GameThread: Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals. Game 77 Or 78 Of 162.
Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals, Jul 3, 2009 6:35 PM EDT
TODAY'S STARTING PITCHERS ARE GOING TO STARE AT YOU NOW...Kawakami Means Business.
The Nationals vs Kawakami...
Adam Dunn - 1 for 5, .200 AVG, 1 HR, 1 RBI.
Alberto Gonzalez - 1 for 2, .500 AVG.
Willie Harris - 1 for 1, 1.000 AVG.
Anderson Hernandez - 0 for 3, .000 AVG.
Nick Johnson - 2 for 6, .333 AVG, 1 RBI.
Austin Kearns - 1 for 3, .333 AVG, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 3 BB.
Nyjer Morgan - 0 for 1, .000 AVG, 1 RBI.
Ryan Zimmerman - 2 for 5, .400 AVG, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI's.
Detwiler vs The Braves...
Matt Diaz - 0 for 1.
Yunel Escobar - 0 for 1.
Nate McLouth - 0 for 2, 1K.
Ross Detwiler Just Can't Win...
Washington lefty Ross Detwiler is (0-4) and the Nationals are 1-7 in his 8 starts this season, but 4 of those 8 starts have been 1-run losses. Detwiler was also (0-3) in Double-AA Harrisburg this season in 6 starts, leaving him (0-7) in a combined 14 starts and 72.0 IP in '09 in which he's allowed 79 H, 41 R, 35 ER, 27 BB and 5 HR's, while collecting 57 K's...Kenshin Kawakami is coming off a line drive to the neck off the bat of Yanks' pitcher Joba Chamberlain. Kawkami's (1-0) with a 3.33 ERA in 5 starts and 27.0 IP in June, and Atlanta's won 3 of 5 with the 34-year-old right-hander on the mound.
DC vs The ATL in '09...
The Nationals and Braves haven't played one another since April 22nd when the Braves lost 2 of 3 one-run games in DC's Nationals Park. Before that it was Atlanta sweeping Washington in a three game set in Turner Field from 4/10-12. The Braves are 5-5 in their last 10 and they've dropped to fourth in the NL East, though they're still only 2.0 games out of first behind the Mets, who are 1.0 game out and the Marlins and Phillies, who are tied.

Nationals Park
I’m heading to the National game Sat. What would you guys reccomend I see in and around the ballpark?
by Civardi on Jul 3, 2009 4:24 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Not much around the park except for a misleadingly labeled Beer "Garden"...
Inside the view from the Loft is beautiful…the Capitol behind the outfield the lovely rolling Anacostia behind homeplate…
I live outside of DC and only travel in to the area for games, however, maybe some of the regulars will be able to give you better ideas. Have a nice day at the park.

Well, it includes the words “Frenchy” and “You”…you can use your imagination to come up with the last word.
And it actually has 2 meanings…one for when he does good and one for when he does bad.

Wasn't a fan of signing...have grown to respect his powers...OBP and HR...
He’s a defensive liability, but if you hide him in left he does less damage…
My big problem is that he was brought in to play first where I’d like Nick Johnson to be for a while longer…

I hear he’s even worse there than in the outfield. I like him as a hitter, but our outfield defense is bad enough without a statue. I’m sort-of glad we didn’t sign him.

Well, the only things left for him are K, BB, or a hit.
Popped foul on third…then first…then weak grounder to the pitcher.

his OPS dropped over 200 points last month
he had a couple weeks of post-extension goodness, and then said “fuckit” and has been below replacement player since.

Could have an injury they're trying to hide.

To expound:
This organization is exactly the kind of org that would hide an injury or encourage the player to “play through it” – likely the latter. Dibble’s machismo isn’t the only place you’ll find that mentality around here.

Zimm normally has a bad April, then hits his stride. It's just delayed till June this season.

Yeah, kid's not a strong starter.
But he had one heck of a hot streak early. It’s a bad run for him, but I don’t know if it’s regression or something else. I have no reason to think injury, but I don’t know for sure.

Have no clue about his personal life, but that doesn't sound like Zim...
