No Fire Sale
With all of this trade talk swirling around wouldn't it be better to hang for a greater chance of immediate success next year and success that we can sustain. Say if we do trade away NJ, Dunn (I know Rizzo said he wouldn't), Hammer, Guz then next year we are looking at a season a lot like this year.
I would definately say get rid of AK, Hammer, Beimel and take what you can get. But say we trade NJ, we have no replacement or heir apparent and the the FA market is not that great next year and NJ would be one of the best options as a free agent. LaRoche is the only younger 1B that is a FA next year unless we were to make a run at VMart (who wouldn't come here anyways).
The same goes for SS. We should have some money to spend with AK and D'Meat Hook off the books and we should spend that on relievers.
2010 Proposed Lineup
C- Flores, Nieves or bring Brian Schneider back
1B- Johnson
2B- Hernandez, Morse
SS- Guzman, Gonzalez
3B- Zimmerman
OF- Dukes, Dunn, Morgan, Maxwell, Bernadina
SP- Lannan, Zimmermann, Olsen, Martis, then take a run at a FA- Harden/Bedard/Wolf
RP- Strasburg, Stammen, Detwiler, Storen, Go after FAs Soriano, MGonzalez, Putz, Rodney, Grabow, maybe even Billy Wagner
I think this would be a team set up for immediate success, as well as a system full of young arms and talent for sustained success

Nick is only under contract through this season. Why on earth would he sign with the Nationals again? Let’s be honest with ourselves. If he’s not traded, the Nats will get nothing for him after the season. If he’s a type this or that free agent they’d get a draft pick…
It will be nice to have Kearns, Belliard and D. Young off the books though. It’s a shame Bowden signed Guzman for 8 million dollars next year. He’s clearly not able to play defense consistently anymore. The errors the last couple days should get him at least one day to sit and think.
I think the Nats will address the bullpen issues over the offseason.

Who else would NJ sign with?
The only squads that are going to be looking for a starting 1B are going to probably be Seattle and Pittsburgh, then maybe the Mets or the Giants.
Why would Nick stay here? He has been with us for 5 years and if we keep him through the deadline then I think he wouldn’t help but think that the Nats have been pretty damn loyal to him. Also he has signed two year deals with Nats twice before and a two year deal this year would probably be what both sides would be looking for. Furthermore, maybe he would stay here b/c we would have a squad that is competitive!
If we traded NJ and even got a draft pick then what is your solution at first? Put Casto or Morse there? Dunn? sign LaRoche, Branyan?

Just saying, if I’m Nick and I get decent offers from teams other than the Nationals in the offseason, I’m considering going elsewhere…especially if those teams have any shot at the playoffs. Nick knows this is a business…he said it himself in a Debbi Taylor interview. It’s not up to a blog to decide where he goes or who replaces him.
If I’m Rizzo, I move him. If you’re Rizzo, you don’t.

Ill be surprised if he stays
He’s been with us for 5 years, and despite being loyal to the club, I think he would like to win. He might see things improving, but with the way the team is playing he’d have to weighing his options for next season. If someone like the Mets (he likes NY) or a big team offered him a lot of money I wouldnt be surprised to see him take it.
Not to mention, this could be his last free agent deal in his career (if he signs a longer term contract) or at the very least his 2nd last. He’ll want to make sure he cashes in and gets as much as he can.
I dont deny that moving NJ causes major issues for us as a team. But Rizzo has a hard choice of letting him go for next to nothing.

Think the been with this club awhile idea might explain Guzman's issues...seeing your career come to an end with a few 100-loss seasons might not appeal to a veteran...

Guzman is either trying to force a trade, or trying to reduce his trade value to nothing
I can’t figure it out yet

One of my jobs at work is running a followspot.......
I have a reputation for being good, but it requires concentration and muscle cramping precision. I would not miss it if I never did it again.
Sometimes, I make it easier on myself because nobody would notice otherwise. Sometimes. my mind wanders in an awful show, but I get away with it because i have a pretty good autopilot reflex…. But, I’m not giving 100% and it’s usually when no one else is either.
I can imagine it’s the same with Guz, staring at a 100+ loss season.
