Some details in NJ, by way of Boswell (saw it first in NJ, haven't chased down the details yet).

Let me sum up the feeling here at FB.com...
PH**K!
Padilla walked into the Nats' clubhouse for the first time and said, "My God. I'm in heaven."
So far, just two notes in Nationals Journal...
…they cite a statement Rizzo made to WaPo columnist Thom Boswell. Dr. James “The Pitcher Butcher” Andrews confirms team doctors’ initial MRI assessment of a ligament tear, Tommy John surgery (elbow ligament replacement) likely necessary (team looking for a 3rd opinion first, but I can’t imagine it’ll be much different). The “bright side” is that TJ surgery apparently has an 85-90% success rate for pitchers coming back with their original level of stuff, much better than for labrum (shoulder) repairs, for instance.

Feel pretty bad about this but maybe its better to do it now.

Let's hope he comes back stronger...
…I know ACL repairs (knee ligament) are supposed to be 50% stronger than the original. I would certainly trade the streak for this not having happened. Ah, well…

Same here on the streak. How do you think this affects Strasberg?
On the one hand, we need Strasberg more than we did before now. Much as we like Lannan we can’t pass him off as an ace forever. On the other hand, this is another reminder of the inherent risk in plunking large sums of money on young live arms through free agency.
Yeah, I was thinking the same things...
…given our luck, everything means more spending and less pitching…

OK you just lost your number one prospect for a year or more... might be time to sign that Strasburg kid huh...
Strasburg, Zimmermann, Lannan, Balester, Martis, Detwiler, … I had such dreams…

It's possible
There is plenty about there for someone to step up…I guess this is why you stock up on young starters…
Padilla walked into the Nats' clubhouse for the first time and said, "My God. I'm in heaven."
Nah its just an opportunity
We’re quite stocked with some young arms with potential. It’ll be an opportunity for the guys like Martis, Baly and others to step up. Olsen is coming back too and I think he might be better for it as I figured he pitched hurt a bit.

We've been saying Bally for about 3 years now. If it happens it happens.
he gives up too many fly balls for my tastes.
Yea well...here is his chance
Otherwise he’s gone. The difference was – 3 years ago HE was it… now we’ve got lots of competition and options.

Bally's got his audition this year for me.
After that they’ve got to start thinking about going Clippardesque reliever with him.
It’s interesting but some of these starters could make the transition to the pen… be interested to know which ones could make it.

Bergie was a horrible flyballer when he started, too.
He seems to finally clicked in the ’pen, at least so far.

I wasnt about JD either
but sometimes control beats stuff. Maddux?

I'm not much about JD either.
Personally I like him but it’s smoke and mirrors. He couldn’t top 87 and he didn’t seem to have enough movement to pitch to contact during that 5 inning start.
I liked Chico (the pitcher) too, he's working his way back, and the way things are going there might be room for him...

Performance hasn't been there yet. He's got to show me he can make it up to Syracuse.
But I guess he’s still getting stronger from the injury.
I assume it's so far away I haven't really been following his stats even, just happy he's pitching...

Is it possible we don't develop these guys right and promote them too quickly?
Again it’s not just JZimm. It’s Patterson, Hill, Chico, and Zimm.
Is Mike Bacsik working?

Wow, This is terrible....
Not just for the Nationals but can you imagine being Zimm(n). Out for that long…
I feel so bad for the kid.
man, this really stinks
now we know why Rizzo likes to have lots of pitchers
I just dont see how this is anyones fault
I mean, they did baby the guy on pitch counts… its not like he is throwing 200 innings and going complete games. I just think it shows that pitchers can easily get hurt.

yea its tougher when we have no one to blame

This really sucks for the kid.
Like was mentioned above, the success rate is very high for this surgery.
He will be back
and turn into a star! But, it does damper my hopes for next season a bit.

This is unfortunate for Jordan Zimmerman...
but he may well come back from the surgery and recovery. Mariano Rivera, John Smoltz, Ryan Dempster, just to name a few, continued their careers in the years following their surgery.

Great quote…
How long were you out with the broken jaw (you had in college)? "Two months. I’m sure the jaw was probably worse than this. I mean, I couldn’t eat. At least I’ll be able to eat (with this). I guess the rehab’s not too bad. It just takes a long time to get it back up."
He's really a take it in stride kind of guy. He's positive and he'll be back.
But 2010 took a major hit in terms of fan interest.
We are an unlucky team
It seems much more common for this team to see a guy lost for a few seasons once he looks good than most other franchises.
