Nationals News:

News about teams recently swept by the Padres:

John Lannan has been nominated for the Clemente Award for his work with sick children at the Children's Inn. If you don't know who Roberto Clemente is, now is the time to learn -- he was an amazing player, and more importantly, an amazing person.

More bad news on the young pitching front: Craig Stammen has been experiencing "elbow soreness." Here's what he had to say: "I don't really know what's going on. It's just painful. It doesn't feel good. It's kind of something that's built up over the course of the whole year. It's something I've pretty much dealt with over the course of the whole season. It's just kind of time to get it checked out right now." Now where have I heard that before... oh yeah... great.

The Nationals are starting a water taxi service to their games,  taking fans from Alexandria to the game for just a few bucks.

Star-divide

Down at Syracuse, Shairon Martis pitched seven innings, allowing just one run, and Logan Kensing earned the save when Syracuse beat Lehigh Valley 1-0.

Nats320 continues Negro League week with an interview with Dr. Raymond Doswell, curator of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

Against the Padres, the Nats hit .172 and ended with a 2-7 record on the road trip.

The trade for Ronnie Belliard has been completed, with Victor Garate becoming the "player to be named later."

Mike Rizzo is pretty hot on Class A shortstop Danny Espinosa.

The GCL Nationals defeated the GCL Marlins, winning game 1 of a three game GCL championship series.

FJB says Elijah Dukes has been a disappointment, and may not be back next season.

DC Sports Plus takes a look at first basemen for 2010.

News about teams not recently swept by the Padres:

Curt Schilling may or may not be interested in running for the Senate seat left vacant by Senator Edward Kennedy. He said some pretty funny things in that article, and admits his "filter" may need a tuneup, so politics may not be for him.

Diamondbacks pitcher Jon Garland played a game against the Dodgers on Monday, was traded to the Dodgers later that night, and played against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. At least he didn't have a long plane ride.

News about things only tangentially related:

MLBTR has assembled a list of players currently projecting as Type A free agents. If you look carefully, you'll notice that none of them play for the home team.

The Washington Post has been dishing dirt on the Redskins all week, and some of the stuff has been pretty ridiculous. The reasons to hate Dan Snyder are endless.

The Dodgers-Diamondbacks game was interrupted by a remote control airplane, which was then torn apart by Augie Ojeda.

Dang Quinn...that's a ton of travel day reading.

I saw this on the twitter…a Harrisburg pitcher is in the running for the good ERA award.

http://minors.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/09/theyre_real_and_theyre_spectac.html

The Minor League regular season is down to its final days, finishing up on Sunday and Monday. While there are countless races to look at — playoffs, home run titles (Mitch Jones has a slim one-homer lead in that one) — but the one I want to talk about today is the overall ERA title.

That winner gets the Most Spectacular Pitcher Award, handed out officially at the Triple-A Championship Game (the game formerly known as the Bricktown Showdown). Here are the top three in ERA among full-season pitchers:

Bradley Meyers, Harrisburg (Nationals) 1.65
Travis Wood, Louisville (Reds) 1.77
Madison Bumgarner, Connecticut (Giants) 1.86

Hah, yeah, I finally tried the clipping tool and it's AWESOME!

Good link about Meyers. I have to admit, this is the first I’ve heard of him, but it looks like he’s definitely a guy to keep an eye on. And he’s not even 24!

More bad signs for Mr. Riggles...

Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

Thought this was interesting, goes with my prediction that there will be someone more impressive in the offseason...
Given the Nationals’ horrid television and radio ratings and disappointing attendance, does it have to be a marquee name?

“Not to me,” Rizzo says. “If it’s marquee, fine. And if it’s a hidden gem that only we know about, that’s fine, too. Nobody knew Don Wakamatsu before Seattle hired him this year, and look at the job he’s done. We’re going to get the best fit we can for the organization to take us into the future.”

He would go with the guy who aced Riggles at Seattle.

That shows me Rizzo may have somebody in mind…and he’s not named Riggles. Come on Davey Johnson. Please un-retire for us.

Harder to pick than a broken nose…

Padilla walked into the Nats' clubhouse for the first time and said, "My God. I'm in heaven."

That's what I'm talkin' aboot.

I’ll take Gibson as long as he pumps his arm after every win. I think after this many years in and around big league games…playing under Sparky Anderson and Lasorda. BUT…I think the D-Backs may sign him up before anybody else can.

If you don’t know who Roberto Clemente is

WHAT? Are you serious? There are people out there who don’t know who Roberto Clemente is? Really?
