Ross Detwiler Just Can't Win...

Washington lefty Ross Detwiler is (0-4) and the Nationals are 1-7 in his 8 starts this season, but 4 of those 8 starts have been 1-run losses. Detwiler was also (0-3) in Double-AA Harrisburg this season in 6 starts, leaving him (0-7) in a combined 14 starts and 72.0 IP in '09 in which he's allowed 79 H, 41 R, 35 ER, 27 BB and 5 HR's, while collecting 57 K's...Kenshin Kawakami is coming off a line drive to the neck off the bat of Yanks' pitcher Joba Chamberlain. Kawkami's (1-0) with a 3.33 ERA in 5 starts and 27.0 IP in June, and Atlanta's won 3 of 5 with the 34-year-old right-hander on the mound.

DC vs The ATL in '09...

The Nationals and Braves haven't played one another since April 22nd when the Braves lost 2 of 3 one-run games in DC's Nationals Park. Before that it was Atlanta sweeping Washington in a three game set in Turner Field from 4/10-12. The Braves are 5-5 in their last 10 and they've dropped to fourth in the NL East, though they're still only 2.0 games out of first behind the Mets, who are 1.0 game out and the Marlins and Phillies, who are tied.

Nationals Park

I’m heading to the National game Sat. What would you guys reccomend I see in and around the ballpark?

by Civardi on Jul 3, 2009 4:24 PM EDT reply actions

Not much around the park except for a misleadingly labeled Beer "Garden"...

Inside the view from the Loft is beautiful…the Capitol behind the outfield the lovely rolling Anacostia behind homeplate…

I live outside of DC and only travel in to the area for games, however, maybe some of the regulars will be able to give you better ideas. Have a nice day at the park.

Well, it includes the words “Frenchy” and “You”…you can use your imagination to come up with the last word.

by Little Lady on Jul 3, 2009 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Wasn't a fan of signing...have grown to respect his powers...OBP and HR...

He’s a defensive liability, but if you hide him in left he does less damage…

My big problem is that he was brought in to play first where I’d like Nick Johnson to be for a while longer…

1B?

I hear he’s even worse there than in the outfield. I like him as a hitter, but our outfield defense is bad enough without a statue. I’m sort-of glad we didn’t sign him.

by Little Lady on Jul 3, 2009 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions

He's bad at first, and though Johnson's been shaky at first recently...

I think the whole infield will suffer for Dunn replacing him if he is dealt…

Errr.... Switched out... couldn't watch Villone

Interesting thing to switch out to, though. Bailey cruised tonight in Cincinnati. But the Cardinals loaded the bases down 3-0 with one out in the eighth for Pujols. Personally, I call for the intentional walk, take your chances with Ludwick, and hold onto that two run lead. Dusty Baker disagreed….. and paid handsomely. Pujols now 6-7 with 4 grand slams with the bases loaded this year. How the hell can anyone let him beat them at this point?

Love Pujols.... Admittedly, as a St. Louis guy

I pull for the Cards in every game when they’re not playing the Nats. In other words, they’re the team that has a chance that I pull for more than anyone else. Still, I just don’t get it. Even if he had someone amazing protecting him in the lineup, you just can’t let Pujols beat you! I think I remember discussing this when the Cards were in Washington earlier this year.

He's really good lookin', too!

Uh, I mean…he strikes out a lot of batters, too!

Have him in a couple of fantasy leagues

But he couldn’t hold down the closer’s job. Like Soriano, too, but Gonzalez’s control was just WAY off at the beginning of the year.

They split time as closer...

He still closes sometimes. But Soriano is just dominant this year.

Yeah... With Soriano looking better this year

You’re usually going to find the righty getting more chances. Still, it was Gonzalez’s to lose at the beginning of the year and his poor start let Soriano make it a platoon.

by bluelineswinger on Jul 3, 2009 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

He's wasn't doing poorly...

He just wasn’t as good as Soriano. Funny thing is, the closers job was Soriano’s to lose last year…which he did when he got hurt.

Ladson...

Fourth months after it was revealed that infielder Esmailyn Gonzalez was really Carlos Alvarez and they moved their Dominican academy from San Cristibal to Boca Chica, the Nationals agreed to terms with five international players, MLB.com has learned.

A baseball source familiar with the Nationals thinking declined to give the names of the players because physicals and an investigation on the players are pending. The source also said two of the players are legitimate prospects.
An announcement is expected to be made by the Nationals within a few days.
