Washington Nationals Sign Chien-Ming Wang...According to Reports.

If you want to go and buy that Washington Nationals name and number t-shirt with Chien-Ming Wang's surname on the back, MLB.com's Bill Ladson says that you should feel free to go ahead and do so now as Mr. Ladson just made the following announcement via his Twitter feed:

"The #Nats have agreed to terms with right-hander Chien-Ming Wang. The #Nats have not confirmed the agreement."

The 29-year-old former New York Yankees' starter is recovering from shoulder surgery and is not expected to pitch for at least the first two months of the season, but that didn't stop Washington from adding the kind of pitcher DC GM Mike Rizzo, whose fondness for hard-throwing sinker-ballers is well-established, must dream about. The Nationals have been pursuing Wang for several weeks, and after a workout last week in front of the LA Dodgers, who were thought to be the only other team still interested, Washington emerged as the front-runner in the pursuit of the two-time 19-game winner from Tainin, Taiwain. Today they apparently signed the second starter they've been pursuing all winter...

Is The RZO finally done building for the 2010 season?

interested to see the terms

not that it really matters, just interested. if Wang is healthy come June 1, it really helps to settle a still-questionable rotation.

Rizzo’s really trying to build the league’s worst K/9 rotation though.

In the future,

Why can’t Zimm play Shortstop and we can get a decent 3B?

by RoscoeNats on Feb 16, 2010 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

i asked that question last season, with some fraudulent science to back it up

and was resoundly scoffed at.

I didn't scoff. I've been wondering that for a long time.

Imagine that offensive production from a freaking middle infielder.

That just makes the problem an endless search for a 3B...

Zim has more than enough range and arm strength to play short

and it’s MUCH easier to find a serviceable 3B than short.

I agree with Dave. Much easier to find a 3B who can hit and field ok.

I feel like Zimm is being wasted at 3B though he saves lots of doubles since our LF sucks.

I guess I'm just reminded of the Cubs' search for a 3B...

Patience

The 2010 Nationals will not be perfect. We all know that. But they will be far better than the 2008 and 2009 editions. Yeah, they still have some hole on the field (I am not sure about the outfield and I am lot more concern by Guzan at shortstop than by Dunn at first). They are not perfect, but they are, by far, better than last year. So, why are we complaining ? Why are we reading all of these negative comments ?

Look at their improvement on the mount. They now have major league pitchers and good young guns waiting in the corral. M. Rizzo is working very well, with the support of a bunch of high quality advisors. But Paris was not building in one day. They will win at least 75 games this season.

I am not a naive optimistic person, but I am realistic enough to see that the Nats are climbing the Jacob’s ladder.

This is long, drawn out, and maybe better as a fanpost (And certainly not directed to your comment), but

Do you seriously expect this team to go from 100 losses to 100 wins in a single season? Is it possible, yeah, sure, anything is. But would you rather get a string of free agents every year (examples Boston, New York Yankees, Mets) or would you rather have a consistently improving system that self promotes from within while picking up free agents whenever blatantly needed(examples St. Louis, Atlanta, Philadelphia). I don’t know as much about baseball as I do about hockey, but I watched the entire Capitals rebuild, starting in 1999. Once the team had a commitment to a solid franchise strategy to build it, rather than just throw money at players, there were several lean years with empty stadiums. Then the Caps had year after year of successful draft. All of a sudden, three major signings. Then three major trades on the deadline, and wham, playoff team and a division championship.

It’ll be harder for the Nationals, since the NL East is so much stronger than the Southeast, and there’s only two available playoff spots compared to six potential spots in hockey, but I’d rather a team, built, with players I recognize as home-grown prospects over a free agent mash up. I realize in baseball, free agents need to be signed, but I really don’t see, other than Hudson, a player who Rizzo could have acquired over someone the Nationals have actually signed who would have been a major improvement at a reasonable cost.

The moves that have been made this offseason tell me one thing – this rebuilding team is wanting to be more than just a last place doormat. Are they the right moves? Eh, maybe, maybe not. But it beats the piss out of just throwing money and long term deals at players who probably don’t deserve it. Capps is an upgrade. Kennedy is an upgrade. Marquis, Strasburg(later), Wang(later), Bruney are all upgrades.

Short term deals for above average players is a good strategy. Hopefully, with pick ups from draft and minor league signings, you see those guys slowly phased out and replaced by the up and comers, or eventually replaced by a better signing.

Again, I don’t know about baseball, but this model works in other sports, and has worked in this town. I may be setting myself up for years of disappointment, but I’m excited for a change instead of just thinking “By the all star break, I’ll be waiting for Hockey season while watching the Cards.”

Oh, I'm all for building from within....that's why I'd like to see Desmond play instead of Kennedy. I have an investment in Ian.

These “upgrades” will be my team in a few weeks. I’ll have emotional and visceral reactions, good and bad, as they play out their roles before us….I’ll miss the guys they displace.

But, I think most teams’ fans are apprehensive to change and question a FO’s moves…That may come off as negative, but I’d rather appear to run around with my hair on fire at times, than be all Pollyanna too much…….

I’m fine with questioning, it just seems like every move is branded as a mistake. I’m relatively new to baseball, and maybe I just don’t know enough, but I don’t have a problem with making Desmond earn a spot through Kennedy, or through Guzman. Depth on your infield rarely seems a bad thing, and Kennedy was a favorite of mine while he was with St. Louis.

An added value to this deal is putting the Smoltz concept in a shallow hole in the backyard and scratching dirt over it....

Strikeout guys throw too many pitches. Conserve the pitch count, stay in longer, less use of the bullpen, fewer injuries…it’s the next New Wave!!!…..unless Nolan Ryan has the Rangers winning doing just the opposite…

The Nats have no use for Smoltz? Isn’t this team trying to emulate the Braves of the ‘90s? Smoltz could mentor that young staff as good as anyone. I don’t like your off season moves (I don’t like those of the Braves’ either).

Here are Pujols's stats: 1.000/1.000/4.000/5.000. That's right. He is batting a thousand, with a thousand OBP (naturally), and every hit has been a home run, and thus his OPS is a perfect 5.000.

Thanks for sharing your view

Maybe the team should rest on its laurels with a 100 loss season… or grab the 42 year old pitcher that is one pitch away from ending his career.

How would the Nats emulate the braves of the 90s by signing an overpriced, over-hyped veteran who is close to being washed up? Youth anyone?

All depends who's in the rotation by the time he returns...

It’s wide open after Lannan and Marquis…by then could be Strasburg, Wang, Lannan, Marquis and Olsen or Detwiler…whether or not they can compete with the NL East elite, the Nationals should be more fun to watch this season…
