Washington Nationals Interested in Randy Winn? For What Role?
MLBTradeRumors.com reports that the Nats might be interested in 36-year old OF Randy Winn. Winn is still a terrific defensive player, but his slash stats last season were Guzmanian at .262/.318/.353 in 528 ABs. There's already speculation about what Winn's role might be with the Nationals.
My take: he'd be fine as a veteran 4th OF and defensive replacement, but not at the expense of Dukes' development, or the oushing of Willingham out the door. Something tells me Winn's still looking for a FT roll, though.
The Nats have a decent offense, but if Winn were to play full-time over either Dukes or Willingham, it would leave a hole in the batting order that his defense simply couldn't make up for. This lineup just can't make up for two sub-.320 OBPs, and that's what Winn and Guzman bring to the table.

Will the Nationals actually trade Willingham? That's the only way I see this making sense...
I want to see Dukes given every chance to succeed this year… can Hammer, Nyjer Morgan and Elijah Dukes compete with the rest of the NL East’s outfields?

defensively, no. not even with Morgan full-time
offensively, it’s up to Dukes. if he lives up to the promise, then the Nats are in business. if he flounders, all bets are off.
but you’re right, i think the only way the Nats actually go through with this is if they plan on Winn playing full-time and they move Hammer for pitching/middle infield. i’m not overly opposed to moving Willingham, as his defense is sub-par, but not if it makes Winn an everyday player.
thing is, Winn would make a terrific 4th OF. he’s a switch hitter, can run and is excellent in the field.

I say we get Jordan "Why'd you trade for McLouth" Schafer from Atlanta along with a pitching prospect Roy Clark likes...

Trading the Hammer to bring in Winn
If the team trades Hammer, it better land the Nats a SP and 2B/SS (depending on the O-Dawg developments). Also, it would be nice if Washington could find a team to take Guzman off their hands in order to land the Hammer.
What team would be most interested in Willingham anyway?
I’m ok with Winn’s offensive ineptitude, but not if Guzman is in the same lineup.
Plenty of teams like Hammer.
Just we want a lot in return. I suspect he’s probably one of most tradable pieces.

At 36.......
What’s the point? Got 4 counting Harris…….Rather use any Winn innings with Maxwell/ Bernadina and find out once and for all whether they’re contenders or just pretenders
