I heard Strasburg was going to be there, but just b/c its t-shirt Tuesday, haha. But seriously I wouldn’t expect him here until tomorrow to do a presser before the game, but it could happen tonight, but I haven’t heard anything.

I think he will pitch 1 or 2 innings in late September, just to put butts in the seats.

Won’t be in major or minor leagues this year. Will go to Florida and Spin Williams will see where he is and will pitch in FIL and maybe AFL. He’s in really good shape. Hasn’t pitched since May 28. Has been doing weights and long toss.

Cool thing about Jimenez's delivery...

…noticed it in the pregame. His glove bounces up near his face after his pitch in a sort of “self defense if I need it” move. All pitchers should think about that.

Jeff Francis tore his labrum late last year and is just now tossing a bit off the mound

He won’t pitch for us this year, and probably not until next June.

He may never be the same, but he was never a velocity guy. If he can get the feel, he could be a #3 or 4. We’ve got a couple studs on the rise, though, Chacin and Friedrich.

That would explain why I haven't heard much of him lately.

I thought he was interesting because he was the first pitcher I really remember succeeding at altitude. Ubaldo may be the second one.

by Chris Pendley on Aug 18, 2009 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Cookie's been succeeding at altitude for years

He missed a ton of time with near fatal blood clots, but in the post-humidor era, it seems the guys who do the best will be those who can throw hard sinkers for strikes, and other pitchers who can run impressive GB/FB ratios (which is part of why Marquis is doing well this year).

Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave

by Mondogarage on Aug 18, 2009 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I've always thought a stupid GB% would be one of the keys.

Really, I figured grounder power pitcher types would be great there, but on the other hand they’d be great anywhere.

Eric Berry for sending the guy who wins the Heisman spinning 720 degrees in the air at the podium - or for intercepting it and returning it to where it rightfully belongs

by Chris Pendley on Aug 18, 2009 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

True dat, but with the humidor, the sinker actually moves like a sinker should

Coors will always be a big park for doubles and triples, because the outfield is so huge. So we don’t just need sinker guys, but sinker guys who can accept having traffic on the basepaths.

The real key is having killer defense and stupid GB%, but it’s been working for a couple years. 2008 was an injury plagued season for most of the roster, and perhaps more of an aberration than 2007 was.

How much does OF defense matter with a park like that?

Eric Berry for sending the guy who wins the Heisman spinning 720 degrees in the air at the podium - or for intercepting it and returning it to where it rightfully belongs

by Chris Pendley on Aug 18, 2009 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

It matters a ton

Our infield is Gold Glove caliber all around (except for 3B), and we basically employ two CF types in Fowler and Gonzalez.

But with the humidor, HRs are far more “normal”. It’s just a huge ground to cover, though. So the ability to cutoff balls is very important.

Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave

by Mondogarage on Aug 18, 2009 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

That was what I thought.

Coors always seems like completely wide open spaces to me. (BTW, I was there for a game last year – got to watch Livan Hernandez get lit up like a Roman candle. Felt like old times. But the stadium has held up really well and still looks fantastic.)

The best part is...

He’s signed to a very affordable contract through 2014. As long as he stays healthy, he’s signed (including options) through his first or second FA year. He first was a key part of our 2007 stretch run.

Biggest problem is his pitch counts (and he walks a couple too many), but he’s thrown something like 20 quality starts in a row.

Buying out FA years are a big freaking deal. Good job on that.

Part of the reason I’m excited about the Strasburg era is that the contract itself (not the signing bonus) won’t take much work to live up to. Same goes for buying out FA seasons.

The downside of the Strasburg deal is this...

The Nats didn’t even buy out all his arbitration years.

But he’s a stud’s stud, man, I hope he ushers in a new era for you.

Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave

by Mondogarage on Aug 18, 2009 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

The first four years should be great, if he earns a raise in arbitration give it to him...

though some have speculated that he could perform his way out of DC’s price range…

And if he does, then there are two arb years to deal with and then he moves on.

If he’s within their price range, they’ll likely buy out the other arb years and year 1 or year 2 of FA if they’re smart. Similar to what they did with Zimmerman.
