Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

No more Colome, finally

Jesus Colome was designated for assignment after the Nats' victory on the Fourth of July (Saturday). That roster move was long overdue. Colome had an 8.40 ERA over 16 appearances this season. He walked far too many batters and generally brought the pace of games down to a crawl. This contributed to the Nats' defensive lapses as the defensive players had to stand around out in the field waiting for Colome to throw his pitches, or watch as he walked yet another hitter. Time to bring up another of the youngsters and give him a tryout. Maybe Garrett Mock is ready to return to the big leagues again. But almost anyone would be better than Colome was this year.

I think this is the last of the Bowden "promise" deals.

When they re-signed him last year, they probably shouldn’t have promised him a roster spot when he was eligible.

Well we finally got rid of the really hard throwers who couldn't get the ball over.

We have had 4 guys who at some point in their ML careers have been clocked at over 100 MPH. Colome, Hanrahan, Kensing, and Cabrera. That have all been cut from the team. Its not speed but control and hitting spots Jim (Bowden)!

And they blamed St. Clair for not fixing them. McCatty got Rizzo to just give up on them.

No point throwing 100mph if u cant throw a strike

Or if u throw straight as a arrow.

Plenty of HOF’er who dont throw hard…

The conventional wisdom was pitchers, not throwers. Then this fascination with the radar gun changed the choices, and doesn't seem to be working.

I just read that Marquis’ newfound success was due to groundball pitcher (sinkerballer) with groundball defence. Strikeouts are nice when you need them, but the 100mph doesn’t guarantee anything…
