Wire Taps: MLB.com's Bill Ladson - Washington Nationals' Scott Olsen Becomes A Free Agent.
In the last few minutes, MLB.com's Bill Ladson (@washingnats) reported via Twitter that the Washington Nationals, "...secured outright waivers on LHPs Scott Olsen and Jesse English", and Olsen, the 26-year-old left-hander acquired along with OF Josh Willingham in a November 8, 2008 deal with the Florida Marlins, according to Mr. Ladson, "...elected to become a free agent." The Nationals re-signed Olsen to a 1-year/$1 million dollar deal after granting him free agency last December, but the injury-plagued pitcher struggled through another campaign in 2010 and was shut down late in the season with shoulder issues after a move to the bullpen didn't work out.
(6-12) with a 4.63 ERA (72 ERA+) in 28 G, 26 starts over two seasons in D.C., Olsen walked 52 (3.3 BB/9) and struck out 95 (6.7 K/9) in 143.2 IP for the Nationals.
Jesse English, a 26-year-old left-hander selected off waivers from the San Francisco Giants last winter, "has been been outrighted to Triple-A Syracuse," Mr. Ladson reported, but, "he will become a minor-league free agent at 5 pm today." English made seven appearances for the Nats in 2010, but his season ended in July when he had surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow.
• Seven hours after that, at 11:59:59 pm EST, the Nats' big middle-of-the-order bat Adam Dunn will become available league-wide when the Nationals' window to exclusively negotiate with the free agent first baseman ends and Dunn can start talking to other teams along with the entire class of free agents. Any chance Dunn signs in the next twelve hours? Not likely...

Bergmannian, heh...
I liked Olsen but by the end of the year he’d really worn out his welcome. Riggleman looked frustrated talking about him toward the end of the year. When he couldn’t get loose in time to work out of the bullpen he was done.
Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

Actually, I'm a little concerned about this. I have this sinking feeling that Olsen
will end up with another team and be “lights out” for them. That’s the way it goes, though. He seems to have a ’tude" that takes some getting used to.
Patiently waiting for "next year" since 1971.

Not worried about his at all.
I’ll have to check out FJB’s jubilant postmortem for Olsen at some point. He’ll have to find a new axe to grind. Olsen was a not so good character guy from what we saw about the bullpen switch who lost velocity and couldn’t stay healthy. Somebody will dumpster dive on him for a minor league contract at some point.
Not say that I wish him eternal misfortune like I do FLOP, but I won’t exactly be pulling too hard for him either.
The wait for 10/7 begins. This man is focused. Are you?
Not a big surprise
Olsen didn’t do much in his time with the Nationals. He would have one outstanding game and then following up with 4 or 5 mediocre or horrendous starts. The clubhouse will improve without his presence too. Not a big loss.
I doubt he’ll become a Cy Young candidate somewhere else. Even if he does, I don’t think he would have done so here. Time to move on and put together a rotation with different guys.

"Save it. I'm goin' for a smoothie."
The Washington Nationals, the team of the 2010s!
He's a 4/5 starter on a team with a bunch of 4/5 starters with better character and health.

Love it. Put me down as 'me too' on this sentiment
