GameThread: Washington Nationals At Colorado Rockies - Game 81 Or 82 Or 162.
Washington Nationals at Colorado Rockies, Jul 7, 2009 8:40 PM EDT
TODAY'S STARTING PITCHERS ARE GOING TO STARE AT YOU NOW...
The Nationals vs Hammel...
Josh Bard - 2 for 3, .667 AVG.
Nyjer Morgan - 2 for 3, .667 AVG.
Josh Willingham - 0 for 1.
Thoughts On Manny Acta...(ed. note - I answered a few questions from another blogger over the holiday weekend, but the interview never saw the light of day, so rather than consider it time wasted, I thought I'd just reprint my part of the Q&A here...")
Q: Do you like DC Manager Manny Acta?
Federal Baseball (FB): I'm actually a huge Manny Acta fan, and was really disappointed recently when talk surfaced that he'd be fired. Luckily the Nationals put together a quick four game win streak, which included two straight on the road in Yankee Stadium, and if he was on the way out, he must have changed someone's mind.
Q: What's your biggest complaint about Acta?
FB: If I had one complaint it would be his tendency to show too much faith in some players, with his use of Jesus Colome this past Friday late in a tie game which quickly turned into a loss as a perfect example. Acta kept throwing Joel Hanrahan out there long after just about everyone had concluded he could no longer do the job, though, admittedly, Acta's just using what he's been given to work with on the roster in most of the instances I would cite in support of this complaint.
Q: What are his strengths?
FB: As bad as the Nationals have been under Acta, and they are almost 100 games below .500 in the two and half seasons he's been at the helm, Acta's kept the team competitive in spite of near-constant injuries and roster turnovers, but I don't think he's been give an opportunity to manage as much as he's just done damage control so far. The fact that he's kept calm and mostly positive throughout this all are his greatest accomplishments thus far. He was brought in because of his ability to communicate with players and work on developing young talent, and I think he's finally going to get a chance to show what he can do in the next couple of years.
Q: If not Acta, who would you want as the Nationals' Manager?
FB: I kinda wish Frank Robinson had never left. No offense to Acta, but Frank Robinson should have been given a chance to compete with a real roster after what he went through before the team left Montreal. If Mr. Robinson isn't coming back, I'll stick with Acta.

never saw a replay on Dunn's hit
but I wondered if the ball hit the yellow line for a HR
I was really upset that they couldn’t get any RBIs when they had the bases loaded.
Why did Manny leave Belly in? this year is not last year. He’s not giving us any defining moments. why not pinch hit Gonzo?
If you believe Tom Boswell... (regarding trades)
“…and perhaps even mildly disgruntled Ronnie Belliard, who’s being showcased now in hopes somebody remembers he started for the ’06 champion Cardinals.”
No idea on Dunn’s double.

How can you?
How can you be middle of the pack in the NL in scoring, have a functional young pitching rotation and yet be on a pace for an utterly awful 113 loses?
Because we have the worst bullpen in creation and the worst defense seen in a long time… that’s how.

I'm still trying to figure out the car parts analogy.....
What part of the car can’t hit sac flies?

I think he is fundementally right thou
The team is lopsided and unbalanced. They do need to move on a few guys. Belli is just one.
"Baseball is like church. Many attend; few understand."
Agreed on the lopsidedness....especially now.
It shouldn’t have been, if everyone at least performed to their previous levels. Getting Dunn started throwing it out of whack, but he was insurance for Nick and another big bat that was seen as the only big missing piece.
Management wasted ST and alternately panicked and was paralyzed right out of the gate.
And with tonight, the season is half over…

Doghouse and I were thinking last year when Zim was rehabbing, that the Nationals should...
…send all of their kids down to one of the affiliates so they could tear it up and see what winning was like.

About that Zim HR
it’s in keeping with his hacking lately. He has a lot of weak groundouts, strikeouts or flyouts, and the occasional 2B or HR. He is swinging for the fences instead of focusing on solid line drives. It’s like he wants to be Adam Dunn without the walks. Despite this HR, his poor OPS reflects his new strategy. In short, I retract nothing! :P
I take ur point a bit
I think hes been hacking a bit… more liners.

So you guys were bashing me after Zim's HR
…and then he comes out and gets another GIDP. Ed: yes, I honestly think he is the type of guy that might just mail it in and stop trying to compete in producing a quality AB every single time.
1. He just got a massive contract.
2. The Nats are obviously going to finish in the cellar this year.
It’s the perfect recipe for a hot start (high OPS) to turn into hacking (lots of GIDP, fewer line drives, fewer walks, the occasional HR).
I mean really
the HR comes @ Coors of all places. Easiest place to discount a HR :P
But it was a really long homer, right?...... right?

Dont get me wrong – Dunn has come through but there have been also lot of games where he hasnt come up with the big hit. Its almost like we need a NJ with power.

but if dunn made more contact
he wouldnt drive in nearly as many runs… how many contact hitters you know drive in 120? its not all about batting average…. there are things more important to a ball club

"Baseball is like church. Many attend; few understand."
he has 59 now
we arent at the break yet…
the reason he has never driven in more than 106 is because he played for two teams that never got on base behind him…. hes a 120-130 guy on a decent hitting team
i didnt mean rbis as much as slugging pct
extra base hits drive in runs more than singles… they just do
true
im a fan of both – but i was making the point of less HRs. And more contact. Weve got to get the ball in play

Oh, never mind...
Kearns figured out a way to kearns it up.
Tried to steal, fell, fileder drops the ball and Kearns STILL gets tagged out.

Lost him.... almost might as well have once Gonzalez swiped second
Particularly considering the count was 3-0…. Smith’s been just plain sick off the bench this year anyway. 11-24.

its safe to assume
That Goggles is a dud.
Carlos Gonzalez Ball, Ball, Ball, Ball, C Gonzalez walked, S Smith hit for A Embree
Seth Smith Ball, Ball, Ball, C Gonzalez stole second
"Baseball is like church. Many attend; few understand."
tavarez has done that all year to left handed hitters though
he should be used ONLY to right handers, he is the reverse of ronnie belliard, who should be used only AGAINST left handers
at least u have some theory
I think they both just plain suck… lefties or righties.

Double play grounder right to Beimel.... Turns, looks
Guz not quick enough to the bag, but the throw wasn’t a good one anyway. Throw gets to Harris about ten feet behind the bag, didn’t even get the runner at first.

wow a heads up play
cmon dunn, give us a 1-5 with purpose
I am officially DONE with Guzman
Not to take any of the blame away from Beimel, but that was yet another example of Guzman’s complete and total lack of hustle and intensity in the field. So was his error in the previous inning, when he tried to backhand a ball he should easily have gotten in front of, missed it, and watched it bounce off his foot. Toss in his constant first pitch hacking…. I’ve just had it!

He should be moved. You need great defense up the middle. A la Rafael Belliard. Couldnt hit…but could flash the glove.

Langerhans is batting on MASNHD against the Orioles. Ooh. K.
I may have to watch this game for a while to, like Mezza, try to repress the memory of what I witnessed in Denver.
Manny: more disappointed in walks than the defense.
ZimmN didn’t have it tonight.
Happy with Burnett.
Manny looked like he’d been either crying or enraged while talking to his team. Maybe it’s the altitude, low humidity or suck factor getting to him.
