThread: Washington Nationals At Milwaukee Brewers - Game 101 Of 162.
Washington Nationals at Milwaukee Brewers, Jul 29, 2009 8:05 PM EDT
Federal Baseball.com Predicts...The FUTURE!!!
July 16, 2009 - Ed Chigliak, in an article entitled, "SB Nation's Mid-Season NL East Roundtable":
Ed Chigliak (Federal Baseball): I was already laying the groundwork for a Nick Johnson to San Francisco for Jonathan Sanchez rumor since Sanchez was struggling all season and a Johnson deal seems regrettably inevitable, then Sanchez had to go and ruin it with his no-hitter this week. I can't think of an instance of a pitcher with a no-hitter being traded in the same year he threw a no-no...unless you count DC starter (currently Triple A Syracuse starter) Shairon Martis, who threw a rule-shortened no-no in the '06 WBC and was traded to Washington that summer...
July 29, 2009 - Roy Halladay still likely to get traded from Toronto - SI.com's Jon Heyman
The Nationals requested Jonathan Sanchez in a package for Johnson, and that might have been a fair request before Sanchez's no-hitter.
For my next trick, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat...

Interesting lineup...
Leaving LF empty is enough better than having Dunn in LF that we can have Hammer learn how to play RF by watching Kearns?

Obviously not a baseball man. Does not know how to play the game Right Like Riggleman.
Gotta keep Kearns fresh off the bench for the stretch run, or he won’t be any good to anyone…

TINM!
Morgan is hitting .389 (22 games), fourth-best in baseball for July. His 13 stolen bases are tops. Just as relevant: The metrics that measure fielding, even as the sample size increases, only reaffirm the best-case hopes. UZR/150 measures how many runs above or below average a player is defensively over 150 games. Among the 45 players who’ve played at least 200 innings in center this year, Morgan’s UZR/150 (25.8) is second-best in baseball. (DeWayne Wise of the White Sox has a 28.8 UZR/150.)

That'd work for my fantasy team........
Seriously, though. Best thing that could have happened to him. Even though the Pirates are already pretty deep at C and 1b, the Mariners had clearly just decided they never wanted to give him a shot. He destroyed AAA in 2007 and 2008, was having a good year there this year (not as good, but there’s a good shot he was bored with the level). Seattle’s response, despite somehow staying in the race until late July in spite of Kenji Johjima (.297 OBP with 3 homers), Rob Johnson (don’t even need to go there), Mike Sweeney (.297 OBP with 3 homers), and Ken Griffey Jr. (.211/.325/.375) eating up all those ABs where Clement’s bat would have made so much sense, was to keep him in Tacoma all year.
by bluelineswinger on Jul 29, 2009 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, the Rob Johnson over Clement decision is weird.
Still, that was their FO’s decision and the Pirates may reap the benefits. With that being said, both teams could end up winning the deal, since Snell was done with the Pirates too. Both players could benefit from a new organization.

Not saying it's a horrible deal for either team
I will say this, and I’m not completely dogging Rizzo when I say this.
I would kill to have Neal Huntington as the GM of this team. Took a look at his team, realized that the ceiling for it this season was to finish 10-15 games under .500. Instead of sitting on the veteran bats with expiring contracts, he’s made several really strong moves. In a few cases, he didn’t even decide that he had to wait until a day or two before the trade deadline to do so, also. I like the Sanchez for Alderson deal, too.
by bluelineswinger on Jul 29, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions
That's one heck of a deal.
Sanchez has an offensive skillset I hate (batting skill defined largely by BABIP), and Alderson’s not bad at all. Huntington’s done a good job so far; early returns are that he’s changed the way everyone thinks in their front office. If only, right?

I love how every time that they've made a trade, though
Everyone talks about how rough it must be to be a Pirates’ fan. Try being a Nats’ fan who is in what’s probably a worse situation with the roster and watching your GM NOT make moves.
Deals I can think of that he’s made so far:
- Bay for Andy Laroche, Brandon Moss, and Craig Hansen (shrug…. I like Laroche, but Hanson and Moss haven’t shown me anything)
- Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte for Jeff Karstens, Ross Ohlendorff, and Jose Tabata (Tabata still has a futrue….. Karstens and Ohlendorff have been league average [if not better] starters.
- Morgan and Burnett for Milledge and Hanrahan (Like our short-term return so far, and don’t think it’s a bad return in the long-term. Still, Milledge’s potential ceiling [that I don’t think he’ll ever reach] makes the deal worthwhile for Pitt)
- Adam Laroche for a couple of ’spects from Boston (not a great return, but some organizational depth for a malcontent)
- Nate McLouth for Gorkys Hernandez, Charlie Morton, and Jeff Locke (most importantly, opened space for McCutchen…. Hernandez has leadoff potential. Morton’s pretty much big-league ready. Don’t know a lot about Locke)
- Wilson and Snell for Clement, Cedeno, and three pitching prospects (I could make a case that Clement is the best player in that deal… right now)
- Sanchez for Alderson (Alderson doesn’t project as an ace, but should fit a little below that. Outstanding control/command pitcher who is pretty close to the bigs despite being only 21)

this isnt even
Mock’s fault… these guys arent major league pitchers
you need to bring a dependable arm in here
Or 3 arms, but it's not going to accomplish anything of note this season and it'll hurt future years.
Might as well shellshock a guy or two who won’t figure into long-term plans and keep the kids who’ll be actual future starters ready to roll.

bring in a guy who’s relatively young that can pitch…
I wouldnt give away any young pitching to get one, id give away offense
mock stays
but hes a AAA pitcher… let him develop
Eh, he's 26 and has done well in AAA.
He needs to learn how to pitch to ML players; if he can do that I think he’s okay on the back end of a rotation, but there’s only one place he can learn that (and it’s not Spring Training ::rimshot::).

Ive seen some that say around 28 for sabermetrics….but in any event… I think at 26, you’re at the age where you’ve got to show that you belong in a rotation… we’re not going to send him back to AAA until he’s 30 and then bring him up for a try.

I've always heard the late 20s for pitchers
28, 29…. I think the point here is that Mock both has a lower ceiling than some of the younger guys and that he’s kind of at a make or break point. You’re better served running a 26 year old starter with a mid-level future and risking “ruining” him (which, honestly, I think this is pretty much what he is) than taking a 22-23 year old with a better future who would be better served getting some more time to develop out there.

well torre has been sort of charmed
in that he gets saddled with this “best manager” label. Truth of the matter is, his teams of late have just had lots of talent…. nothing to do with him really.
In spite of him, I would argue
I concur on Cox and LaRussa.

tonight is another example
defense is not losing this team games. when they get decent pitching, they win
But weve got to win these close games
Left Mock in for too long…its not rocket science… we ALL would have pulled him out as he was getting shelled.
