Nationals News: Cliff Lee vs. Garrett Mock... Doesn't Seem Fair Edition

Nationals News

Former Nationals Dmitri Young spoke with Chico Harlan, and it sounds like he's getting ready to retire.

In another move away from the Jim Bowden era, the Nationals are getting close to fully reestablishing themselves in Latin America.

The Nationals may not have a great record, but Josh Willingham thinks they can compete with anyone.

The Cristian-Guzman-to-Second debate has received a lot of attention lately, and here's some more.

Marco Estrada, who only went 2 1/3 innings in his start on Saturday, isn't likely to keep his spot in the rotation.

Star-divide

With many September callups, Jim Riggleman is forced to choose which pitchers will get the start.

September is much less stressful when you don't have to worry about the playoff race.

Chico Harlan has assembled a list of former Nationals, and how they're doing with their new teams.

Fresh face Ian Desmond got his first start at second base, though he's played shortstop for nearly all of his career.

Scott Olsen has begun his rehab assignment in Viera, Florida. He should be ready to go by next year.

Non-Nationals News

Ichiro Suzuki's has become the first player in baseball history to have 200 hits in nine straight seasons.

Alex Rodriguez will not be punished after MLB completed its investigation of his statements about performance-enhancing drugs.

Joe Torre, Derek Jeter's former manager, congratulated him on become all-time hit king of the Yankees.

Tim Lincecum is back, and he's pitching tonight! Woo!

July 3, 2005: Nats reach 50 wins, with only 31 losses.

August 9, 2006: Nats reach 50 wins, with 63 losses (more than double the 2005 loss total).

August 4, 2007: Nats reach 50 wins, with 60 losses.

August 29, 2008: Nats reach 50 wins, with 85 losses.

September 13, 2009: Nats reach 50 wins, with 93 losses (exacly three times as many losses as in 2005).

My prediction: In 2010, Nats will reach 50 wins before August 15.

''...we were tied for first place for the wild card, and we can't have September call-ups. We couldn't do any trades. They didn't want us to win.''

Uhhh...this must be a part of the Plan we just don't understand...

Stan says it's going to take just a liiiiiittle longer........ Trust him...

That’s pretty gruesome when you see the dates attached…. I hope the upward trend happens a bit faster.

No, please guys get back on the bus. Come back home to DC.

Remember this is the nation’s capital city. We have cherry trees and Ovechkin in the winter. We can’t forget the National Galley of Art, nice place, really! Smithsonians in general. Everybody speaks english, too! Well, except in Adams Morgan where they speak Spanish and I guess down Embassy Row you’ve got a different language a block. IT’S AN INTERNATIONAL CITY not unlike Montreal. Except that it’s warming and oh crap, I love Montreal so I can’t knock it down. I made my plea. Come back home soon…!!!

While Mike Rizzo surprised many folks by having the interim tag lifted and becoming the team’s permanent general manager, it would be much more shocking than that for Riggleman to get the managing job full time. Nats president Stan Kasten said in a phone interview that Riggleman’s under consideration for the job. However, baseball people consider him getting it to be a major long shot (though Kasten pointed out that reports and perceptions about the Nats haven’t always turned out to be exactly on the money). Rizzo will want to put his own stamp on the situation with his own choice. Riggleman, fairly or not, has come to be viewed as a solid interim guy while managing baseball’s worst two teams two years running (he took over on an interim basis in Seattle in 2008), and Rizzo is almost sure to try to identify someone seen as a more a inspirational choice. It will be interesting to see whether Rizzo goes back to his Diamondback roots to find a manager (Buck Showalter and Chip Hale are names from his past, but there’s no inkling he and Showalter are especially close). So far the rumor mill has been incredibly scarce on the whole score.

Agree it might not be Riggles

But no idea who it could be…

Padilla walked into the Nats' clubhouse for the first time and said, "My God. I'm in heaven."

Chip Hale, huh?......... Easy to spell and easy to make fun of...... Perfect!

Like the son of another Skipper, Alan Hale Jr…. Imagine the laughter…
