Nationals News: Still One Away Edition
Nationals News:
FJB runs down the list of things we should pay attention to in the last few weeks.
Thomas Boswell penned a long, interesting article discussing Jim Riggleman's future with the Nationals.
If the Nats lose tonight, they will become Jim Riggleman's third 100-loss team (though he only managed one of those through the entire season).
The Nationals have two of the top 20 players in the Gulf Coast League, according to Baseball America.
OMG points out that the Nats are on pace for 1.8 million in attendance this year, not quite the bottom of the list but too close for comfort.
Chico Harlan's gamer from last night is fun to read, for the first time in a long time.
NationalsPride recommends The Wrecking Crew of '33, a book about the last time a DC baseball team was really good... 76 years ago.
Center Field Gate is unhappy with the effort the Nationals have been putting forth, particularly in Tuesday's 2-14 loss to the Dodgers.
Jim Riggleman is an incurable optimist.
Ryan Zimmerman has been impressed by the September callups.
Back in February, it was thought that Orlando Hudson had failed a physical taken for the Nats, but he's now saying that there was no such physical.
Cristian Guzman will not be playing tonight after wearing out his arm committing errors.
Non-Nationals News
Bobby Cox is going to be sticking around for one more year in Atlanta, making 2010 his final season.
Ronnie Belliard has been on fire since being traded to the Dodgers, at least partially due to his new surroundings. I have to wonder how many other Nats players are stars languishing in the mediocrity of Natstown.
Despite being in the playoff hunt (barely) the San Francisco Giants have an offense about as capable as last year's Nationals.
Milton Bradley has formally apologized to the Cubs, and will accept his suspension.
Brad Lidge blew another save. Go Marlins!

This is worth reiterating from Chico.... Sean and Saul: Heroes of the Bullpen
“They entered the bottom of the ninth tied only because relievers Sean Burnett and Saul Rivera retired Los Angeles’s 3-4-5 hitters with the bases loaded, no outs.”
Mezza: ''Are we there yet?'' ...Roscoe: "In baseball hell? Yes we are."
"I did not want to take Pete Orr's bat out of the lineup."
Who here thought Sa-ool would get through that jam?
Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

I had faith in his magical GROUNDERZ power!
And it got us, er, two line-drive outs?

Not me..... I thought Riggles made a huge mistake and gave up again, pulling Burnett and going with the RHP matchup (Saul has a .300+ BA against RHB)...
Then, I scanned the rest of the bullpen….. No hope rewarded!!!

I could hear Dibs shaking his head…. Carpenter too! But Riggles sometimes gets it right.
Padilla walked into the Nats' clubhouse for the first time and said, "My God. I'm in heaven."
Funny stuff...

Quinn's a keeper......
Riggler is not…….
“Riggleman indicated that Guzman would need a short rest to deal with the injury, which has been bothering him for the last month.”
Too bad Guz had to play through injury because THERE WAS NO ONE ELSE TO PLAY
SHORTSTOP!!!!!

Hmmm... maybe we can convert that kid who played right field the other day to a SS.
Can’t be that much different, right? I hear he’s athletic.
Friend of Dukes and Desmond #3
Right,......catching the ball, throwing the ball.....it's all the same.
I hear the kid played CF in high school…..but yeah, we could try him out at short…
Smithers, I want that man eviscerated and roasted on a spit…
