Thoughts On Manny Acta...(ed. note - I answered a few questions from another blogger over the holiday weekend, but the interview never saw the light of day, so rather than consider it time wasted, I thought I'd just reprint my part of the Q&A here...")

Q: Do you like DC Manager Manny Acta?

Federal Baseball (FB): I'm actually a huge Manny Acta fan, and was really disappointed recently when talk surfaced that he'd be fired. Luckily the Nationals put together a quick four game win streak, which included two straight on the road in Yankee Stadium, and if he was on the way out, he must have changed someone's mind.

Q: What's your biggest complaint about Acta?

FB: If I had one complaint it would be his tendency to show too much faith in some players, with his use of Jesus Colome this past Friday late in a tie game which quickly turned into a loss as a perfect example. Acta kept throwing Joel Hanrahan out there long after just about everyone had concluded he could no longer do the job, though, admittedly, Acta's just using what he's been given to work with on the roster in most of the instances I would cite in support of this complaint.

Q: What are his strengths?

FB: As bad as the Nationals have been under Acta, and they are almost 100 games below .500 in the two and half seasons he's been at the helm, Acta's kept the team competitive in spite of near-constant injuries and roster turnovers, but I don't think he's been give an opportunity to manage as much as he's just done damage control so far. The fact that he's kept calm and mostly positive throughout this all are his greatest accomplishments thus far. He was brought in because of his ability to communicate with players and work on developing young talent, and I think he's finally going to get a chance to show what he can do in the next couple of years.

Q: If not Acta, who would you want as the Nationals' Manager?

FB: I kinda wish Frank Robinson had never left. No offense to Acta, but Frank Robinson should have been given a chance to compete with a real roster after what he went through before the team left Montreal. If Mr. Robinson isn't coming back, I'll stick with Acta.

never saw a replay on Dunn's hit

but I wondered if the ball hit the yellow line for a HR

I was really upset that they couldn’t get any RBIs when they had the bases loaded.
Why did Manny leave Belly in? this year is not last year. He’s not giving us any defining moments. why not pinch hit Gonzo?

If you believe Tom Boswell... (regarding trades)

“…and perhaps even mildly disgruntled Ronnie Belliard, who’s being showcased now in hopes somebody remembers he started for the ’06 champion Cardinals.”

No idea on Dunn’s double.

How can you?
How can you be middle of the pack in the NL in scoring, have a functional young pitching rotation and yet be on a pace for an utterly awful 113 loses?

Because we have the worst bullpen in creation and the worst defense seen in a long time… that’s how.

I think he is fundementally right thou

The team is lopsided and unbalanced. They do need to move on a few guys. Belli is just one.

Agreed on the lopsidedness....especially now.

It shouldn’t have been, if everyone at least performed to their previous levels. Getting Dunn started throwing it out of whack, but he was insurance for Nick and another big bat that was seen as the only big missing piece.
Management wasted ST and alternately panicked and was paralyzed right out of the gate.

And with tonight, the season is half over…

About that Zim HR

it’s in keeping with his hacking lately. He has a lot of weak groundouts, strikeouts or flyouts, and the occasional 2B or HR. He is swinging for the fences instead of focusing on solid line drives. It’s like he wants to be Adam Dunn without the walks. Despite this HR, his poor OPS reflects his new strategy. In short, I retract nothing! :P

So you guys were bashing me after Zim's HR

…and then he comes out and gets another GIDP. Ed: yes, I honestly think he is the type of guy that might just mail it in and stop trying to compete in producing a quality AB every single time.

1. He just got a massive contract.
2. The Nats are obviously going to finish in the cellar this year.

It’s the perfect recipe for a hot start (high OPS) to turn into hacking (lots of GIDP, fewer line drives, fewer walks, the occasional HR).

Id rather someone who can make better contact to drive in more runs… via singles rather than someone who Ks a lot.

Dont get me wrong – Dunn has come through but there have been also lot of games where he hasnt come up with the big hit. Its almost like we need a NJ with power.

Double play grounder right to Beimel.... Turns, looks

Guz not quick enough to the bag, but the throw wasn’t a good one anyway. Throw gets to Harris about ten feet behind the bag, didn’t even get the runner at first.

I am officially DONE with Guzman

Not to take any of the blame away from Beimel, but that was yet another example of Guzman’s complete and total lack of hustle and intensity in the field. So was his error in the previous inning, when he tried to backhand a ball he should easily have gotten in front of, missed it, and watched it bounce off his foot. Toss in his constant first pitch hacking…. I’ve just had it!

He should be moved. You need great defense up the middle. A la Rafael Belliard. Couldnt hit…but could flash the glove.

Manny: more disappointed in walks than the defense.

ZimmN didn’t have it tonight.

Happy with Burnett.

Manny looked like he’d been either crying or enraged while talking to his team. Maybe it’s the altitude, low humidity or suck factor getting to him.
