Nationals News: Homecoming Edition

News about the home team:

CBSSports has quite a few thoughts about the Riggleman situation, and whether he'll be back next year.

Craig Stammen had an MRI on his right elbow yesterday, and the results are expected today.

Beyond the Box Score is all but sure that the Nats will lock down the first pick next year.

MLB.com's writeup of yesterday's game has some interesting quotes by manager Jim Riggleman.

Although the Washington Nationals are at least a few seasons from a championship, the Gulf Coast League Nationals won one of their own yesterday.

Star-divide

Nationals Pride looks back on the Jon Rauch trade.

The Chiefs have a pretty good game coming up tonight, pitting Ross Detwiler against Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Nationals minor leaguers Chris Marrero and Danny Espinosa were named to the Carolina League All-Star team.

J.P. Ramirez is a first year minor leaguer in the Nationals' system, and he has been blogging about his experiences. Pretty cool stuff: part 1, part 2 and part 3.

The Vermont Lake Monsters, short-season Class A affiliates of the Nationals, have some pretty interesting commercials.

Pitchers Craig Stammen and J.D. Martin have volunteered to participate in a Modell's shopping spree. Huh, and I thought Modell's had gone bankrupt...

The Harrisburg Senators have major plans to renovate their stadium, and have played their last game at the 'old' stadium.

Nationals Pride correlates the success of the Nationals with the success of Nyjer Morgan.

News about the not home team:

The Post's Baseball Insider wonders whether the National League's hitting is really that bad.

I don't much care for the Dodgers, but I certainly like Vin Scully, and now he's officially the most verbose announcer. Our own Bob Carpenter finished second in words-per-inning of two man booths.

Next time you think you've lost your World Series ring, ask the janitor!

Ernie Harwell, a hall of famer for broadcasting, has incurable cancer. :(

Ken Griffey, Jr. has said that he's open to a return to the Mariners next season. This comes as a surprise to me; I had assumed the Mariners were just letting him return to retire as a Mariner. Please, Griffey, I like you -- don't become the next Favre.

Baseball fines Papelbon $5,000

He got a ball called on him for taking too long… I didn’t even know that could happen.

It's in the rulebook...

…I think there’s an analogous one for batters, though both are honored more in the breach (the radio guys’ pet peeve is batters stepping out and dilly-dallying when there’s no one on base).

southpaw Victor Garate, who has just been called up to the big club and, provided he arrives in time, will be in the bullpen tonight wearing number 56.

Let's see:

A) Home run by first batter he faces?
B) Walks the first batter he faces?
C) Comes on with bases loaded to face a lefty, walks in run?
D) Successful first appearance, retires batter in a Lefty vs Lefty matchup?
E) Not even going to pitch?

I thought my list of options was mean-spirited...
