Midday Reading:

Remember this? Last Week Yahoo!Sports.com's 'Duk checked in with the Washington Nationals' year in review...

• Walk Toward The Light: Your 2009 Washington Nationals - Big League Stew - MLB - Yahoo! Sports - 'Duk

Like 2008's Nail in the Coffin series, 2009's Walk Toward The Light aims to memorialize the eliminated teams that are gone and will likely be forgotten.

Now Deadspin.com gives us their look at the '09 Nationals...

• DEADSPIN: "The 2009 Washington Nationals: A Season Of Bigger Failure"

"Despite appearances, the New York Mets are not baseball's worst team. That honor belongs to the Washington Nationals, a organization whose legendary incompetence should be memorialized on the marble arches of the great city that wishes they played elsewhere."

All the losing is taking its toll...

• Washington Post - Nationals Journal - En Route to New York - Chico Harlan

(ed. note - "I think Mr. Harlan may have finally lost it...the losing's just too much. This is Mr. Harlan's response to DC Manager Jim Riggleman describing new catcher Jamie Burke as a 'catch-and-throw-type of guy'...")

"Yes yes, I'm getting carried away here, but cut me a break, I'm just a hands-on-the-keyboard type of writer. Among other designations you probably don't want as a baseball player:

*"He's a swing-the-bat type of middle infielder."

* "He's a throw-the-ball type of reliever."

* "He's an owns-a-bat type of bench player."

* "They're a take-the-field type of team."

(ed. note - "The Washington Nationals are 4-8 against the NY Mets in '09 with 6 games left on the 2009 schedule between the 3rd and 4th place teams in the NL East. If Washington can take 5 of 6 they can tie the season series, but they'll need 6 of 6 to guarantee a win....")

So, Rizzo said...

…on the pregame show that Orr is going to the FL instructional league to learn how to be a catcher. Then he can be the emergency catcher next year as well as backup infielder/outfielder. Plus, didn’t he pitch a couple times in Syracuse?

Good for Orr to make himself useful.....

from the Times...

Class AAA Syracuse manager Tim Foli, who is with the Nats this month as an extra coach, thought of the idea earlier this week and mentioned it to GM Mike Rizzo, who approached Orr with the idea. The utility infielder, who has played seven positions in a professional game (everywhere but first base and catcher) could eventually cross No. 8 off his list.

Other news: Wil Nieves said his hamstring injury isn’t as serious as originally feared—it’s on the lower part of his hamstring, and he could return as soon as Tuesday. Austin Kearns, however, isn’t likely to return. The outfielder, who’s been out most of the second half after getting debris removed from the base of his right thumb, is only doing some basic exercises gripping a bat. Kearns, who has a $10 million option for 2010, has likely seen the end of his time in Washington.

I don't recall...... a guy singing to tracks...

Carl Thomas……..Carl Thomas has always been as cool as the winds blowing in his native Chicago. With musical influences like Marvin Gaye, Ray Parker Jr., Donna Hathaway and Nat "King" Cole, Thomas brings a classic style to his soulful voice. His platinum selling debut album Emotional, reached the top of the charts with singles like "I Wish", "Summer Rain", and "Emotional." Since then, Thomas released the certified gold album Let’s Talk About It, and in 2006 was nominated for a Grammy for the song, "Everyday" from Tyler Perry’s Family Reunion.
