Washington Nationals Wanted Aroldis Chapman....
According to Washington Post writer Dave Sheinin's Nationals Journal post entitled, "Nats were 'in it to the end' with Chapman", the Washington Nationals offered Aroldis Chapman more than $20 million dollars because DC GM Mike Rizzo liked what he saw from the 22-year-old left-hander:
"'We had a private workout with him. [General manager] Mike [Rizzo] liked him as much as any young lefthander he's ever seen,' said Kasten."
If Rizzo liked Chapman that much should the Nationals have gone as high as $30M?

if the Nats put a fair offer in and the Reds decided to trump everyone, so be it. i’ve never really been sold on this idea, contrary to the prevailing opinion here. i’m just really wary of turning over all-star money to a player that hasn’t competed at the highest level. and yes, i do consider the Big West higher competition than what Chapman has had to face thus far.

Like they say in the Post article...
I was enamored with the idea of a 100 mph lefty and righty at the top of the Nats’ rotation…At least I got to see Strasburg and follow his stats before the draft…Chapmam was a complete mystery….Glad to see that Rizzo liked him as much as I imagined…

yeah, but a 100-mph throwing lefty
that has ZERO innings facing legitimate competition. he’s 22 (at least) and has been beating up on players his age and younger with very little quality control. i’m all for scouting and signing potential, but that’s all this is at this point. and the Reds are going to expect him to be in the rotation from just about day one with the money they laid out.

Agree completely...though I've heard varying opinions on the quality of competition in Cuba...
Chapmam did about as well in the WBC as Strasburg did in the Olympics or College WS, but every scout in baseball saw Stras as opposed to Chapman who had the bullpen sessions and private workouts…can’t blame DC for not going to $30 for this much of a question mark…btw XM said he turns 22 in February…WTF?

There is a bigger picture I see in this Chapman BS...
1) The Nats pursued him and brought money to the table…
2) The Nats had a private workout with him and no one know about it…
3) The Nats are being aggressive in the free agency market and they’re being smart about it….
Rizzo/Kasten and Co… are getting the job done but not tipping they’re hand like a certain side ways talking, segway riding ex-Gmer type person we all know. This is all good news to me. We don’t need to know how the process is being done. We just want to the process to work and we want to watchable team on the field at National Park, eh…. Long live Mike Rizzo…I believe !!!

+ All your points though, Berndaddy...
I had no inside info that the Nats were really involved in the chase for Chapman, I just thought it was a good move for the team, and they were in fact in it…
As much as I like inside info, the fact the Nationals, for the most part slipped under the radar in this pursuit is a vast improvement over previous years…

It's refreshing isn't it?
That’s the way most business is done. IE: Teixera to the Yanks. Bamm!!! We got hit over the head when that knowledge dropped last year and didn’t see it coming…
You’re right though Ed, we’d all like to know what’s going down, but the absence of knowing isn’t that bad giving the fact that that makes the organization look like real business partners. I like, I like a lot !!!

i don't really know if $30M over 5 years is all start money
i am guessing most all stars make more than $6M a year. $30M over 5 years is really stop gap money, and the Reds are taking a risk on huge potential upside.
Bailey, Chapman, Cueto, Leake, and Volquez; the future is so bright I have to wear sunglasses.

I knew Ratzo the singer. He sang for Switchblade the 80's rockabilly band here in DC..
He had a 6" to 7" pompadour hair cut. Very good band. Stuart the guitartist is one of my all time favs and Johnny Castle oozed cool from the bassman’s spot.
Note to Mamba: What’s up with all the Nats fan hating? Is you venom going to you brain? Most of us had no real interest in the Cuban. !Lo siento la Mamba! You words are just black on white, but you are funny.

I want to know why the Mamba thinks this offsseason is a disaster...
And who we should have signed instead… I mean – who are the alternatives in the market? I think most NATS fans can appreciate that it will take a LONG time to UNDO the damage of BOWDEN.

Noice
Althou I was a little sad when he said “I wish I never played during this era”… this will clearly haunt him for the rest of his life. Some will justly say ‘so it should’ but I think its a pretty good example for athletes not to take PEDs.

i suppose...
i could have waited until after seeinghim perform on TV tonight. i don’t think he did himself any favors. by saying that he took the steroids for the health benefit, but not acknowledging that those benefits enhanced his performance, undermines at least his intelligence, if not sincerity.

I havent seen it but if he said that...its disappointing.
I thought your blog raised an interesting issue about whether the league (and the HOF) and supports can and will ignore an entire era of players for their deeds.
I think that its a difficult question that baseball has found itself in.

And next up on the too Expensive for the Lerners “NO Pay to Play” list is the
O Dog…

What are u smoking?
Strasburg = highest ever deal to a draftee
Ryan Zimm = long term deal
Marquis = good deal (but not cheap)
Pudge, Dunn and others are a good supporting arguement that the Lerners have turned the corner (and arguably due to a new and competent GM). In Rizzo I trust.
Go whinge with the Mets fans. They seem to be upset these days that they havent signed another $200m in talent for their DL.

=====
Mamba wouldn’t say much of anything if:…………..
-the DEADgnats fans wouldn’t get drunk and deluded with koolade after every win….
- the DEADgnats fans wouldn’t throw out the .500 rants after every win…..
-the DEADgnats fans had been willing to accept the truth about an incompetent BUM like ACTA long before the season was DEAD from his putting the team into a coma.
- the DEADgnats fans wouldn’t go GA GA after every free agent signing of middle/bottom tier free agents that were not sought after by any of the big boy contenders…..or express the endless the delusion they have a chance to sign top tier free agents that the contenders are willing to pay for….

well, I dont think many Nats fans are all that deluded. I think you would be hard pressed to find many who think this team will do better than 500. But given that is a genourous improvement on last season(s) performances, I few of us are seeing more signs to be optimistic. In relation to Acta, I along with many others felt that he was pretty bad from the beginning of 2009. In 2008, I felt he was delt more of a bad hand with injuries – but it was still a terrible performance. As for the free agents – most of the comments have been not deluded but optimistic (small, but important differences). Chapman was very much down to the wire and given most commentators consider that the Reds (a non-big boy team), overpaid – I think most fans are not disappointed they didnt get Chapman. Other than that…who are the top tier free agents we went for and missed? We got Marquis…who was the 2nd best pitcher on the market.

I must be smoking the cow pies you're slinging....
1. Strasburg was a Draftee…no outside competition to eliminate the Lerners with offers they would NEVER have matched… $15 mil over 4 is mlb chump change..
2. Zimmerman was an inside deal signed before the outside comp was allowed to compete for him…As the franchise poster boy -it would have gotten the stadium burned down if they had lost him over money.
3. Marquis has a “psycho” late season collapse rep that scared off most of the contenders…..Lucky Lerners got em cheap.
4. Ol’ Pudge was overpaid (but at a mlb chump change amount) …….as a middle tier FA over 2..
5. Dunn is an idiot ….possibly costing himself a long shot at the HOF by not being where he belongs in the AL as a top DH….. I gotta assume Bowden must have had photos to get him to sign to play in Gnatstown…
by The Mamba on Jan 12, 2010 1:53 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
oh contrare
1) If the Lerners were cheap… it still doesnt explain the record deal. They could have held out for slot and gone for another draft pick.
2) Still indicates that the Lerners are not cheap.
3) Marquis is still a decent pitcher and the Nats beat off quite a few others. He was the 2nd best established starter on the market behind Lackey.
4) A chump who is over paid does not equal cheap.
5) Dunn is a top tier player (batting wise at least) and a good deal.
