Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

All The Adam Dunn That's Fit To Print...Washington Nationals' Slugger In The New York Times.

Two-thirds of the Sunday New York Times' sports column written by Benjamin Hoffman, which is entitled, "Dunn Keeps Swinging Despite Detractors", is dedicated to Washington Nationals' first baseman Adam Dunn and his attempt to hit 40 HR's for the sixth consecutive season, which would tie him with A-Rod and Sammy Sosa behind only Babe Ruth whose seven-straight 40 HR seasons from 1926 - 1932 are still the industry standard. Mr. Hoffman seems somewhat surprised to find that Dunn, who has 37 HR's with 19 games left on the schedule, has not only reached base more than Ichiro in '09, but has also, thus far, posted the highest AVG (.282 through Sunday) and OBP (.410 in 142 G) of the 6'6'', 240lb+, left-handed hitting 29-year-old's 9-year career...

Who said something about an extension? When's Chris Marrero going to be ready?

More on Adam Dunn and the NY Times' feature after the JUMP...

Star-divide

Asked by Mr. Hoffman what he thought about approaching a record that places him second behind only Babe Ruth and tied with "legendary" hitters like A-Rod and Sosa, Dunn says that he thinks, "That kind of stuff is probably a lot more meaningful when you look back on your career." What Adam Dunn is concerned with now, according to Mr. Hoffman, is, "...making a winner out of the struggling Nationals."

Mr. Hoffman's also sure to make mention of the two requisite Adam Dunn-isms that have come to be included in every article about the big slugger over the years, the gaudy strikeout totals (a team-leading 162 in 142 '09 games) and the accusations of laziness which began with Toronto Blue Jays' GM J.P. Ricciardi, who claimed on a radio show, as recounted in an article by National Post.com writer John Lott entitled, "Ricciardi trashes Dunn on radio show", that Dunn "lacked passion" for the game and went on to tell the a caller to the show that the Jays had looked into Dunn:

""Do you know the guy doesn’t really like baseball that much?...Do you know the guy doesn’t have a passion to play the game that much? How much do you know about the player?...There’s a reason why you’re attracted to some players and there’s a reason why you’re not attracted to some players. I don’t think you’d be very happy if we brought Adam Dunn here…We’ve done our homework on guys like Adam Dunn and there’s a reason why we don’t want Adam Dunn. I don’t want to get into specifics.'"

Of course, in a story that got much less press than the first, apparently baseless accusations, Mr. Ricciardi was later forced to admit, in his own words, "I don't even know Adam Dunn," but much like the story of Dunn's involvement with the "Natinals" jerseys this year, the follow-up piece rarely receives as much attention, so even this last offseason, the rumors of Dunn's alleged lack of passion were cited when he found himself with far fewer offers than he imagined on the free agent market.

Will Dunn remember that the Nationals did step up with an offer when he had few others when his contract is up next year? Will the Nationals seek an extension beforehand? With Dunn due to make $12M in 2010, what would the Nationals have to offer to convince "The Big Opposite Field" to stay in DC? Can Adam Dunn, Ryan Zimmerman and Stephen Strasburg become the nucleus of the mythical "First Great Nationals"? Or will he turn his hard work hitting HR's while the Nationals' stayed in the cellar into the kind of deal Alfonso Soriano left town with?

Dunn = ok

Ive been impressed with the big guy and his power has defineitly brought protection to guys like Zim in the line up. It takes the pressure off and gives guys like Dukes and Hammer the ability to swing and know that it’s not all up to them. I would like to see Dunn stay but only for another 2 seasons after the next one. By then Marrero or another long term option should be looked at (realistically would he be ready for 2011?).

While much has been made of Big Reds defense – his 1B has been improving and if he puts the work in he’ll get there.

Ive also liked his personality – the guy seems to have a benfit to the others…all good things.

I've been shocked not to read about Dunn's fielding gaffes at 1B in every game summary...

I expected to be horrified as yet another game turned on “an RBI double past the stationary Donkey” or “the game winner scored on Dunn’s dribbled throw to the plate….”

So, Dunn through 2012?…………… Heck yeah….

This is not your WBC Adam Dunn at first...

With 3/4 of a year to practice he’s become serviceable enough at first to delay his transition to steady batter a few more seasons…Happy to have been wrong about his D, but I still miss Nick Johnson…

Like the fangraphs article on Guz at 2B improving the team by subtraction at SS.....

Moving Dunn out of LF the outfield had to happen. It was one player or the other and Dunn has improved the offence…….

Holy canolli batman… After the WBC all of us cringed at the thought of Dunn at 1b. Now, heck he ain’t half bad at all. He’s even learning to range out to his right for a ball now and than. I think being 6’6" also makes him a big target for in coming balls to 1st and his reaction action it’s bad either. If you look at his bad and think about what people are saying about Marrero you have to feel good about Dunn as a future piece of the puzzle.

"you have to feel good about Dunn as a future piece of the puzzle."

Now the ? is, how does Dunn feel aboot DC? He stated he wanted to play for a winner this winter, now what are the chances of Los Nationals competing while Dunn’s still a viable NL player????

Dunn is a nice guy, but the numbers on fangraphs do not show much improvement with the glove.

Among the 34 players that have played 350 innings at 1B this season in the majors, Dunn is dead last in UZR/150 at -17.4. Statistically his UZR/150 at first is 33 runs worse than the best guy (Ishakawa of the giants). He is 6 runs worse than DH Giambi when playing first. 13 runs worse than Billy Butler who has played the position less and is considered by most to be a DH. The fourth worst firstbasemen in baseball is ~11.5 runs better than Dunn (ie 31st best guy is 11.5 runs better) . that gap is bigger than the 3 worst guy and the second best guy. So the gap in performance between Dunn the worst guy and the 4th to worst guy is as big as the gap in performance between the second best and 31st best players. Dunn is the worst regular defensive player in baseball defensively and noone even comes close to his league in badness. Just because he does not make error after error does not mean he is any good. His badness transcends the boxscore!

in 1296 innings at firstbase in his career his UZR/150 is -14.0

I looked around and could find no one worse for his career than Dunn at first base with 1000 innings minimum at any position.
