First round draft pick race

To stimulate more fan interest in the Nats, I thought we might watch the race for next year's first round draft pick.

The Nats are still in first place with a .649 winning, or should I say losing  average, on track for a 105 game losing record. In 2nd place, 4 1/2 games back are the KC Royals with a .614 average. In 3rd place and closing fast, is none other than B-Orioles , 8 games back with a .588 average.  In 4th place, are the Pitt Pirates with a .586 average, 9 games back.

If both the Nats and the O's finish 1, 2 in this race, this will make MLB very happy since they said our area can't support two teams. I wonder if we could combine teams, but then 0 + 0 = 0.

If the Nats get first round pick next year, it will be 3 years in a row. Is this a new major league record? This might add even more interest in this last month of baseball.

Although Willie Harris has been stepping up lately, I’m going to have to stick with the Nats. I thought the Royals had a better shot when Morgan was in, but now that he’s gone I’m willing to bet on DC.

I agree

I think we’ve lost a bit of momentum. Sadly we might end up last again due to a horrific start. I still think the Nats should never have been in this position and there isnt a day im appalled at the record. While the Nats might get #1 next year in the draft, I was hopeing it could be avoided…this is a much better team than that.

The Nats picked 9th overall last year, not 1st.

that's not a bad list over the last 20 years or so

may have taken a few years for some players (Adrian Gonzalez), but overall thats not a list of players I’d sniff at. Seems like position players are still a better bet, though, at a glance.

oh yea... the pitchers never work out...

Personally, I’d like to NOT take Bryce Harper. There must be a proven college player who is nearly MLB ready…need a slugging 2B or SS.

you should take strasburg again

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this blog is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on our souls.

I dunno, I think at #1 you pick the best overall player. Plus Harper’s scouting report makes it sound like he’d be a great center or right fielder.

big difference on that list between the pitchers and hitters

When Floyd Bannister and Andy Benes are the best pitchers the record is not amazing.

14 pitchers and 4 saw an All Star game

4 saw at least one All star game. In other words, only 4 were amoung the best 15 to 20 best pitchers in the game at the all star break at least once and none are HOF’rs. That is not a strong record for the first overalll pick in the entire country. Sure most of these pitchers saw significant major league time, but so does nearly everyone drafted in the second and third rounds. I do not make the first pick in the country hoping for a guy who has the career of Tim Belcher, Ben Macdonald, Matt Anderson, or even Andy Benes.

But, the Nats HAD to take Strasburg. If they didn’t, almost every person who is a fan of the Nats would go nuts…

not me

I would have respected the balls it took not to take him.

+1 on not taking Harper

I hate to say it but for the first time in years, I’m ready for baseball season to be over. This franchise has fatigued me.

by ghostofwadelefler on Sep 1, 2009 8:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, why take the guy with the best bat since A-Rod? Oh yeah, and he’s a catcher. The Nats are nuts if they don’t take Harper. With him and Strassburg they have two of the 10-20 most valuable commodities in baseball.

Still the loving, adoptive father of Hector Sanchez. And who doesn't love switch-hitting catchers with power and patience?

Always pick the best player

Im just glad it will be a position player next year – which has far more chance of working out.

At this rate…we will finish last for another 7 years…so by then we should have a whole team full of #1 picks…

Sure. Pick the best player. If it’s Harper, fine. I assume we have scouts roaming around looking at all the talent in the country. But, at 16 years old, there’s a lot of crap that can still happen. He’s still a kid and could go through some dumbass phase and quit the game.

by ROSCOEtheNATSfan on Sep 2, 2009 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dont disagree…he could easily develop a case of the Dukes.

He also is starting to ‘come back to the pack’ aparrently – i read something that he wasnt hitting as well recently…or something.

If there was a gun middle infielder…Id take him in a flash. But we really should be looking to take the best hitter.

There’s an awful lot of evidence out there, both anecdotal and concrete, that suggests otherwise.

Besides, I’m sure someone out there was saying pretty much the same thing when LeBron James graced the cover of SI in high school.

If Rizzo and the scouts believe Harper’s the best player, let’s take him. Remember all the people screaming that Strasburg’s never pitched against pro hitters? This kid’s never played against college talent. He’s always been great according to all the awards…so maybe he is the best.

There was buzz last year at this time for only one player and the Nats took him.

In Rizzo I Trust.

+1 on trusting Rizzo

the man is a scout to the core… he knows…

this race is all but over and we won!!!!!

Yipee!!! Harper is a Nat for sure. I think he will turn into an all star catcher in about 5 years (2015). So we should draft him for sure.
