Basic lineup tonight, with Bard and Alberto, and Big Something at 1B...
Mock, in a Do or Syracuse start against their new rookie sensation…
I would like something better than a close game in the Nats favour, please.

His numbers now mirror what he’s done the last two years there. .295/.375/.530 with 17 homers. I get the feeling that the reason the Bucs shipped him to Indianapolis was because he hadn’t played the field in about three months, either behind the plate or at first. He’s playing 1b regularly for Indy.

Knee problems. M's didn't want to use him defensively until he thought he was ready to catch
Of course, the holes they have in their lineup at the DH spot (Griffey and Sweeney) should have opened up a spot for him anyway.
by bluelineswinger on Aug 3, 2009 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, there are likely financial reasons why that hole exists.
Namely, they’re probably making money with Griffey at DH, even if he’s a shell of what he was.
Eric Berry for sending the guy who wins the Heisman spinning 720 degrees in the air at the podium - or for intercepting it and returning it to where it rightfully belongs
by Chris Pendley on Aug 3, 2009 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions
I won't argue that
They’re making money with Griffey DH’ing. They’re keeping themselves from having nothing but a sunk cost by keeping Johjima on the roster (see: Kearns, Austin, but slightly better).
Still, considering that they’ve been over .500 and in the race for most of the year, sending those two bats out there probably cost them a handful of wins. And we complain about the Nats thinking about money all the time………
by bluelineswinger on Aug 3, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, they're basically out of the race at this point barring a pretty substantial hot streak.
That Wilson/Snell trade wasn’t for this season. I’m not totally sure those guys have been the only reason why they’re out of the race (I suspect their bullpen and the giant sucking black hole at SS they’ve had most of the year), but it probably hasn’t helped.
Eric Berry for sending the guy who wins the Heisman spinning 720 degrees in the air at the podium - or for intercepting it and returning it to where it rightfully belongs
by Chris Pendley on Aug 3, 2009 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Oh... I'm certainly not saying that keeping Clement down is the whole reason they fell out of the race
I do believe it played a part, though. Honestly, I like what the M’s were able to do at the deadline themselves. I do think Clement ends up becoming a really good consistent bat at first base, though it won’t play nearly as well there as it would at catcher. Still, that fit with the offseason moves that the M’s made. Most importantly, it’s not only something that might work out for them in the future, but something that’s already worked in their favor. They went defense…. hardcore. See the additions of Endy Chavez and Franklin Gutierrez to the outfield in the offseason.
They capitalized, in my eyes, with a career year from Jarrod Washburn, whose BABIP just happens to still be under .250 right now. On the plus side, he’ll have a better defensive SS than he’s had behind him all season (Adam Everett). On the down side, he no longer has that outfield of Ichiro, Gutierrez, and (when he was healthy) Endy Chavez patrolling behind him. I see a major dropoff in the second half. Just a hunch.
by bluelineswinger on Aug 3, 2009 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions
With Washburn? Absolutely.
Some of his improvements are legitimate this season, but I don’t think he’ll maintain this level the rest of the season.
Also, remember that they have Ryan Langerhans patrolling LF (defense matters!), so the M’s OF defense is still in good shape. They’ve done a great job retooling – last year was kind of a disaster for them, but unlike the Nats, they really weren’t that far off.

The Mariners have to have one of the weirdest swings from year to year in three seasons I can recall
88-74 in 2007 when they were challenging for much of the year, but fell short.
61-101 last year
54-51 so far this year.
Talk about schizophrenic. Are they a 100 loss team or a solid team that’s going to finish over .500?
As for the Nats, they had so many injuries last season that I don’t think it was possible to get an accurate gauge on how far off they were from being at least decent. Admittedly, they were a little farther off than I would have guessed.

Given a choice between Clippard and Mock starting
I know who I’d choose. Again, though, I think Clippard’s found his niche. If they can find five starters who are solid enough to keep him in the bullpen, that’s fine. There’s no question, though, that if he were to pitch nearly as well as he’s pitched out of the bullpen in the rotation, he’d be a lot more valuable.
