quick question for Nationals fans
on the Cubs broadcast last night the Cubs announcers were talking about some of the things that Riggleman has done with the team in his short time in town. They talked about how he apparently has been very hands on and has spent time talking to the team after games to discuss the good and the bad.
my questions is after about a month and a half how do you guys feel about Jim Riggleman as your manager? Is he a guy that you would want to see them keep around next year?
thanks
---AC 00 00 00 - Believe
Good question.
I posted a poll of the same question, and though there weren’t too many responses, the general consensus is that he deserves a full year.
I think so, too; he’s turned the team around (more or less, we can’t be expecting a contender here) and the players seem to like him.
nope
the team has already said they are going to do an exhaustive search for the new manager. if, at the end of that process Riggleman is the most impressive candidate, i’ll eat my hat.
Riggs has been pretty good with the pen, and several on the team have spoken about the team meetings, etc. and of course, some fans have seen him out arguing with the umpires on an almost every night basis, and thinking that’s a good thing.
but he runs his team into WAY too many outs on the basepaths. i mean, he’s already run four suicide squeezes (only one successful) since the all-star break. there’s been two strike-em-out, throw-em-out douple plays for every hit-and-run that has worked. shoot, Monday Wil Nieves (who?) stole a base on a botched hit-and-run that Jason Kendall jsust flat dropped, he was probably so surprised to see Nieves running.
the fact that Nieves was indeed safe does not mean the play was successful.
it’s bad baseball to willingly run your team into the position of giving up outs on the basepaths, and yet he does it seemingly every night.
my other critique, and this is a “feel” type of thing and not meant to slam his personality, but he just does not inspire my confidence. he’s not a great speaker, and while he tries to be up-front and answer the question, when he gets on a roll the “old school” theories really just flow out, and I, being of the modern school of thought, just kinda cringe. so maybe it’s just me.
i know a lot of folks whose opinion i respect love the fact the team is winning more games with him at the helm. notice i said “winning more games” and not “playing better”. there’s a HUGE difference.
often there is a honeymoon period after a change in leadership. it think it’s that, regression to the mean, and Ryan Zimmerman hitting like he’s supposed to after going 56 games hitting .221/.293/.346 that has made more of a difference than who is filling out the lineup cards.

Hard to tell...
If it’s a case of Riggleman changing things or if it woke the the team up when they realized their play had resulted in Acta being fired. Personally I think Mike Rizzo has had more of an effect on the team’s improvement that Riggleman has. Unless Milledge really turns it around that trade is an absolute steal…
I’ve heard the same things as Dave out of the Nationals’ front office about their plans for an exhaustive Manager search after the season, and I’ve heard Mr. Rizzo stress that Riggleman was his personal choice as manager, but i’ve said for some time now that there’s bound to be a better candidate out there this offseason, and I think the Nationals will gave their fourth manager in 2010…

+1 from me.
Padilla walked into the Nats' clubhouse for the first time and said, "My God. I'm in heaven."
I'm kind of whatever on him.
I attribute the turnaround in part to simple luck reversal – look, this team isn’t good and nobody thought they were going to be good, but .280 ball for a full 85-90 games is pretty impressive. I expected somewhere in the .350-.400 range before the season started, and now I’m thinking .325-.375. So far they’re right in that window.
Would I want to keep him around? Eh. There are things that I like about him (out-of-game managing) and there are things that I don’t (in-game managing). I’d much, much rather see him as a bench coach – I think he’d excel there.

Well...
…He’s better than Manny with this club but I think my mother could out-manage Manny. Riggs basically helped get this team to where they should have been all along.
My stance is the exact same as with the GM search. Look at all candidates and pick the best one. If they think it’s Riggles, fine with me. Just no more experiments.
I think Tony LaRussa and Dave Duncan are ready for a new challenge.
That's kind of my point.
I don’t think he’ll make the team better than it is, though.

I know that we are building for the future...
and the starting pitching is young, but it will feel so good to see a veteran proven pitcher. Even though his stats havent been great this year( other than against the Nats) but this will be nice to see. “Mr. National” is back

WHAT JUST HAPPENED!
When that ball was hit, I thought about that play, but then realized there was no way it was going to happen. THAT WAS AWESOME!
Who taught Dunn how to do that? Double play by the Trained Donkey...

ED!
He may not be hitting well at the moment, but he’s been pretty good defensively.
Or at least better than you predicted.

No actual person...
Barrett came up with the alternative name The Pink Floyd Sound, after two Piedmont blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council, two names he’d seen on the notes of a Blind Boy Fuller album.

Can't expect for the same results in the top of the ninth without the six run bottom of the eighth
But it is worth noting that after Guzman’s three walks tonight, he’s now walked 55 in 59.1 innings. You can’t just give away runs like that, and while the bullpen is certainly tired, I can’t see not having someone up when he’s already allowed two in a game that wasn’t comlpetely out of hand and he’s in trouble again.
